In this episode of Turn Based I'm joined by The Well Red Mage from KZread channel GameLogica to discuss religion and mythology in JRPGs, how they're presented and at what point they started to appear in these games.

This episode was so thought provoking fair play though. Sounds like we need a erek Ladd breakdown on final fantasy summons and mythology 😁

I'll tell you what - just the title alone had me really excited! I think it's so great you had Gamelogica on - love finding people that also like to pick their brain and think about the lore and the symbolism in the amazing jrpgs. especially after starting chrono trigger. and playing other games like ff7, earthbound, or kingdom hearts. just diving into how a game can make you choose different choices that could effect the story completely. mostly speaking of games like chrono trigger/ff7. how some of the characters and story telling is based on mythology (which is one of my favorite topics to learn about by far) and religion. definitely don't have to believe in any of that to at least appreciate and enjoy or think about the values and little things that you can learn while playing these. that is why they're such great games for not only that era but for years later and made to be remastered. some games still do it today but i cant help but really really appreciate games of the early days and how much attention to detail they took in certain aspects of this. thanks for this video. would love to see more deep dives into this or topics like this!

This was a great episode! Religion can be a touchy subject but with its influence, we have gotten so many amazing game stories and art out of it. Also, your studio is looking slick!

Such a fantastic episode! It was a new and interesting take on things, and not something that I would ever think to put together, but now I know that it exists, it makes perfect sense. Well done!

Excellent discussion here. Like stumbling upon an oasis in a desert. FF4 was definitely inspired by Dante’s Inferno (check out the names of the Archfiends) and the first stage of the final boss in FF6 is Dante’s depiction of Lucifer (and the rest of the boss is Purgatorio/Paradiso).
