I knew a guy in college who had a credit card from his parents for emergencies. He racked up 2000 in debt buying stuff for eve online. When his parents found out he flunked all his classes and spent 2k on a video game they stopped paying for his college and he was gone the next term. Talk about ruining your life.

Spending cash like that on Eve is like going into a hardware store and buying a whole woodworking shop full of the most expensive high end gear, and thinking that makes you a master cabinetmaker. Then losing a thumb making your first cabinet because you never turned on a saw before. That is what people dropping cash on eve are doing to themselves.

one of the craziest battles in Eve I've heard of was an old one, at that makes it all the better. In the sort of early days of Eve the south of Nulsec was under the control of Red Alliance, a Russian clan, and eventually, many other corporations (this was before coalitions and the big, 1000+ clans) started to see Red Alliance (gonna refer to them as the Reds) as the unfit rulers of the south, so they came together into the Southern Coalition to beat back the Reds. The numbers were too great and eventually got pushed back into 1 starbase, not even system, in CJ6MT. Now most believed that this was it for the Reds, 400 fully kit'd ships vs 70. Against all odds, Red Alliance was able to crush the Southern Coalition.

fun fact about the bloodbath battle. the severs in eve shut down once every 24 hours for about 10-20 minutes or so, and the reason that battle only lasted 21 hours was because the servers were shutting down by the time they got near the end of the battle, and the devs were actually considering postponing the server shutdown to let the battle finish but ultimately didn't because it was pretty much over by that time. and having semi-good memories of the battle myself, I think the time dilation was pretty rough, where you could essentially press a button and it would take just under an hour for it to finish (time dilation is the game's function that, when there is a heavy load on any given solar system *iirc* it basically slows the time there to not overwhelm the server, it makes gameplay really slow but it will not crash)

Except it is to the country that hosts them. They aren't likely going to pay taxes and the money they earn doesn't really grow the nation as the more money they earn, the less worth their nations currency becomes as it isn't actually backed up by a product. It's basically no different from printing money in the nation where they reside. Eventually their money becomes worthless where they live and they leave the country for someplace else. Let's assume these people move to a rich country... Well, now they can no longer sustain themselves because the money they made from gold farming is peanuts compared to a wealthier country. So they would just hop into another poor country and destroy that too. It's like the old hommage "give a man a fish and he's fed for a day, teach a man to fish and he's fed for a lifetime". Letting people gold farm in virtual games is like giving them a fish each day. They aren't productive ever and as such a burden on their society. A parasite on the world.

When i played eve i bought plex with ISK and i could sustain that with normal play. It's almost the same thing as gold farming really, i played the game for free so someone else could buy my ISK with play time. (real money) However, that's alright for CCP because the real money goes to their pockets. Double standards if you ask me. But gold farming is bad regardless.

The main difference is that through this system less people in poorer countries see gold farming as a viable replacement for an actual job. If someone is “gold farming” in their free time in order to access in game stuff, that is just progressing in the game and it isn’t a viable job replacement. If enough people in these poorer countries did gold farming as a replacement for an actual job it would continue to collapse their already failing economy due to the lack of manpower performing jobs useful outside of a video game whose popularity could die at any point (gold farming as a job is unstable).
