How rising prices on food, rent and household items are affecting Americans

According to the Labor Department, inflation hit a fresh 40-year record last month with consumer prices increasing 9.1% over the last 12 months. CBS News correspondent Nancy Chen reports on how rising prices are affecting people across the country. Then, Joe Brusuelas, principal and chief economist for RSM, joins CBS News' John Dickerson to discuss the latest numbers.

My stress level is so high. This is my fear that my landlord in my San Francisco studio will do this to us. I gave up my car, I got a roommate what more do they want us to do. I'm 36 and pay all my bills on time and yet the bank's won't sell me a home but it's ok for me to pay $3,200 for a studio. The government is letting this happen on purpose. Were too smart as a society for this to not have been planned.😭

Many people are being priced out of any housing. Meanwhile living in SF is a luxury, if you're no longer in the top 0.1% that can afford it, there's no shame in moving. You could live much more comfortably somewhere else. I visit SF as a tourist once a year, and I can't believe what they'll charge for a bag of chips. I don't know how anyone survives there.

My property taxes are $6,000 per year, house insurance $125 per month, just paid $1000 on a/c repairs, $85 for the quarterly pest control, $250 on recent lawn mower repairs, $1,348 mortgage. Tons of surprise costs and repairs every year, not including any updates or changes to our home. We go to Lowes monthly buying something to care for the house or lawn. The cost of living crisis appears to be a global problem, although here in the US it has been made worse by the increase in the prices of many goods. I believe that the government can bring into play a policy that helps reduces inflation, but for some reason, I don't think they are concerned about how the common person would do in these strangely challenging times.

Inflation hits people a lot harder than a crashing stock or housing market as it directly affects people's cost of living that people immediately feel the impact of. It's not surprising negative market sentiment is so high now. We really need help to survive in this Economy. The fin-Market;s have underperformed the U.S. economy as fear of inflation hammers the prices of stock;s and bonds. . It might sound basic or generic, but getting in touch with a financial adviser was how I was able to outperform the market and raise a profit of $850,000 since June 2022. For me, its the most ideal way to jump into the fin-market these day.

We must eat organic and GMO free foods as well as grass fed meats. We buy our groceries and cook from scratch all of our meals at home - we never eat out. Our groceries have gone up $50-60 per week which translate to $200.00 or more every month. Add to that the increases in vehicle gas and other increases and it's getting very, very tough. After a 32-year career in servicing phones and IT, my husband still works three days per week mixing paint and selling products at a big box store in order to make ends meet. I take care of all of our condo management (constant e-mail that need response and addressing.) I took care of finding the repair servicemen and having a new water heater installed and then 6 months later a new furnace installed and overall general management of our lifestyle. When my 2012 vehicle died in June, I found a repair garage, I located a vehicle to rent and managed the entire engine rebuild and then pick up. When we recently had a waterline leak on our condo - I have managed this entire process from day one in February, 2022. I have dealt with insurance agents, contractors, fridge repair men, painters, trim guys, flooring, kitchen rebuild and project management of the entire 6-month repair process. I am up every day out of 7 at 4 a.m. and walk our dog and do her daily training and then come home and start cooking before he leaves for work at 7:15 a.m. My husband works three days a week and does nothing else - he does not respond to his own e-mail's, he does not even open his own mail. He just does not care about any of the practical day-to-day things that keep our heads above water. I keep our life running smoothly and make sure everything gets done and done in a timely manner. I do not get paid for my work, but I work plenty. I have been doing this now for the past 27 years. Least you think I am taking advantage of him when we met, I took him into my mortgage free home, and paying off his debts when we got married and he owned nothing and had nothing but $20,000 worth of debts (not even a vehicle.) I helped him set up a budget, I bought him a vehicle, I supported him 100% for two years so he could funnel his entire salary into paying of his previous debts and got us back on the road to solvency so we could begin a new life together. I put his name on my mortgage free home, paid for my car as well as my saving and financial assets so we could be equal partners. He has not been taken advantage of.

Given the high inflation which has led to a reduction in the purchasing power of the consumer, CPGs are looking for new ways to attract customers. I think the arrival of digital coupons and the move to 8112 has been accelerated by this. Fobi is able to increase customer loyalty by issuing digital coupons through Qples, and more! This would be very useful to big brands, not only to increase their ROi, but give them the ability to attract customers based on real-time promotions! McDonalds, Burger King and many other brands could use Qples by fobi coupons to boost customer loyalty, ROI and improve their margins, while offering a unique experience to consumers.

Housing costs are one issue. A bigger, deeper issue is the reduced access to opportunity being a renter of personal housing and the lack of oversight on the restrictions put on landlords/rental agreements by legislators and or government. I believe being a renter creates circumstances where one looses access to opportunities that other non renters may have. In rental agreements they curb one from starting a business, or working on their own vehicle even if good discretion is used. Being a renter forces one to become a greater consumer and user of services. They pay way too much for the actual return. Really, it mainly a roof overhead with utility hookups that the renter will never own and a form of usury is put upon the renter. I believe multi family dwellings need to be better categorized according to size, amenities and total number of occupants. I believe smaller dwellings need laws where third party managers have greater restrictions and the owners have more obligation. Most renters are being taken advantage beyond reason and fairness.

Building more homes is the answer that developers and investors have. There are other options to help with housing costs like actually regulate investors and developers!

I always love the way the media act as apologists for Biden, and bring on “economists” who do the same. This inflation was caused by one thing: Biden’s assault on the energy sector. Period.

Money printing, trillions spent on wars over the past decade, a pandemic lockdown, invasion of Ukraine upsetting balance in Europe, many more reasons than just energy.

inflation was caused by the stimulus checks. Two choices, help citizens during pandemic with free money or don't help the citizens, have a worse pandemic because people couldn't stay home. Government made their pick.

Trump contributed to this also. He was the one who initiated the stimulus checks. Biden isn't the only one to blame. Also no one foresaw a pandemic. But there was someone who failed to act quickly to the many signs of it

I don’t know if this guys is lying on purpose or if he is just misinformed. There are so many empty houses coming on to the market as new construction and there are houses not selling, apartment buildings are the same. I’m in one of the high areas in the Bay Area of CA and the rents are going down and houses are down $50k plus. I hope he is just misinformed and not intentionally misleading the public.
