How Rudeus Developed - Anime Only Mushoku Tensei Character Analysis

Фильм және анимация

#MushokuTensei #JoblessReincarnation #anime
Rudeus Greyrat saw a lot of character development on the way to Mushoku Tensei episode 23, and this video is an in-depth breakdown of how Rudy grew and changed throughout his first 13 years in the Mushoku Tensei world. Including his experiences with Roxy, Sylphy, Eris, Ruijerd, Paul, Zenith and the rest of the cast, as well as the major changes he went through in terms of skills, powers, abilities and magic, this is a full analysis and explanation of Rudeus' character through the first 23 episodes of the series. There are no spoilers for later in the light novel series, so I hope you find this an interesting look back at Rudeus throughout season 1 while we wait for the season 2 announcement and release date!

    I hate to say it, but Rudeus' past self is basically a worst version of myself. Not as bad, but too close for comfort lol. The degeneracy, the shut in mentality (although I do leave the house to go shopping or to eat, I spend way to much time sitting in my room on the computer), the feeling of loneliness with no friends, the feeling that you are wasting away your life and there is no hope for a happy future, the self-loathing for it all... hell even the age. He's only six years older than me. I haven't hit rock bottom but I'm dangerously close. I'd at least have the willpower to go to my own parent's funeral. But that is why this anime feels so amazing to me. That I can still change. I am trying, but trying is hard... It's so easy to give up, and so easy to believe that efforts to improve will amount to nothing. Even when feeling that you gotta do it or the hopeless future you see for yourself is only guaranteed. Bet is that small sliver of hope, or else nothing will be done. This just kinda ended up being a little pep talk for myself lol. But as I said, Identify with old fat shut in Rudeus a little more than I wish to, so seeing his development gives me just a little more feeling of hope lol.

    That one line from the interview won't leave my head. If there's someone like Rudy in your life that's showing signs to try and change I hope you won't abandon them. When the anime first aired alongside people hating on Rudy for being an "iredeemable pedo" and what not there were some comments along the lines of "the main character doesn't need to be a morally well behaved person. Of course I wouldn't be friends with someone like him IRL, but it's just a story".. in and of itself that is perfectly fine, but the signs of change and development were there from episode 1 and I wonder how many people would really have noticed and be willing to reach out a hand to him. Instead of judging him, teach him.. What's so realistic about his development is that it's not just forward and quick like fictional heros develop. It's slow.. sometimes it's even backwards. Two of my favorite quotes of Rudy in S1 were "People change" and now "People don't change that easily". Both are very true. We do change. Slowly over time. We learn new things and try to apply them. But our old behaviors, thoughts and feelings don't just vanish over night. They are the foundation in which we take in new experiences after all. A good example for this is actually in language acquisition. A child learns the meaning of a word by hearing and seeing it in a lot of different contexts. It will then come to a conclusion of it's meanings and how it is used based on the patterns it recognizes. Now say this child picked up a word and it's use the wrong way. Simply telling the child what the correct use is will not lead to the child from now on using the word the right way. However if the child experiences more and more instances of the right usage of the word they will eventually outweight the mistaken experiences and it won't make the same mistake again.. How we develop as a person is much the same. And Rudy reflects this kind of development very well. People don't change easily, but they do change. Honestly that last scene of the anime was beautifully amazing. Not only the visual contrast, but also "Rudy's" voice talking while his old self is leaving the house.. in this scene in his head be doesn't have his "old voice" but his "new voice", reflecting in this instant at least that he has finally arrived in this new world.

    "iredeemable pedo" - Yes, people who don't even know what that means/the definition. Filled with hate and prejudice. Unable to see what is actually presented on screen and understand the character at all, because of that. Ironically the type of people who push others down negative paths. Similar behavior to a religious fanatic. You know, if i have to travel and adventure with someone in that world, Rudeus would be a great choice. Someone i could definitely reason with when issues occur and someone i know isn't going to judge me hard for every little thing or potential mistake. (unlike those people who think they are perfect beings when they are actually pretty terrible)

    My favorite part of the end was when he finally decided to move out and forward is not the fat slob's voice the one we heard, but the one of Rudy, showing how his new personality is slowly, and literally, walking forward.

    I think it's kind of silly that people overlook the insane amount of personal growth Rudeus went through just because he remained perverted. Think about it. Over the span of this first season, he: Learned to reexamine biases and discrimination by reaching a hand out to Ruijerd and saving him at a low point in his life. Learned to value his life and be more careful because one wrong move could result in his death, thanks to the kidnapping incident. Learned to value the lives of others instead of purely seeking personal gain, as shown when his desire for a "perfect" scenario got a Demon Race youth killed. Learned to actually be more honest with his comrades instead of keeping things for them, thus relearning how to create healthy relationships. Realized through Paul's separation of him and Sylphy that he was effectively grooming her into an overly dependent girl who would never be able to grow on her own if he stayed with her. Overcame his trauma of going outside and making connections, as well as fear of failure. Experienced his first genuine heartbreak because again, this dude effectively stopped progressing mentally and emotionally at the age of 14. He was a manchild. Reflects on how he pushed away people who cared about him and loved him in his past life - his siblings, his parents, his friends, all tried to support him for 20 years before they completely gave up. If Rudeus was a full blown pervert, he would not have been affected by Eris leaving him. If all he cared about was the sexual aspect, he would have just thought "well whatever haha guess I'll go find a prostitute to screw! Hey, Sylphy's still alive, let's go find her and rebound!" But he didn't. What snapped him out of his depression after Eris left wasn't the possibility of getting to do the sexy time again. It was finding his mother. His mother, Zenith, who loves him and showered him with affection for the first 6 years of his life. He doesn't want to make the same mistake of losing his parents without showing them how much he cares for them in return.

    The problem is that this is not how writing work. Writing workntrought setups and payoffs. If rl rudeus was kicked out of his house because he was an apologist to Imperial Japan, then the Rujerd stuff would have been a relevant element of growth but he wasn't kicked out for that reason. If i make a character was fatal flaw is supposed to be envy, and then i havd him grow past his greed and gluttony, but not his envy, writer would have a right to call me out on the fact that i am tiptoeing around the real issue. The thing that made me drop Mashoku was realizing that the author set up lust as Rudeus fatal flaw and then decided to never truly adress it or punish him for it because he gave more importance to ecchi than to write a good story. The core problem is the reason Rudy was kicked out, if it was for literally any other reason, his character wouldn't be hurt nearly as much by being a pervert

  • @ApexGale

    @ApexGale

    @@noukan42 your issue is your idea of what a story's structure should be is painfully narrow. some characters don't fix their flaws completely. that's not bad writing. just because mushoku's structure isn't formulaic doesn't make it bad. like, i also get tired of him being perverted. that's not gonna stop me from enjoying his growth as a character. do you not have friends that have annoying sides to them? but you stick with them anyway and continue to treat them well because you enjoy their presence when they aren't showing you that annoying side

    @@ApexGale they don't fix all their flaw, but they are supposed to fix the one flaw the author put at the center of the narrative, or fail and face the consequemce. That is the basic of "fatal flaw" narrative. • @ApexGale

    @ApexGale

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@noukan42 but Rudeus's lust...isn't his fatal flaw? it's a byproduct of his biggest flaw - which is his rejection of people who cared about him. You kind of missed the entire point of the story if you think Rudeus being perverted was what he was trying to overcome. The entire story is about him slowly losing his manchild mindset and growing to care for the people that he is blessed to have in his life. He recontextualizes his past life and realizes he was a shitty person, pushing away people who wanted to help him. The story's subtitle isn't "If I'm reincarnated, I'll stop being horny." It's "If I'm reincarnated, I'll try seriously." He is learning to take his second chance more seriously. Never settling or stagnating, but actively trying to improve. Would past Rudeus have left his home? Would he have learned how to properly teach Eris and Ghislaine? Would he have taken care of Eris on the Demon Continent? Would he have set aside the prejudice of the Superd that his mother and teacher taught him to befriend Ruijerd? Would he have been so upset over his father getting angry with him? Would he have actually reflected on his missteps? The answer is no - he would have stayed stagnant, refusing to care for people and staying trapped in his own mindset of self pity. He would have thought "Nah, I've done enough. I can afford to be complacent, I'm a genius mage." But he doesn't. Complacency is the one thing Rudeus avoids like the plague. He is terrified of reverting to the same shitty person he used to be by being lazy. He snaps himself out of his funk after Eris leaves by reminding himself that his mother is still missing and he needs to find her. Old Rudeus would have never recovered - the experience was just as traumatizing. But he persists here anyway. Overlooking all of the good aspects of the show just because there's one consistent trait that never fully improves is harsh, but it's your loss.

    Rudeus as a character grows because of who he was. He is truly flawed to the point there are many parts of him to fix. To be serious in living, to learn acceptable social norms, to learn about harsh reality and not be warped by it. So many lessons, some easy, some intense. It all led to Rudeus being a person who moves in spite of himself. Even if it is a little nudge from his mother of this world. There will be more lessons, harsher reality he will go through, to be someone who can be satisfied with his life the day his life ends.

    first thanks as awlays making ya video its nice to watch also the topic of his growth is trully for me the author did a realistic and well crafted route as they say "one dont just be good over night" human nature takes long time before it can changed its facts even hows smart we are there some factors of who we are cant just drop in the hate i know this is abit dark but that why addiction to mixtures takes a long battle to end its not something one can drop at times i feel some are inpatient to wait to see better version nor understand that if we are put in his shoes will we be any better? and the fact that he has baggies he has to solve and those are not the type one can just forget or fix you said all that needs to be said :) those are important key points for his growth i do looking forward for second season waht it be like that is yet to be seen XD also i am excited ya next videos

    Rudeus definitely does get better with his perverse behavior later on, but (as far as volume 14 in the LN) I don't think he'll ever escape his perverted thoughts. He's still a man. Ain't nothing wrong with that. He makes great strides in almost every aspect of his character development, but prudes focus on just the sexual aspect. 🤦🏻

    Also, in the story, almost every other characters are more sexual deviants than Rudeus. As a child , he is way more pervert than every other kids. But as an adult in MT, every other characters beside devoted Milis believer like Zenith and Cliff, or “ too old for this shit” like Ruijerd; they all feel really messed up sexually. And Technically, Roxy is a home wrecker that take advantage of a man when he is down. Just saying... 🤣

    I cried so many times throughout this series, it's so well written and it really feels like every character is truly alive and has their own personality and their own view on the world. You could take almost any character in this series and if you were to see their life unfold it would feel like another anime in and of itself.

    Great video about Rudy. What i really like about MT in general is compared to other isekai the characters are not just "there for the MC" per se but have own thoughts, growths etc. Rudy himself learns from his past and tries to improve where he can over and over again which is a nice change if one only knows newer isekai shows who are kinda "bleak". Spoiler. . . . . . . Going on by what i read till vol 14 (still in the middle of it during demon continent return) we see Rudy change a lot. For example in vol 7 when he just shoutet at Soldat and told all his bottled up feelings or later on when he gets married and has a family to look after. We see how he has changed (even though he gets a bit more pervy i guess since his wive allow it XD", also Syphie best wife imo) Or other changes like he could understand Paul better after being a father himself, trying to improve himself in magic research and getting stronger to protect his family and so on. I think that the characters in MT are so "human" makes it at least for me a lot more enjoyable and relateable compared to the op/power isekai shows lately. I want a time machine for faster light novel releases D: btw when i finish vol14 where do i continue in the web novel? im kinda temptet to continue there but at the same time not ._."

    To say that Rudeus hasn't changed in the season isn't all that crazy, but I think it just goes to show how well written he is. His changes can be shown, but deep down he's still the same guy. There are the symbolisms of sex depicting maturity, where he was a depraved manic the first time with Eris, and then he was an understanding and hesitant the second time around. In the end tho, he still lost to his lust both times. I feel like the reason some people may think he hasn't changed is bc he's written that way. Rudeus is the prime example that truly changing yourself is a very hard task. He wants to be better, but being "better is extremely difficult especially when you were mentally stunted at the age of 16 or so. The story encapsulates how grueling the task of changing yourself really is. At multiple points Rudy feels completely inadequate bc of his mentality. Spoiler for the WN That's why Rudy never changed from his past life's body whenever he was with Hitogami. He himself never saw himself worthy of change. Until you get to the very end where you realize he has changed to his new body. Where he finally sees himself as a changed man, a man who did something with his life. It was truly a beautiful metaphor that Rifujin used to depict that

    almost a year late to this video, but oh well. I loved what you had to say in this. Every time I revisit this series by doing another rewatch or reading the LNs (currently on vol 17), I discover another aspect to Rudeus, his growth, and the way his development is framed by the writing. One aspect that I have seen other people mention that also bothered me is that despite the writing being clear that the way Rudeus, as a child, treats women is wrong, there isn't a lot of backlash against him. Eris might beat him up or Roxy might scold him, but there are never any real punishments for his behavior. For a long time I felt that this was counter to the message. But I recently realized that it actually outlines Rudeus' growth even more. It's obvious why we, as the viewers, want Rudeus to change his behavior, but why should HE want to change. Because he is afraid of getting punished? I don't think so. I want him to change because he, himself, realizes that his behavior is wrong. That he shouldn't hurt people even if he can get away with it. I also think that this is why it's important that a lot of the men in his life are, frankly, really awful with women. Paul, Sauros, Philip, Pax, Luke, Darius, etc are examples of men who can and do get away with treating the women in their life poorly. And most of the rest may not do the same, but they also don't really intervene either. That's just not the way this world works. Rudeus could easily have not grown at all, and instead found his own ways to exploit his power to enact his worst fantasies without punishment. But he didn't. I think all of those men I listed would have groped Eris (or rather a woman who matched their taste) on the boat without a second thought and without regret. This series not only shows growth for an extremely complicated character, but it also shows that real growth is internal. I think that's huge. Spoiler for later LNs We even see that Rudeus can undo all of this growth when we read his future diary. Growth is not just internal, it's also not a one way street. Once you reach a new tier in the growth leaderboard, you can still go back down if you don't consistently try to keep improving yourself.

    Thank you for making this vedio, I did not fully understand because of my high expectations. Having heard that rudy changes to be a much greater person, had initially left my with the idea that rudy would grow and learn to be a "gentlemen like person". But now that you put it this way, yes rudy has grown considerably. It was never expected for him to change instantly, but learn to see and respect people's privacy thoughts do count and it is something rudeus does not try to be better at. He is trying his best to not let everything in life pass him by and he has grow and became a much better person compared to his old self. It would be better if he is not be advertised as from shutin to "gentleman like". I can't cheer for him really, but I can accept him as he is and not expect more than he is up to. I do like this story very much and will continue to read. but I don't think it's right to say he is or would become a great person.

    tBh the sexual maturity thing is something nearly every guy has had to deal with since male biology is just wired for it so i think mushoku tensei resonates w/ guys really well on this level REGARDLESS of the individual. It's only a relatively small proportion of men, maybe like 20% who knows, that ever mature SIGNIFICANTLY beyond that level of sexual starvation. For a variety of reasons ofc, but i think girls would honestly be surprised by how commonplace this is. Rudeus is just like a mildly extreme example tbh!

    I wonder... if that hate for Rudy comes from episode 1 where he didn't go to his parents funeral and his own family members throw him out on the streets. Westerners may or may not understand it's true significance but it is an EXTREMELY vile action and one of the worst things you could do to your family. The belief is if you don't attend your parent's funeral then their spirits will never be at rest because they are looking for their child. Even this action took me quite a while until I could see Rudy without that bias. So it wouldn't be too much a stretch to say for some Rudy's starting path to redemption with his former self didn't start until the end of season 1, where he gets out of bed to look for Zenith.

  • @NatalieXHunter

    @NatalieXHunter

    2 жыл бұрын

    His family members throw him out because of *what he was looking at* instead of going to the funeral (this is fully explained in one of the Redundancy stories), not just for not going. For an agoraphobic not to go to a funeral might be considered forgivable, and I'm not sure most people have a superstition around their parents spirits not being able to rest (I nearly didn't make it to my mother's funeral, because it was in a different country to where I lived - I did manage to get there but I don't think anyone would have thought it shocking or vile if I couldn't... if it had been during the pandemic, a lot of people who live far away from their parents would have been legally unable to travel to their funerals, and this kind of superstition would only make them feel worse).

    @NatalieXHunter - The parent's furneral thing is an asian thing and born from the belief of spirits, not that I'd ever miss it. And also my reason for that line of thought is because this same situation happened to someone I know (by name only) and suffice to say it wasn't pretty.

  • @NatalieXHunter

    @NatalieXHunter

    Ah, I see. I don't think it is a common belief in the west, though, though it would be seen as very strange not to go to your parents' funeral if you had no extreme practical reason not to go, so I don't think that is the source of the hate for him we see from a lot of Western fans (most of the negative stuff I've seen about him in English has been from Americans). Knowing it's a belief in some Asian cultures though does add to why Rifujin might have wanted to include it as something Rudeus did at his lowest point in terms of shameful behavior.

  • @ezg8448

    @ezg8448

    2 жыл бұрын

    @NatalieXHunter - To add a little more context everytime we go pay out respects to the deceased we would talk to them as if they were living, I know every culture does this but it's much more common to asians is all. To apply it to your situation with almost missing your funeral, you would get a pass because of covid and not being physically possible to see them. People would literally explain to the deceased why you couldn't make it, but of course you would be expected to go as soon as physically possible afterwards.

  • @NatalieXHunter

    @NatalieXHunter

    2 жыл бұрын

    It wasn't during COVID, I was just saying COVID would have been a reason for a lot of people. In my case it was just logistics that made it difficult because I lived in a different country. I missed my grandmother's funeral due to COVID, as did my dad (whose mother she was - we could attend by livestream...). Still, you can imagine a lot of situations like that that could occur with many people these days moving far away from their families (like, if someone's family were in the UK, and they had emigrated to Australia, say, that is a long and expensive journey, and one you may not be able to make if it is unexpected, and of course, your family might understand given your parent is dead anyway so it's not like you being physically present makes any practical difference).

    Agreed on a lot of points you made about Rudeus' development, and while, his sexual deviancy is something we would be pretty harsh on him to truly drive home the point of self-restraint on his deviancy. His impact on the world are mostly positive in spite of his flaws and that leave us curious to see where he'll go from here. He is adopting something that he lacked in his previous life, empathy, or caring about how other feels and that is probably the biggest change that allows him to practice some level of self-restraints to begin with. After Eris leaving him, he felt depressed and was particularly short sighted that he didn't try to think about what other possible reasons Eris might've left him which shows that he still have a way to go to be more empathetic that would've enabled him to see beyond what was said or written. I guess that would be the biggest thing I hope to see more of in second season in Mushoku Tensei.

  • @FrostFireTiger

    I'm wandering which points in the story the second season will reach. SPOILERS... If the second season is broken into two parts like the first one, then I'm guessing that the first five or six episodes will be the Adventures of Quagmire ending in the meeting with Elinalize. Then the first part ending with the meeting of Fitz in the cave. The second part will likely end at Turning Point 3. Though I'm not sure if I'm spacing it out accordingly.

    Rudeus is a prime example of why the worst sin possible in Christianity is despair. He lost all hope and gave up on everything, even (especially) himself. The really impressive thing is that he actually recognized where he went wrong. Not in refusing to attend his parents' funeral, not in developing all kinds of perversions and living as a shut-in, but in losing hope and giving up. That is the single moment that was the seed of all his other vices and failings, and thus that is the spot he has to fix if he's going to make his new life better than his old one. I don't imagine Rudeus will ever truly lose all signs of the degenerate he once was, but still, he'll surely develop into somebody who can channel his, er, eccentric desires into things that actually help him move forward in his new life. And I do think he will indulge his desires in a way that is respectful or even (given his attitude toward Roxy) worshipful, rather than abusive and creepy. Possibly still creepy if you want to kink-shame him, but not abusive.

    It's nice to know I'm not the only person cringe enough to use Linkin Park lyrics while talking.
