How Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) Works?

The Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK), with both manual gearshift and an automatic mode, enables smooth gear changes with no interruption in the flow of power. This results in significantly faster acceleration and lower fuel consumption, without having to sacrifice the ease of automatic transmission.
In total, PDK has seven gears at its disposal. Gears 1 to 6 have a sports ratio and top speed is reached in 6th gear. The 7th gear has a long ratio and helps to reduce fuel consumption even further.
PDK is essentially two half gearboxes in one and thus requires two clutches -- designed as a double wet clutch transmission.
Clutch 1 controls the first half gearbox, which contains the odd gears (1, 3, 5, 7) and reverse. Clutch 2 controls the second, which contains the even gears (2, 4, 6).

Doppelkopplung is literal translation of double clutch. Well, or the other way around ;)

The pdk is the quickest shifting transmission in the world, Porsche originally developed it with zf.
Love it! less tension on breaking too.

I wonder why they cant make the gap between the clutch itself and the thing that clamps it for shorter shift times??

Gap is already minimal on every transmission, they made similar 1 clutch "automatic" transmission which can be found in some Lamborghini from around 2004 I think , but they weren't that fast and reliable
Pdk is where it's at, but that 7th won't save you any money at the gas station
That thumb button for gear change is quite a drawback.

@@KrestenGiese wasn't there a non DCT transmission in the prior model ( 911 turbo ) at one point or at least one that did the 24-hours of Daytona with computer controlled? 6-speed manual transmission

Clearly Porsche would like you to think so! "Better" is subjective. What makes a steak better: Seasoning? Tenderness? the way its cooked?

masterofbloopers no. Milliseconds don’t matter on the road and a manual trans is much lighter

I drove a manual 997.1 for 5 years. I traded for a 991.1 PDK last year. It is lovely. Daily drivers both. Tracked both as well. PDK excels on the track and is a godsend in stop-and-go traffic.
Sadly non serviceable
