How Paranoid Schizophrenia Impacts My Life

Ойын-сауық

Allie Burke first started seeing shadows when she was three years old but it wasn’t until she was in her mid-twenties that she was formally diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
When it comes to mental illness, the day to day realities, challenges, and symptoms of living with these conditions are as varied people who have them. VICE is spending time with people who live with mental illness everyday to get a first hand perspective of what their lives look like and how they live with mental illness.

I’m unsure if the visions are fake or real. I always suspected that people like you are experiencing a blending of dimensions. Higher densities. But the medical world isn’t ready for that. I think it’s an overactive third eye. The paranoia comes from a lack of trust after experiencing things no one else can understand

This woman is very high functioning compared to many schizophrenics. She is a real gift to the world as she speaks so clearly on this topic. My sister has it and I know others with such disorganization/catatonia they aren't able to communicate as well. Having folks like her tell their stories help destigmatize and share awareness. Thank you, Allie.

AngelTM a lot of it’s the medication, at least for me it is. I do not have schizophrenia, but I have many other disorders (neurological & autoimmune) that manifest in physical and emotional symptoms. The medication makes me so tired and really keeps me feeling like I’m functioning at half the level I really should be. I used to be a fun, spontaneous, energetic person but the medications and constant symptoms (physical and mental) have just worn me down.

Josue Brown I got told something similar and I went on to have one heck of a good time trying to fit in is not what you should be doing you need to accept that you ain’t well but think about it you have time to exercise with weights assuming that you would like to work on your figure/physique and then you can learn how to repair things and do all kinds of funky cool stuff but no lighting up your farts to impress women as it doesn’t impress them you probably know that already what about riding and repairing bicycles that is fun once you have a good idea about how to change a wheel and an inner tube maybe you can do odd jobs that you can learn from an elder that likes being around you because you have good manners learn how to plumb in a washing machine learn how to paint a room and do it well and you get paid we’ll go on don’t give babe you will learn how to cope you will be the best person you can and when you do that nobody can take that away guess what I am trying to get a valve trombone so that I can go busking to make a little money and meet people that aren’t about your diagnosis try doing something that you have not done in years go and get life by the throat make sure that Josue is a somebody not somebody with a diagnosis but the person that is really good at cheering people up I know that this might sound stupid but as long as you do your best you are as good as anybody else and probably better than many go on don’t give up do be my KZread pen friend if you want God Bless and Good speed

I had a brother who suffered with Schizophrenia. He heard voices. He hear insults and when people laugh, he thinks they are laughing at him. Whenever we were in public, he put on his headphones and turn it up loud to drown out the voices. He had meds, but he said he didn't feel any different than when he didn't take the meds. His disorder doesn't dictate who he was as a person. He loves his family. He loved animals, and he cared about people. When he saw a homeless person, he would give them money if he had some and say God bless. He was smart and compassionate

I have a severe case of major depressive disorder. Suicide runs in my family. It also took me a decade to get adequate treatment. A lot of psychiatrists here in nyc don't take insurance. To make matters worse, I learned I was resistant to several drugs. I did everything except ECT. I qualified for disability a few years ago and that is what allowed me to have better access to healthcare. My current doctor is a genius. Im on 5 different psychotropic meds. It's fucking hard. Even my close friends didn't believe my illness. They just thought that depression was being sad and it's way more than that.

Their general life did not improve, they are still depressed and have serious problems functioning in society. I would strongly advise, try to only use anti-dep med on temporary basis and limit intake asmuch as possible. Vitamine D will help! Eat beef, nuts, salmon. Get in the sun as much as possible and get a solar bed. (from ebay for cheap) Exercise!!!! Get rid of toxic relations! improve your skills, learn things, music, painting, whatever. Meet people , allow yourself to fail!!!,praise your accomplishments. AND NEVER EVER LIE TO YOURSELF ABOUT ANYTHING! This being said, its your life, killyourself if you really want to, dont feel guilty if you do. You are not obligated to live for someone else.

It has been said that about 10% of the worlds population have a third eye/ear - meaning they can see and/or hear spirits. To those who can hear/see spirits - you are NOT crazy, your brain is NOT acting up, the spirits are REAL !! Unfortunately traditional modern medicine which is only about 350 years old, rejects ancient peoples beliefs (of more than 2,000 years) in the existence of spirits. Nowadays, if you tell a schizophrenia patient he might be influenced by spirits, doctors will think you're also CRAZY ! But no amount of DENIAL can negate their existence ! Like it or not ! Spirits communicate by telepathy - mind to mind, that's why ONLY you can see or hear them. Spirits can also DISTORT speech. For example if your friend is talking to you nicely as usual, you'll instead hear him/her MOCKING you, so you'll get ANGRY. That's how spirits make you paranoid & anti-social. They want to isolate you, for themselves !! You're their TOY !! Spirits can also SHAPE SHIFT - appear in ANY form (animal or people) they desire. They can IMITATE other peoples LOOKS and/or VOICES and pretend like real people. Spirits can also produce SOUNDS like knocking on doors, footsteps, crying or screaming people, scratching on walls, police sirens, barking dogs etc. Their plan is to ISOLATE you socially .. for themselves. Make people think you're CRAZY .. even if you re NOT. I've had more than 20 years of this experience so I studied/researched them. I know how and why they operate as such. You can get schizophrenia from various reasons like a serious head injury, use of illegal drugs, practice of black magic, or by experiencing traumatic events like rape, bullying, deadly accident or near-death experience If the problem is spiritual, the solution is also spiritual ! Get close to GOD. I also found out listening to Worship Praise Songs helps block the voices, even drives them far away !! Use a headphone/ earpiece so you don't disturb others. Good luck and Stay Safe.

Thank you for making this video, the more we talk about it the more we don’t have to fear talking about it in public or to our friends and family. I’m 53, I’ve dealt with these problems since I was a child, but finally I can probably say I’m not ashamed at all, it’s a medical problem just like any other medical problem, and it’s time we stop stereotyping, and started embracing.

I used to have severe PTSD and my service dog was able to watch my back and alert me to people too close or people who walk up by me and people kinda naturally kept their distance when i was with my dog. Also, the times i thought I heard stuff but wasn't sure if i really heard those things I'd look to my dog and if they didn't alert me to a sound, then i knew it was all in my head. As a kid i just thought i could hear ghosts or spirits. Now as an adult it's not as often and its different things you can hear. Part of me was wondering if she was vaping weed. For some, weed can really help one sleep, relax, turns off that part of your brain for a little while, calms the anxiety etc. For others weed can cause them to have stronger symptoms and make them worse.

@@sierrachoco5271 thank you. I love individuality. Respect to you as well. My first two sentences were in reference to historical fact. Ancient (and much more advanced civilizations) regarded their “crazies” as the “shamans” of their communities. They held them up rather than try “fix” them like we do today. They were aware that we humans only detect a small amount of the infinitely available information and that a few individuals were able to detect a little more than the others. The larger community respected and trusted these individuals to guide them in areas where the herd lacked those extra senses. There are tribal communities that still do this to this day. The rest was my opinion about it. Subjective yes. I was born long enough ago that when I was a child and exhibited “symptoms” that were uncommon with the rest, I was tested and moved into a “gifted and talented” class with the other few like myself and our education was highly accelerated and advanced. We were teased by the others much how “elites” (not a bad word btw) are ridiculed in modern adult society today. I’m certain that today id be diagnosed add, adhd, bi-polar, psychotic and schizophrenic. For sure. Probably more. Instead I spent my life performing a highly intricate trade and acquiring rare skills so, my “gifts” have always been highly in demand amongst discerning individuals. They too say I’m really lucky because society usually “medicates” people like me into nothingness. (Society) When those people stopped participating in society altogether I didn’t have anything to do, and back out in society I was labeled with all these “illnesses” and I spent a few years diving into the modern industry of “self help”. I went everywhere from mental homes to “healers” and more. I labeled myself with every single label there is. I owned it. I felt “sick” and I was desperate for “help”. I’ve recently gotten back with my flock and I’m back to being around people who value creativity, ambition, drive, etc… and I now see what happened. I’ve put it into a children’s book about an eagle being raised by penguins. I see how you can disagree with my opinion. We are all unique and interpret things differently. My opinion comes from my interpretation of a specific life experience. Life experience that I felt deeply. Just one perspective on a thing that is not “black and white”. There are many many ways to look at any given thing. We are taking on a platform where the masses have come up with an operating system and based on their understanding of their own invented way… they say people are “sick” and need “help”. I simply shared some historical facts along with my personal experience as just one other way of looking at the same question. Bc in all honesty it is just a question🤷🏻‍♂️…. Cheers

In 2021., my mom was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and my brother (19) was diagnosed with schizophrenia. For the last 1,5 year I've been trying to support him and take care of him. He's been hospitalised for a week now as he stopped taking his medicine 2 months ago, and the situation got out of hand. I feel very guilty for not knowing what to do, for being scared of him at times, for not being the best example and for letting him down. I hope there is hope. And I hope he still gets to experience life. I love you, bro.

My birth mom has paranoid schizophrenia. I was taken away from her and put into foster when I was four. She was so mentally unstable that she unknowingly almost killed me. My adopted mom always portrayed schizophrenia as scary. She frequently implied that all people with schizophrenia are crazy and aren’t capable of accomplishing anything in life. Whenever I hear mental health professionals ask questions that pertain to its symptoms, it scares me, even to this day. My adopted mom frequently told me to keep my mental health in check so I don’t end up like my birth mom. Yet, she was in complete and utter denial that I had mental illness even though I have documented diagnoses for two mental illnesses and one neurological disorder. It’s hard to keep your mental health in check when you have to literally go on your knees and beg your parent to get you professional help. It’s hard to keep your mental health in check when you have go behind their back to get medication that is necessary for you to function even though you’re of age. It’s hard to keep your mental health in check when your parent says that you are choosing to be depressed and live in darkness. It’s hard to keep your mental health in check when you aren’t aware that being anxious, sad, and tired all the time isn’t normal. Words can’t describe how nice it is to be able to see an unstigmatized perspective about what having paranoid schizophrenia is like. My perspective on this mental illness is forever changed. I’m glad that she is able to get the professional help she needs and has people who genuinely support her instead of dehumanizing her because of her mental health struggles. I hope that she will be able to live the best life possible with the people she loves the most.

Trust me, you are not alone in this. I'm in a similar situation, except I didn't leave my mother until I was sixteen because I have siblings to protect. I now live with my father who doesn't take me seriously. Even if he did, the insurance won't cover medication or therapy. I don't know how old you are, but if you can keep your grades up in high school, you can escape to university for a while. They have temporary counseling services for when you're in crisis. It's not much, but it's better than being stuck in a home with a parent who doesn't take your condition seriously. I'm rooting for you. 💪

Everything went back to normal after a while as it was induced by the intervention. I remember like living in Alice in Wonderland, just very dark and scary. I remember thinking that my real sickness was hidden from me by my family and I started developing hallucinations were I could see stains and problems on my skin. I am glad it is over it was hell.

And did they know right away?

Listen, to those hearing voices in their heads, like me, you are not crazy. Unless you suffered a horrible head injury in the past, or you binge on meth or LSD regularly there's nothing wrong with you medically. Don't waste your money on endless therapy and medicine. The medicines only make you calm, often sleepy. But they are not permanent cures. So I did my own research and found the root cause of the problem. Like me, you belong to the unique 10 % of the worlds population that can hear and/or see spirits and entities. Yes, they are real and communicate with us regularly. They speak on a certain wavelength or channel that only we can hear/see. The spirits belong to three basic groups - angels & demons, spirits of dead people, and nature spirits or elementals (dwarves, fairies etc). I have already dealt with this sickness for the last 22+ years of my life, 18 of them - medicine free. I am OK now. Of course, not all schizo-episodes are caused by troubling spirits, but most of them are. Spirits talk to us telepathically (mind to mind/or inner voice) and directly(outside voice) or by using mediums/other people. They can distort speech to give it another meaning. For example, a friend is talking pleasantly to you but instead you hear curses and mockery. That way you become angry with him/her. Sometimes you think you can read other peoples thoughts when in fact the spirits are just creating an illusion. This is where your paranoia / persecution complex sets in. The bad spirits want to make you paranoid, to be isolated socially. They also want to harm you and others physically and verbally. How do the spirits enter our world ? Normal people are protected by an invisible force-field or an "aura". When you have a sinful lifestyle/vice, or are a victim of sexual abuse, bullying, or with unresolved anger, bitterness/sorrow, rejection, or suffer great financial loss, death of a loved one, or loss of faith etc, that aura is affected/broken. Our third eye/ ear is often activated after a traumatic event. When that happens the spirits can get to us. We usually start hearing voices, seeing visions/illusions, imagining things etc. You can also pick up troubled spirits from hospitals, asylums, morgues, haunted houses, dungeons etc - places of great misery & suffering or death. Like people, there are good and bad spirits. The bad spirits purpose is to isolate you socially and cause depression. My experience (90%) were mostly bad. Like magicians, the spirits can create all kinds of visual and/or auditory illusions- like breaking glass, slamming doors, dragging chains, seeing shadows, pounding walls, crying babies, angels appearing, missing small items etc. The spirits can imitate your parents or friends voices. They can even speak through animals. On the other hand, the good spirits only intervene when things are life threatening or when you're about to commit a deadly sin. They also give ideas and inspiration for projects and investments. Some of the good spirits are our own dead relatives or loved ones. You must test the spirits if they are good or bad. Some bad spirits can also pretend to be good at first. Most doctors know only the physical/medical aspect of our condition. They ignore the spiritual realm. So they come up with all sorts of theories about our fucked up brains and bodies, or our past shame/guilt or unconscious desires etc. That we are suffering from a chemical imbalance etc. They can't cure you permanently because they really don't know what is happening and they refuse to accept the idea of outside force or spirit activity. Its like the blind leading another blind. But, don't go to mediums and channelers, they will only bilk you for money. Go instead to a priest or pastor who will help. But beware, a few of the bad spirits will fight back and may even return later.

Like it or not they exists. I've had more than 20 years of this experience so I studied /researched them. I've been meds free for the last 15 years now. You can get schizophrenia from various reasons like a serious head injury, use of illegal drugs, practice of black magic, or by experiencing traumatic events like rape, bullying, deadly accident or near-death experience If the problem is spiritual, the solution is also spiritual ! Get close to GOD. I also found out listening to Worship Praise Songs (via earphones) helps block the voices, even drives them away ! BTW this is NOT a substitute for NOT taking your meds. Take them if you need them. Good luck and Stay Safe.

my mother was a paranoid schizophrenic. She would give me half a dollar so when i came back she could verify who i was, by matching up serial numbers. she would think that if we took her somewhere and then brought her back home, that it was a DUPLICATE of her apartment and that "people" were watching here. This was caused by drugs and my father, and genetic tendencies all mixed together. My father was a piece of shit. So he tells me one day that schizophrenia is hereditary and that i'll probably get it. A doctor told him this. So now when you get intuition you start to wonder................am I going crazy? But this is how my father dealt with people he saw lesser then himself in order to keep them in his sphere of control. Always create doubt about everything but him. it did this sorta alan watts thing to me. Worrying about worrying because worrying is known to lead to serious health issues. Now make someone paranoid about being paranoid, then making them paranoid about themselves when there is no reason either in reality or clinically to be paranoid.

Stay strong. There are many things that can cause illness, if anything you could just have anxiety. You got this. Even with bad anxiety I thought I was going “insane”. I thought I needed to go to a hospital and sometimes I’d feel like I’d see something out the corner of my eye. I personally wouldn’t have been surprised if I had schizophrenia because of how reckless I felt. Don’t worry. Trauma even from someone’s words is a huge thing. In the end these experiences will only make you stronger btw.

My daughter has schizophrenia and she absolutely refuses to stay on her medication. Every time she goes off, she ends up in a hospital. She just got out of one after a 12 day stay and still refuses to stay on a regimen. We are so worried about her. I'm so very glad that you have a strong support system, know that your medications help you and are willing to take them.

It takes a really really strong person to not be subjected to medicine I don’t recommend it. I’m not schitso BUT I have adhd , bipolar disorder and BDE (borderline personality disorder and I don’t take meds except my adhd medications. I don’t take my meds because I feel like it makes things worse imo but I support medication. I’ve found other ways of fighting these disabilities by prayer and meditation and trying to be healthy (eating wise )and working out. I can’t lie there are tough days where I feel hopeless and it’s a constant battle of fighting yourself.

Like it or not they exists.

When you have a sinful lifestyle/vice, or are a victim of sexual abuse, bullying, with unresolved anger, bitterness/sorrow, rejection, or great financial loss, death of a loved one, loss of faith etc, that aura is affected/broken.

@@nba7776 in my experience, once I was able to transcend this idea of “good” and “bad”, it took on a whole new dimension. I enjoy my gift to the fullest. “Good” and “bad” are concepts developed by the same society that says you are sick while they are blind. The only way to really embrace the gift is to try release all the preconceived notions installed in us during our conditioning. All of them.

I have a close family member who is profoundly dear to me and has been completely disabled by this condition since young adulthood. She is a gentle soul who is immensely deserving of love and respect, yet she's struggled socially for years both due to paranoia and public misperceptions of her condition. I admire anyone who has a stigmatized diagnosis that chooses be open enough to help educate others and challenge undeserved stereotypes. Much respect to this woman.

Hi. First off, I think it's great that you are sharing your story and bringing attention to this battle that people fight. My brother struggles with the same thing, however his is slightly different. I read through many of the comments and I have yet to see one that mentioned anything about prayer. I just want you to know that I will say some prayers for you to help this battle. I truly believe in the power of prayer and I believe there are several stories in the bible that highlight mental health issues that are still happening today. I know God can help heal this. In Jesus name! PS I'm not trying to take away anything or act as if mental health issues are not real. They are very real and many Christians fight this fight, but God can help.
