How Russia's nuclear threats could make Xi turn on Putin | William Courtney

"Putin earlier talked about nuclear threats, but then after he met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Samarkand, Uzbekistan and with India's Narendra Modi ... since then, we have seen Russia stop talking about nuclear threats."
Putin has been forced to back down on nuclear threats while Ukraine is waiting for the ground to freeze to restart their offensive, William Courtney Former Special Assistant to the President on Russia tells #TimesRadio

Putin could declare war on Ukraine (abandoning the limited special military operation narrative), declare a full Russian mobilisation, martial law and war economy throughout Russia, and then throw every reservist, rifle, artillery piece, tank and plane in the Russian Federation into the fight. Everything short of nuclear weapons.

LITTLE-KNOWN FACTS ABOUT PUTIN. Nothing personal, just facts. I was pretty tired of this war and decided to sort it out... In 2013, before a coup d'etat took place in Ukraine, Putin asked the then President of Ukraine, Yanukovych, not to use force against protesters.. In 2014, when the Ukrainian army was encircled in the Donbas, Putin called on the separatists to release the AFU soldiers from the "cauldron" and exchange prisoners. In 2014, realizing that the conflict could escalate into a fratricidal war, Putin proposed a plan to resolve the crisis in Ukraine "Minsk 1". The peace initiatives assumed the cessation of offensives by all armed formations in the Donbas, the withdrawal of all troops to a safe distance from populated areas, international control over the observance of the ceasefire, the refusal of Ukraine to use military aviation against civilians, the exchange of prisoners under the "all for all" scheme, as well as the opening of humanitarian corridors. In 2015, Putin actively supported the German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier who proposed a special procedure for the entry into force of the law on the special status of Donbass, provided for by the Minsk agreements. In 2015, in order to resolve the crisis in Ukraine as soon as possible, Putin proposed to sign the Minsk 2 supplementary agreement, where the obligations of the parties to the conflict were spelled out in more detail. In 2017, Putin proposed to deploy a UN mission on the contact line in the Donbas to ensure the safety of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission staff. Later, Putin did not rule out that such a mission could be located throughout the conflict, but with the consent of the proclaimed republics of Donbass. (!!!) On December 15, 2021, Putin warns NATO against unleashing a war and offers to discuss with the United States the draft treaty on security guarantees and an agreement on measures to ensure the security of Russia and NATO countries. But his initiative is ignored. At the beginning of 2022, Ukraine is concentrating 170 thousand troops on the border of Donbass, and in mid-February begins artillery preparation for the offensive. Putin understands that it will not be possible to avoid war, decides to counterattack. At the same time, Putin forbids the military to shoot at civilian objects and, if possible, at industrial infrastructure, which greatly hinders the progress of the military. It is obvious that Putin had no plans to seize Ukraine. If he wanted to, he could have done it in 2014, when there was a favorable environment. This is confirmed by all military analysts and in particular Angela Merkel: «The Minsk agreements of 2014 were an attempt to give Ukraine time. They used this time to become stronger. As we could observe during the fighting in the Debaltseve area in 2015, Russia could have easily won then. And I very much doubt that NATO countries could have done as much then as they are doing now to help Ukraine». All the world's media deliberately mislead us by inventing sophisticated stories about bad Russians and heroic deeds of Ukrainians…But not a single fact about Russia's alleged atrocities against civilians has been proven. By the way, the tragedy in the city of Bucha is a dramatization of the special services of Ukraine before the visit of high-ranking officials from the EU. When the world finds out the truth, it will be too late. Look at what is happening with your country's economy... And this is just the beginning of a great catastrophe. Understand, Putin will not stop. During the 22 years of his rule, Putin has not made a single geopolitical mistake, and the Russian economy, as noted by leading world analysts, has achieved outstanding results, even despite unprecedented sanctions. P.S.It is obvious that Putin did everything possible to avoid this war...But who really needed an escalation. Guess who?

There WAS no other candidate for MOY than Zelensky, that has been obvious since Feb 24th when he told the USA-'I don't need a ride, I need weapons!' And he has only grown more impressive, VERY Churchillian. It definitely will improve morale for the Ukrainians and the military and is also a sock in the eye for Putin who may be able to win Villain of the Year! One reason for the morale boost is on Feb 24th, most of the world couldn't point out Ukraine on a map if their life depended on it and certainly couldn't tell you anything about it, now the Penguins in the South Pole probably know his name and all about Ukraine which will only help them when they rebuild and give a giant boost to the tourism industry. With the creativeness of those people, we will see plenty of Putins War tours and other things. Their ingenuity and creativity has probably what has impressed me the most!l Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦!!!!!

Look at the staunch patriotism and unflinching wartime support King George VI/Queen Elizabeth showed the people during WW2 by remaining in London even while their own home was bombed. The positive effect of the Royal visits to the areas worst hit must have been such a boost - naturally enough to those whose neighbourhoods which got called upon particularly - but with the effusive Press generated, the overall effect Nationally must have been incalculable. The comparison between Their Majesties and President Zelenskyy barely needs to be made - whereas the contrast with Putin, lurking like a sinister, mutant spider in a silky lair, is equally obvious. I sincerely hope a supposedly respectable journalist like Roger Boyes ceases and desists in leaving the door open to the possibility of "peace talks", "compromise" and "settlements" as even vague possibilities and giving fuel and oxygen to the dastardly machinations of Macron and Scholz - imagine if he had been alive and reporting thus in Le Figaro in 1941? What do you think British reaction to that would have been while The Times featured The King and Queen stood amongst the smouldering ruins of the East End?

I think you might be able to take Putin's stating that Russia hasn't gone mad as a positive sign. That sounds like he might have decided it's counterproductive to use the nuclear fears of the world as a "pressure point" in his diplomatic grappling game. This is a bit harsh on the Russian people, themselves, but I'd say that it's another indication that the best contribution the West can make to the ending of this (at whatever lines both fighting parties sensibly restrict themselves to) is to at least privately offer Putin protection from his "friends" in the case of failure. (i.e. don't make this about more than it needs to be - so don't transform the objective into that of getting rid of Putin, instead of just getting rid of the Russian invasion). You'd need to do that in private for various reasons (and then at least tell officials and official-connected people that they're out of line when they push beyond the goal of helping Ukraine as much as possible with the business of survival). If Putin felt safe with the consequences of accepting that the 3 day campaign didn't go according to plan, and can't now be rescued by sacrificing Russia's youth, maybe he'd be willing to accept those consequences. Maybe not, but if he's saying he's not mad, I would guess that he is indeed not mad. Now all he needs to do is hurry up with losing the war (maybe make his least friendly friends to blame for this, and deal with them ... again that's going way out of scope.)

On launching a nuclear first strike The US has long had a doctrine of a “disarming” attack against command and control systems, for which they developed cruise missiles the Soviet Union lacked, Putin said. Now Russia has hypersonic missiles that are “more modern and even more effective,” so “perhaps we should think about adopting the developments and ideas of our American partners when it comes to ensuring security.” While the US doctrine envisions a pre-emptive nuclear strike, Russia’s doctrine is about retaliation, Putin explained. If the Russian early warning system detects a missile attack, “hundreds of our missiles will fly and it will be impossible to stop them.” While some attacking missiles will strike Russia, “nothing will remain of the enemy,” and that is how nuclear deterrence works, he explained.

The conventional idea that all conflicts end with diplomacy is patently wrong, and examples abound. WWII is the quintessential example. On the other end, the defeat of the Tamil insurgency in Sri Lanka, ended with all the rebels being jammed into an area the size of a football pitch and killed. Then there are the many times where diplomacy was tried, and one side just ignored it. For the US, Vietnam and Afghanistan are good examples.

Putin should realise that the old saying about fences making good neighbours makes absolute sense. If Europeans stop considering their own selfish maneuverings, and the retired British generals set aside their intrusion in Practical politics this war can finish very quickly with the reinstatement of international rule that you don't attack and annex your neighboring country as they did in some bygone age. That surely must be something everyone except Russia can agree on. Sanctions, in this case, shouldn't be considered as only a weapon and constantly measuring its effect in anticipating the downfall of the Russian economy but as commonsense that you don't help the enemy because any kind of relief contributes to strengthening its army. So, at least as long as the armed conflict carries on the economic sanctions are part and parcel of the war. I do wish media punters would stop going on about the potential of nuclear war. In the worst-case scenario, there is nothing that can be done about it except to satisfy Putin's blackmail or even compromise over it. So, let's leave it to destiny. Que sera sera. I mean, after all, there is an equally devastating danger on the horizon that is called climate change that according to simulations is going to become irreversible in this decade if it isn't already, and by the middle of next decade, there might as well have been a nuclear war on this planet where only the few will survive.

Their answer is always the same received wisdom: the West must give Ukraine everything it needs to fight as long as it wants. _How_ Ukraine could end the war is never explained. Even if Ukraine reconquers all of its territory, what makes anyone think Russia will stop its attacks. A war isn't over until the winner says so and therefore Ukraine cannot be victor because it has no way to end this war.
