Ralf Rangnick started as a player manager, but quickly became a sought after manager in the 1990s in Germany. Rangnick is credited with developing one of the most-used tactics in football: gegenpressing. Popularized by the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp. Rangnick has since moved toward a more sporting director type of role, helping shape RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg, as well as Hoffenheim in the past. Now, Ralf Rangnick is linked with Manchester United as a potential manager, and later, as a club director. And now, it's looking like Manchester United have signed Ralf Rangnick.

In germany we all know this guy is amazing and can change the whole club. The problem with rangnick is that he wants absolute power and he wants to make all the decisions. That sounds like a good thing and it is, but the problem for the Management of a Club is that rangnick is not afraid to tell the guys who signed him after a few weeks: your work over the last years was trash, you should be sacked. In other words he is the opposite of Ole.

This. He would be perfect for Salford, wanting to go to the Premiership. He would be institutional chaos in any established club that isn't willing to hand dictatorial controls to him for the life of a contract. And no one in the Premiership is going to do that.

Wolfgang Frank is a manager legend of my home club Mainz 05. Recently the new training facilities were named after him. His tactics were revelutionary in German football since he adopted the back four from AC Milan and made them successful in the second Bundesliga. So he definetly was the first manager to apply the basics of modern gegenpress in professional football. Ironically the manager who puts gegenpress to the grave right now is also coming from Mainz 05 - Thomas Tuchel. 3-4-1-2 - nothing more to add...

It's pretty much irrelevant, as I sincerely doubt he'd want that sort of situation. It's basically the mess he walked into at Schalke on his 2nd stint on steroids. And that nearly finished him in football. There are superstars in the dressing room who have never played his way. And he'd want them gone. There are egos in the board. He would clash with them. People call Tuchel prickly. But the Professor is brutally honest. Always. And it's 100% his way or the highway.

@@kingkingf I said Bielsa because he too has a laundry list of talented managers whose ideas he has inspired. Guadiola, Pochettino, Gallardo, Emery, Sampaoli, Spalletti, I'm forgetting some others. But also don't forget that Bielsa, like Rangnick, has built some teams that punched way above their weight and only just fell short like Bilbao who came close to winning a league and European cup double. Then also, he put together the Chile team that went on to win back to back Copa America. I see some parallels there with Rangnicks Hoffenheim and with some of his work setting up Leipzig for their current success.

As a Man Utd fan witnessing one of the worst Board room and executives in football, I’m very envious of what he did for the RB group, I’m pretty sure he’s set a blueprint of a modern club. He’s just created that factory line of players and managers a long that clear and consistent philosophy. For players they can go to Leifering Salzburg Leipzig or come from the academy of NY or Leipzig or be poached from a euro academy (eg nkunku). Managers also have their coaching taught to them by what Rangnick set up and Salzburg has churned out great coach after great coach playing the same way, Rose to Marsch to Jaissle. It’s brilliant and so efficient

You are giving credit to the wrong man for the pressing game. Credit should go to Jack Charltons and his ireland team, It used be called put them under pressure, there even a song called put them under pressure.

Genuine Question : If Rangnick is so good why doesn't his CV have bigger clubs the likes of RM or Bayern or City ? Also he has not been able to win the elite competitions, why is that ?

Because he demands to have too much power/too many roles within a single organization - that's why his masterpiece is building up Hoffenheim and RB Salzburg/Leipzig from the ground up, in a sense. Hiring him would mean firing people in other important roles, which isn't an attractive prospect for many clubs.

Tuchel's tactics destroyed gegenpress. 3-4-1-2 with fife at the back in defense is really really hard to play against. While attacking, one of the CFs and the AMF move towards the half spaces at the box wich creates a numerical advantage, especially since the full backs hug the touch line and play like wingers. Then you still got three CBs and one dmf at the back that only move backwards when the opponent is on counter attack. They only intercept once the opponent tries to get inside the box... Superb but not apectacular tactics IMO.

Anyone who knows of Rangnick & German football know that he’s done some great work over the years & he will always be held in high regard because of that but those calling for him to be the next Manchester Utd manager are very out of touch. He has vast experience but none of that at a top top club with the expectations like United. I could go on & on why it’s not a suitable match but anyone who has a good knowledge of the world game will understand. Right now there are only a few options to replace Solskjaer as manager & Rangnick is not one of those, he just seems to be the ‘hipsters’ choice

What people are calling for isn't instant success or anything at all , it's for him to take interim untill end of season so united can get top manager like ten hag as top managers aren't willing to leave midseason. And then ralf can be dof couse let's be honest Manchester United needs an actuall football brain and not some banker like ed Woodward

It's because he demands a lot of power , he wants to build a club from the ground up . Madrid or Bayern or some of the other big clubs can not give him that much power . Also he's brought success to most of the clubs he's joined , what do you mean by trophies he's won so far ? The clubs he's joined have mostly been mid table , second or third tier clubs and he's brought success to these clubs with little to no money . Only decent club he joined was Leipzig and he got them to the Bundesliga from Germany's fourth division and even Leipzig don't have the kind of money to spend like Madrid , City , Bayern and these big clubs have . I'd say given all he's done he is a pretty successful manager and the perfect fit for United if they hope to be competitive again .

The man who shaped modern football? Or a guy who coached the coaches. Or an interesting man who built two clubs. But the man who built modern football? He was at Barca? Wow. Who knew? At Bayern? Missed that. At Chelsea. Wow! At Real. God what a champion. Has won as much as Bielsa? He must be good. So good, he is in Moscow. He must really be something? How has every big club never appointed him? They must all be idiots!

No he didn't. First, Liverpool do not only play a gegenpress style, and often try to hold possession a lot more against "weaker" sides. Liverpool had 70% possession against West Ham. That's hardly the characteristic of a gegenpress side. Second, and more importantly, every team has an off day. If Moyes can repeat his victory 3 out of 4 times, then he's on to something. Moyes himself said they tried the same strategy last match, and it didn't go well. West Ham was just better on the day. They deserve all the credit for that, but I'd reserve judgement on the "crushing" of the gegenpress.

Moyes beat Liverpool because West Ham had everything right. Set piece, transitions, brute strength, pace and teamwork, home advantage, poor Liverpool performance. That is how good you have to be and how favourable conditions to beat Liverpool. It wasn't just down to the midblock otherwise with the number of teams who play that style in Premier League Liverpool would have lost a whole lot more
