How practical is the PoB in real world conditions?

Спорт

The "Peregrin on Birk" is a streamliner made for everyday riding. Its very fast on the track but how practical is it in the real world?
I think you will be surprised.

    Awesome machine, I've seen it racing in Monza last year, kept average speed 64 km/h for one hour and a half and power meters said average power was about 180 W (data found in a forum or whatever). I wonder if it has motorcycle brakes or parachute for steep descents... I didn't buy one only because of that extra zero on the right side of the price! 😅

    very instructive, many thanks for this rhubarb. I'not fully convinced about the real world argument -- in my real world there are lots more people on bikes, walking, paying no attention, riding the wrong side of the path, in my world there are many more cars pulling out from somewhere, and my hills can be much longer.

    +rhein228 The video was made for Charles Henry to use as part of his talk on the Peregrin on Birk at the recent Velomobile Seminar in Austria. I am not trying to convince anyone that the PoB is more practical than a DF or a Mango. Rather that point of the video is that the PoB is much more usable on the road than many people have thought a 2-wheel streamliner ever could be. The video simply demonstrates some of the things that the PoB is capable of.

    @@glenstickley3539 You are right Glen. I think this bike would be incredibly practical. In all honesty it doesn't take much more effort in stopping and starting than any other bike. Throw in that it is much more efficient, offers weather protection and safety, and has much more speed potential than other bikes this is an incredible piece of engineering.

    There’s so much to this that was done right, at the expense of space. I’d imagine using 3 wheels can fix that problem if you kept the front exactly the way it is and have 2 wheels at the rear. Great way to add a boot, a power source or even a folding bicycle! Plus with a rear differential and the front wheel to turn 90° in both directions, it could have a sub 1.0m turning radius.

  • @Mumpitzable

    @Mumpitzable

    3 жыл бұрын

    nearly like the superawesome looking velotilt, but not a good idea. freehubs instead of diff is more efficient, a gear means always lost energy, a pro example is the quattrovelo rearaxle. if you wouldnt make it wider at the rearend (which would make the streamline shape much worse), then it needs the wheels extra faired and outside the vehicle... this causes more drag than you could imagine. and the stability in corners from a 3-wheeler with 2 wheels at the rear is horrible compared with 2 at the front and 1 rear... the reasons why nearly every vm has its wheels at the front and not outside of its groundshape. this makes automatically a dropshape, which is the best. the pob has also a dropshape when you look at it from above. when the frontwheel would be able to do 90° then there must be a big/wide cutout in the botton = a lot drag. what drag can cause: a dfxl at 49kmh needs without hood 190w, instead of 157w with hood. a small child pennant makes it already 2-3kmh slower at speeds around 40-50kmh. greetings

    Hard question to answer Doug. The PoB doesn't belong to me and I've never ridden it. Aerodynamically its faster on a straight smooth road, but I think the DF would be faster in most real world conditions, with faster takeoffs, faster cornering on uneven surfaces etc. The PoB is more susceptible to cross winds than the DF as well. But as the video shows, its a LOT more practical than you'd imagine.

    Seems to be a few principle advantages over a 3-wheeled velomobile of similar construction: lower frontal area, lower rolling resistance due to one less wheel, and perhaps slightly lower weight from lower shell surface area. Looks like it’d be fun!

  • @rossbrumby1957

    @rossbrumby1957

    It has been scientifically proven that 3 wheels has lower rolling resistance than 2 regarding bike wheels and shared load. In practicality the low frontal area of the 2 wheeler makes a much bigger efficiency.

    @@rossbrumby1957 It would seem that 2 wheels would have less, but if you have a link to share then I'd love to read about it. I get that the PoB likely has less wind resistance than a Mango and maybe all velomobiles. I am only on a V20 so both would leave me in the dust all things being equal but I love learning new stuff about faired recumbents, velomobiles and streamliners.

    Id say the biggest advantage is that single track dynamics is safer than multi-track. Only one track of potholes to worry about; no overturning moment generated by potholes, no overturning moment generated by cornering. Much safer at speed for those reasons.

  • @AngelLestat2

    I don't see the point to use Velomobile if they don't have electrical assistance. Just using a on wheel motor with some batteries and regen. It makes the vehicle way way more useful. Aerodynamics has a real advantage if your average speed is above 40 km/h. And if you don't suffer a lot the climbing. An electric motor assist solve all those issues, it would allow you to have higher speeds up to 90 km/h with ease, it allows you to climb and regen power. it allows you to go to your work without getting sweaty. Small solar panels can charge your vehicle meanwhile it is on parking increasing your range. Without electric assistance, a bicycle would be always more useful and cheap.

    +Daniele G It does get pushed around a bit in strong crosswinds, but really only at high speed. The PoB is faster than a DF on a race track, no question, due to better aerodynamics, but the gap is closed a lot out on the street. In many scenarios, the DF would be faster. Its marginal either way though and would not be the deciding factor.

    the biggest problem that you did not mention here is Breaking Distance at high speed. Let's say you're going 60kph on a road, how many meters to stop in a emergency situation. It's the same problem with Road bikes (with 25mn tires), there is not enough surface for efficient braking, without talking on wet surfaces. That's why those vehicule won't be homologated on the road (i mean roads above 50kph).

    "Real world conditions", you say? You guys are driving on the wrong side of the road, down there - THAT's pretty unreal. Also, in northern Illinois and most other parts of the Midwest, the weather is not as predictable as it is where you are; a little rain, a little snow, maybe some sleet at times and pretty soon, the PoB is on its side, sliding across the pavement - ruining that beautiful paint job. I'm thinking that in Switzerland, they ride these indoors, if the weather isn't just right. All seriousness aside, I agree with what MINO73 said, "I didn't buy one only because of that extra zero on the right side of the price!".
