    If the water is returned to the stream from where it came from there is no waste and the only loss in respect of the stream is what is being taken away for the humans use. What a magic system. The animation and explanation are both perfect, Well done !!!!.

    Is there optimal diameter of the delivery pipe in relation to intake pipe? And is the size of accumulator important? Does it affect the speed of valves opening and closing?

    So... the water source must be higher than the pump in order to work? Therefore this will not pump water from a well 25-30 deep?

    Is there a way for water being released from the waste valve to be recycled back into the initial holding tank/ river where this is being pumped from? I'm not just wondering where wastewater goes if this pump is placed outdoors to take water from a stream or lake, but what if someone wanted to recycle water upwards as part of a sustainable system?

    Hi Luke, thank you for your visit to my channel. Waste water goes to the river or stream where it is taken originally from. But not to the same elevation, it is disposed some location which has lover elevation from the source. Only your downstream neighbor can benefit from it, not you. As long as sun shines it will cause the water evaporation which will eventually come as rain, some part of this rain will fall just upper stream location of your house. Which will make your ram pump operate. The sun and the earth combination act like giant heat engine which give us sustainable energy.

    Dear Jack , thank you for your comment end visit to my channel. Yes you are right. As far as I know all the energy sources by the sun or stars like sun. Coal, oil, wood, wind, tidal, solar and some others that I might forgot. In turn all the stars use fusion to convert hydrogen to helium, helium to Lithium and so on. We might think that the hydrogen is the coal of the universe.

    So the pump have 2 vales, each one will take turn to open and close as the water pressure change. At the first vale there is a air tube, which use as a air pressure pump to push the water up. As the water flow the pressure shut the 2nd vale, which then build pressure one the first vale force it to open now water will flow into the first vale and fill up tube. So the air in the air tube got compressed, to a point the aire pressure is strong enough to push, and shut the first vale at the same time push the water up. Vale 2 open up when the water pressure is reduced due to water flow into vale 1. The water flow pass vale 1 to vale 2, then force vale 2 to shut, then vale 1 open. So one vale open, other close, then using compressed air to push air upward. Very nice ideas.

    How many liters of water I can lift up with a drop of 1 foot with a water discharge of 3 liters of water per second? I mean just with gravity from a source?

    One could insert a non return valve so the output pipe would not pressurize the balloon or tyres or tube. Surely there is a balance point Where the strong balloon or tyres or tube can provide extra thrust to extract more water from the accumulator If the tube is able to contract more than the pressure build up in the accumulator? or should i say more than the head pressure required to trust water to the top of the output, but less than the pressure coming in to the accumulator. I think we are on to a major breakthrough in Ram pump pumping technology here?

    Build it. Let us know what happens. Put check valves half way up the pressurized discharge line, and at the end next to the water storage barrel. And one fourth of the way up

    What I don't understand is why a creek at higher elevation is required...it seems that one could create/install a high pond and once that pond is filled...water is constantly running uphill to fill the high pond.

    In the waste valve, is it possible to save the water that comes out in that valve, for example adding some weight to the valve so that the water connot comes out.

    Waste water is a necessary both for water turbines and for ram pumps. If you close exit gate of a turbine you can not produce electricity. Water just accumulates in the dam lake. At the same token, if you close waste valve no water will pass through the ram pump, water will just run down hill outside from reservoir. By passing water from ram pump, you can pump small portion of that water to higher elevation and release the large portion of that water down hill.

    Could the wastewater be captured at that lower point, (reservoir under the Ram pump), then run downhill to another Ram pump which would then refill the upper reservoir? There would still be loss but recaptured energy in the upper reservoir. I think there's a problem here but I'm just not seeing it. That being said I have used the Ram pump and they are fascinating devices. I think the answer may be in head drop.

    Why would you waste time trying to recapture water to fill the upper reservoir? These systems are to be used on year round creeks/streams/springs. The reservoir would fill on it's own, indefinitely.

    @@Tsumarinai The dam analogy explains it best. You want 'free' energy from the flowing water, to pump some of the water uphill, for your use. You do not waste this precious 'free' energy and time pumping the flow water back into the dam. Rain and gravity will ensure your river is always flowing; thus your water and free energy are replenished. What happens downstream is your neighbor's issue, not yours.

    No, you can't get something from nothing. The energy to pump the water uphill has to come from somewhere. The "waste water" must be generated because we need a certain amount of water to flow downhill so that we can capture its energy.

    @@AgentFriday I understand what Debbie is saying and yes, I think her system would work but, unless you are trying to catch all the water, there is no point in using a solenoid. A ram pump is usually used to pump a small % of the water in a stream to a higher elevation. The waste water will just find its way back to the stream. A ram pump is capturing the energy in the stream, using some of that energy to pump water to a higher elevation, then, that extra "waste" water, is returned to the stream. There is no need to use a solenoid, instead, we are using the energy of the falling water, then that "waste" water ends up running down hill, usually back to the stream. I think Debbie was thinking along the lines of not wanting to waste any water but we aren't really wasting any water, we are just using it's energy and returning it to the stream.

    The energy to create lift comes from flow inertia. No flow, no inertial energy. You're using a creek to power the unit, the water is not wasted, it's routed back into the creek to carry on with it's original journey. You are simply taking from the creek, what is used for human purposes.

    1. Water flows downhill which forces the waste water valve to shut 2. When the valve suddenly shuts the weight of the water flowing downhill wants to continue flowing in that direction (water hammer) causing a sudden rise in pressure 3. The sudden rise in pressure causes the valve to the outlet of the pump to open 4. While the water flows through the outlet, it causes air pressure in the accumulator tank to rise 5. When the air pressure rises enough in the accumulator, that causes the outlet valve to close. 6. While the outlet valve is closed, the excess air pressure in the acumulator forces the water uphill. 7. Also when the outlet valve closes, this causes the water to stop flowing on the inlet side which lets the waste water valve open via gravity. 8. As the water flows from inlet to waste this causes the waste valve to close again from the flow of water. Which starts the cycle again

But, I think some pyramids were for pumping water uphill, and others could have been used as hyperbaric chambers, or both... For example, one pyramid could have been used to pump the water from an aquaduct near the Nile (closer back then) and fill a reservoir in another pyramid that would use water volume to create air pressure (inside the queens chamber of the great pyramid for example) which could then be used to run pneumatic tools and create electricity through the use of turbines, or pressurize chambers inside smaller pyramids or the so called Kings chamber. High technology, limited resources. (Soon after the flood, if you believe that sort of thing)

    It depends heavily on the diameter of parts and size and type of valves. And material of the valve and pipes. The momentary pressure spike has so many variables it's not possible to calculate. Only to build it and measure it.

    This drawing needs improvement... With this cartoon, people (like me.!.) will tend to think, why not simply run a pipe across from right to left.? The pump is needless.! What you need to change, is, the level of the structure on the right of the screen needs lowering somewhat. If the diagram showed the left side's level to be OBVIOUSLY higher than the right side, it would make much more sense. At the moment, it makes the pump seem pointless. Just a suggestion 😉

    Thank you for your visit and comment. I think putting a third check valve will decrease efficiency. This is because when check valve closes the momentum created by the water will be absorbed with check valve instead pumping extra water. Also life span of new check valve be very short compared the others. This will create maintenance problems.

    If they use siphoning, water should have a higher elevation than their field. And in between height of water climbing should be no more than five meters.

    This is a tough question to answer for me. Elevation of the source could be depended on the elevation of the output and also the amount of input volume and output volume you want to get.

    Minimum 2-4 feet of head for source water to pump. Depends on configuration and flow. I watched a guy use a four foot drop to make 32 psi. That could go up about 70 feet.

    If the accumulator was a type or balloon rather than a rigid vessel would more water be thrust up the delivery pipe?

    No the accumulator needs to be ridged to produce air pressure to push any water up the delivery pipe. If it was a balloon or expanding it would not develop enough pressure to the push the water up and also the head of water from the reservoir would burst the balloon.

    Shouldn't the water in the pipe on the left side of the waste valve remain blue (unpressurized) instead of turning red with the rest of the pressurized water? It seems to me that the waste valve and open waste pipe would require it to be that way.

    Thank you for your visit and question. Actually, the waste valve is not on at all the time. It periodically opens and closes. When it is closed the flow on the left turns red, on the other hand, if the waste valve is open the flow becomes blue. If the waste valve was on all the time there would be no water flow to higher ground. The ram pump almost works just like German V-1 flying bomb which was world's first guided missile. V-1 ram engine had flaps in front of the engine. Whenever there was ignition, increased pressure inside the burning chamber would force the flaps to close, When the exhaust gas expelled from the exhaust valve the kinetic energy of gases creates a vacuum inside the burning chamber. This low pressure would force the flaps to open. This periodic opening and closing motion of flaps create a buzzing sound and flying bomb also called as buzz bomb by British.

    Thank you for visiting my channel. The short answer to your question is NO. Thing about a dam, if you close exit pipe you can not generate electricity. Same principle apply in this pump too.

    No, because the pressure tank would not compress, and the water would stay in the pipe... Obviously it would need an alternative spillover point

    It should work in the irrigation canal in the winter when water is flowing through it. Though the flow rate might be an issue as far as pumping ability.

    So you could have “infinite” energy as long as water moves downhill. You constantly run the water you moved uphill through a turbine, back into another holding tank downhill doing the same thing, and this just keeps going

    Dear Arrad, The only way to move water uphill is by the suns energy and generate electricity by passing same amount water from the turbine. Even that is not generate electricity to the infinity. We know that sun will die in the future. Also, places we consider becomes flat lands by erosion. In short, in the nature there is no infinite energy for us to use.

    You certainly could put the output tube into the river before the inlet pipe, but then you are using 80% of the water to move 20% back to the river. If the river were to stop flowing by itself, you would quickly run out of your own waste water, sending 80% of that 20% downstream the second time around until there isn't enough water left in the river to power the device.

    Should be able to run the water(that was pumped and/or before it went to ram pump) across a waterwheel and make electricity. Make electricity twice if you have the height.

    I have doubt in ram pump, can we do it without water waste (valve wastage)? . Always waste water is falling down so can we reuse(send back to source bucket)???

    Do you send water back to a dam after generating electricity? You can't. The energy passing from the turbine is not wastewater, it is water that generated electricity and loss it's potential energy. The same is true for the ram pump, the water called wastewater, actually is used water, that water pushes a small percentage of the water from reservoir to higher elevation.

    i wondered this , i think its when the flow through it increased enough to push it closed ,when the water sped up enough. then it slams the water into the accumulator.

    I am still waiting for someone to properly explain why the waste valve opens after it shuts off, so far nobody explained ( math, physics ) behind it, sure enough, I built one , and it never opened by it self , I suspect due to the water pressure keeping it closed,

    It wastes a lot of water in the process. Is it possible to use electrostatic electricity or magnet on the outer pipe,water inside will have an opposite charge and will tend to spin. If there’s a kind of Archimedes screw inside the pipe the spinning water will probably rise!

    It is misconception that many people think waste water is wasted. Actually it is conservation of energy principle. If you want to pump water to higher elevation, you need more energy to do that. We use waste water energy to do that and discard the water to the environment. If you want less water discarded than you should reduce the hight that water pumped.

    Yeah. I got it in the end but there is more in this video than a simple explanation. I think breaking it down rather than talking over a continuously moving diagram would have made it easier to grasp.

    OK, I found the answer. Typical efficiency is 60% but up to 80% is possible.

    Oh well, it turns our that 60-80% does not refer to how much water is delivered. The amount of water that goes through depends on source and destination heights. If the source is 2m above the ram and water is pumped 10m above the ram, only 20% of the water will be delivered to destination. So basically the % of water delivered = height from ram to source / height from ram to destination * 100. So in our example 2m / 10m *100 = 20% of water delivered. AND THEN you take that 60-80% energy efficiency of the pump to see how much water you will actually get at the destination. So you don't get 20% of water delivered as in the example above, but you get 60-80% of those 20%. If the efficiency is say 70%, then you get 70% of 20% which is 14%. Not very inspiring numbers. But it can be done on the cheap, requires no fuel of electricity, and it's very simple system not much to go wrong. So it's a good choice if you have enough water an the source. Otherwise solar panel powered pump seems like a better choice.
