You hit the nail on the head with this vid. Prada is the perfect brand that connects luxury and elegance with wearability. They set the tone for the nineties against the glitz and glam of the versace's, and westwood's.

The way how Prada popularized nylon as a luxury fabric was that she was part of the fashion movement back at pre-2000 that focused on a futuristic/tech aesthetic that captured the new millennium zeitgeist. Fabric research and development was so evident in the collections of Prada, Jil Sander, Issey Miyake, etc. during this era that these brands ushered in a collective change in how the market views high end, luxury fashion and materials (such as polyvinyl, polyester, metal fibers) as an extension. That said, nylon’s status as a luxury material is a testament to Miuccia Prada’s genius. She was a designer who wants to challenge our preconceptions of beauty, taking things that are ugly and making them desirable. That’s exactly what Prada stood for before (the brand sold itself out imo) and that’s what she exactly did for nylon. And from a practical standpoint, they are amazing. I have Prada nylon bags from the 90s that look new, with no fraying. It’s sad though that the majority of the market these days just see this bag as a relatively affordable, cute throwback moment that they’ll just display on IG and not appreciate the brilliance of the material. It’s great that this video helps people know more about it.

I've had a couple of Prada nylon bags and it's so different from your regular nylon. It has a sheen to it, almost satiny yet so durable. I'd take this instead of coated, ehm LV, canvas.

Prada has recently become my favorite luxury brand! The brand is so elegant and simple. I love that so many of their bags can be worn in both casual and classy settings.

my first 2 designer purchases were prada’s nylons bags!! love their stuff. the durability of nylon & prada’s clean designs are what made me believe i will love the pieces for years to come 🖤

I love Prada nylon. My fav pieces are their nylon mens bags and backpacks.

Once I purchased a Prada bag, I was given the choice to choose between the leather version or the nylon version. I chose the later. A lot of my friends thought I chose nylon cos it was cheaper. But I deliberately chose it cos it's iconic to the brand! XD

OMG THANK YOU I'm new to purchasing more luxury brands (mostly resale) and I was sooooo confused as to why Prada's nylon bags were so expensive and coveted especially as their popularity hits streetwear. Thank you for this fashion history. It really helps me appreciate fashion items.

Just ordered a vintage Prada bag from Depop. Looks like it's from the 90s or early 2000s, so I'm really excited.

Prada is my favorite brand. Bought every color of the nylon short sleeve shirts and long sleeves, they are some of the most comfortable and low key elegant shirts on there in that space. Best brand that is practical and wearable and reasonably priced. .

Huge fan of prada nylon, all my product products have at least some incorporation of nylon in them.

I didn't know about nylon grades and fashion at that time. I've always thought nylon was a cheap material since it's practically used everywhere. You've just changed my perspective on Prada and I'll definitely be looking into the brand more closely.

What you said about people seeing leather as “more premium” is so true. I’ve been looking to get Prada nylon bag for a while and my mom is so confused I want to spend that amount of money on a bag that isn’t leather. Also, great video 🙂🤝

It’s hard for me to hate Prada as an institution when the decisions that lead to racially insensitive mistakes have nothing to do with Miuccia Prada. She’s the creative director of the brand and because of how huge the Prada group is she doesn’t have time to work on the capsule accessory collections so that whole saga genuinely had nothing to do with her. Not that it would happen but it would be good if they outed the names of people that work specifically on those projects just so we know who the bad eggs are that need cultural education. I don’t believe in cancel culture as sometimes these things are more a case of a lack of education on the history of minorities as opposed to coming from a place of blatant racism.

It was very timely

Only qualm I have with Prada’s “luxary” nylon is it’s actual functionality and technical innovation of their nylon. Brands like Arcteryx (mainline) are constantly trying to innovate and bring forth new functional fabrics for a fraction of the price. I understand luxury garments aren’t meant to be taken to the mountains and used in a ski trip but man for that price cannot justify at all regardless of the “precise” tailoring.

Arcteryx isn't even as good as Canada Goose. I bought a parka, and regretted it, as I live in Minnesota.

I’ve been in fabric making for a while. I wouldn’t say nylon is hard to construct its just when you apply heat to form to a bag or had it tends to get damaged in the process. But what I love about Prada is they perfected it with their own style.

Now it isn’t hard to construct but in 1979 with extremely limited technology and resources coupled with the fact that factories at the time (which were few) that had the required infrastructure were not tailored to making clothing and accessories out of the pocone nylon material. So to think that Prada were able to produce products that were so high quality you can still buy some of them in good condition on the second hand market is very impressive. In terms of human history, nylon as a synthesised material is less than 100 years old and the possibilities of it have been greatly accelerated with the advancement of technology in the 21st century.

Regardless of how high quality a product is, there are always bound to be defects. This is why warranty exists as you could literally buy an iPhone and it could stop working a month later. This does not mean that the majority of the products aren’t high quality. Another factor to note is how you’re using it (some people genuinely force items into bags and consistently fill it past weight capacity and then complain about the quality). I’ve had a Prada nylon tote bag for 4 years and not had an issue with it. Prada also offer a repair service depending on your location.

However the quality is going down hill after 2014 . Same with LV. Don’t really know what happen but the quality is not like it used to be

This just makes me wonder. Wouldn't a nylon dress or shirt make you really sweaty? As a water resistant material, while protecting you from rain and such, it kind of locks in your sweat.

@@onlygafabotwhatigafbout8495 depends what type of Nylon. Prada uses more industrial grade nylon which is less breathable than the type of Nylon used in activewear. It’s still quote on quote breathable but not something I’d recommend with all the other options

In the 80's and 90's the logo were sought after by the growing middle class not the rich or supper rich.

I actually read a lot of essays, books and other resources to make this video and from what I have gathered it was the case as with everything else. The upper class were buying a lot of these expensive bags to differentiate themselves from lower classes so the middle class went crazy for them as they always aspire to be perceived as being of a higher social class at which point the upper class customers quickly moved onto something else to continue to differentiate themselves. The usual cycle of fashion.

@@FashionRoadman I agree with you but when you look at photos from the 80' and 90's and you see political families, banking families, and industry families they shied away from logos. New money (Arab and Russian) and the middle classes were hungry for logos. I love your channel, I have only been subscribed for about a month and I love how your recherche the subject. I also love that you pronounce brands and names correctly unlike so many channels who act as if it would kill them to look it up.

Glad you enjoy the videos and haha I try my best with the designer names but sometimes with the English tongue it is very difficult to pronounce things like Demeulemeester for example. As far as the 80s and 90s go, ultimately I was born in 1997 so it’s not like I lived through the 80s to see for myself. Someone who lived through that time is in a much better position to give accounts of what it was like. However, looking at Prada resources and some other books on Prada I have, in the early 80s Prada had only 3 stores so a lot of the products they produced were actually not mass produced in huge quantities and were difficult for some people to get their hands on hence why it was something only the upper class could afford and bought. Near the end of the 80s when Prada started to do runway shows they were really having a run in terms of commercial success and scaling the brand exponentially. More wholesale accounts worldwide as well as more stores. This meant they had the resources to produce things in larger quantities to satisfy the huge demand for the nylon products which in turn put the upper class customers off the bags as they became too “common” for them and therefore just a product that the budding middle class who were gunning for the upper class “look.” Some great fashion writers like Suzy Menkes and Tim Blanks have given general accounts of how the luxury customer base shifted in the late 80s and early 90s especially.

You keep saying people expect luxury products to be made of leather, leather is nearly always cheaper then fabric, thats totally wrong, and as for saying Prada had a difficult time using nylon in production and it cost them more to produce nylon products then using other fabric, there are specialist manufacturers who use nylon all the time so please stop trying to give prada an excuse for charging massive profit margins for products that cost next to nothing to manufacture. I have worked in high end design companies for years so know what I am talking about, dont get me wrong I love prada, but no way is it expensive getting nylon clothing/products produced.

I’ll have to verify this but either way, something being made in China doesn’t make it low quality. It all comes down to quality control. The reason why China gets such a bad rap is because when companies produce in China they specifically want to cut costs and maximise profits so they instruct the factories to cut corners, leading to low quality products. I buy basics (plain sweaters, shirts and coats) from China through a friend that travels there a lot and the quality of the stuff I get is absolutely insane despite being very cheap.

Sorry but i just donk like nylon, even if its a luxury brand, to me its just a really boring fabric, it looks cheap, but most of all, it has no Soul. When you buy something made in nylon you can feel they just made you buy something, some another product fabricated to create desire, a piece of plastic made in series.

Am sorry but am not spending thousands of dollars on Nylon irrespective of what grade it is.

Sorry but for me nylon (even in a high grade) is not luxury, natural fibers are the height of luxury.
