    What I've learned: Don't put a space heater directly against a couch, and don't turn off the safety features. Good to know, I was planning on doing that this weekend.

    Unfortunately, some of the older units don't have this feature. I had one catch on fire because my niece (about 7 years old) placed a towel too close to the unit.. Thankfully, I was able to put the fire out.

    As an electrician i see these things used in old buildings all the time. The reason is old drafty house, inefficient heating systems in the building. So they run a 1500w load on a shitty 100 year old knob & Tube circuit. I've seen these things start fires in the wall.

  • @momentomori1747

    @momentomori1747

    Жыл бұрын

    It draws enough current to potentially melt cheap extension cords, and if the space heater is pointed too close it may melt the cord in general. If you must use an extension cord, use a 10 or 12 gauge one just to be safe, and avoid plugging it into a power strip. It's already almost 13 amps, so you don't really want to plug anything else in with it.

    This was a demo, for one, and they just wanted to illustrate a point. Moving the space heater further away would likely have created a fire, too, but just have taken longer. Also, you do know that space heaters have cords, right? Do you have pets? They can get a paw caught on the cord and accidentally drag the space heater too close to a bed or couch. And a lot of people like to keep space heaters next to them while sleeping to stay warm. If you toss and turn, it doesn't take much to knock that space heater on your bedside table down, or bring it near you, or something.

    My question... What about the radiating oil heaters with fins? You know, the knee high ones that just heat oil up in each fin with an electric coil? I mean, I get that they are hella hot, but will 1 or 2 feet make very much difference? It seems like anything that blankets the heat (I've draped blankets over one to isolate the heat for a few minutes), could potentially cause a fire, but what about an open area with nothing draped over it? If anyone has a video or has an anecdotal/visual/photo evidence of such, I'd love to see it! That way I'll know how safe this type of heater is! Thank you! 😊😊

    Since there is a thermostat controlling the maximum oil temperature below the auto ignition temperature of fabrics, they should be safe. However any electrical device can fail and needless to say faulty or overloaded wiring can cause a fire.

    those are literally the safest kind of electric space heater available. The infrared ones shown in this video have components that easily exceed a thousand degrees and can ignite flammable materials instantly, the big oil filled ones with fins never have any part exceeding a couple hundred degrees or so and are effectively incapable of igniting normal combustible house materials.

So guys If can give you ANY advice just buy the little white plastic fan heaters they are 100% safer and they still do an Amazing job heating your house :)

    While arson investigators look for clues that reveal accelerants, you can't tell if the source of the fire is a source of temporary heat. Like a bullet heater temporarily facing an electrical outlet. Firefighters know this best.

    Get a $50+, 1500 watt heater from a big brand, that wasn't returned to store previously (no tape or dents on box). The 500 watt type won't work well, is cheaply made, and outputs less heat per moment than your body needs to warm up, wasting more heat in the process. Amazon isnt reliable bc anyone can sell Chinese knock offs, and returned merchandise on the site pretty easily. Keep your new heater at least 3 feet away from everything. And unplug it when pets/kids are around but you aren't.

    “IF” you were to by-pass the safety features (over-heat switch, tip-over switch, etc.) of any space heater AND you place it that close to ANYTHING, combustible or not… then you are (and I’m NOT going to say that you “deserve it” because I would NEVER wish/hope that on ANYONE… even my own worse enemy) definitely going to be fighting a fire and rapidly growing flames within a few minutes!!! So, beyond a shadow of any and all doubt, you are simply asking for a MAJOR ISSUE if you were to do something a stupid as what they did in the video. And before anyone says anything… I kNOW that they were just doing it to show what “could” happen if that was done… but surely people are brighter than that, right!?!?!?

    This so - called "Space Heater" also caused the Kaprun Disaster some 5 years ago (I'm not sure) with about a dozen people dead. In the train that led to the ski slope, an ordinary, Home Depot - type electric heater was mounted in the driver's cabin. Hydraulic oil dripping from a broken pipe onto the heater set the train ablaze while it was in a long tunnel sloping upwards to the station. When some the persons trapped inside finally made it out of the burning train, they fled upwards and were killed by the fumes, while many others died in the train. Oh, I forget: NEVER buy a Chinese - made heater, if your life is dear! It's cheapo, but it can kill you! That's the Chinese revenge on the Western World! I don't like that Real Estate bloke in the Oval Office, but in that point he is right!

There are high quality Chinese stuff, a lot actually, that are designed/made to follow western standards, but those are just like German made or Japan made, not cheap. The cheap stuff on the other hand, those are literally crap, cause factories have to use the cheapest material and the cheapest manpower to save cost, so often very flimsy, not durable at all, breaks down easily, those are built for the purpose of being cheap.
