How old is your Jaguar really? and Din but not as we know it. Secrets of the XK8 ep 16

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this episode of secrets of the Jaguar XK8 XKR, John shares a novel and geeky way of dating your cars plastic components and therefore your car. Also did you know that the dimensions of the Jaguar (Alpine) audio head unit are single DIN at the back but unique at the front?
This episode does start with a warning that all XK8 and XKR owners should regularly operate the manual boot release mechanism in order to avoid serious issues later if the lock mechanism or Valet button fail

Great series! Learning new nearly every episode, and i have owned my cat for 7 years! Looked at my plastic fuse cover and I have 2 round dials, one for month and one for year. My reg docs say March 03 as date of manufacture, but the dials read Sept 02. So it was 6 months somewhere loitering with intent!

The date markings on those grids were the production dates for the mouldings for batch traceability purposes not the tool maintenance dates. Mould tools with grain or sparked finishes often had to be acid washed at the end of the production run as the gloss level would rise and the parts would become more and more glossy. This would often be part of the routine maintenance for the tools. So if your car had Teal interior trim (which is quite rare) those mouldings could have been in stock both at the supplier and Jaguar for months. This would be in addition to the car being stored once complete. So these dates are only a guide to a car's age.

Thanks for the extra info Harvey. Its true that all we can guarantee is, that the parts are not older than that date but its a good guide and when you add it to the other dated components it starts to build up a picture. Also you can spot the repair and replacement parts that have date marks after your cars registration. Sounds like you may have some 'Insider Intel' there Harvey? or at least intel from a supplier point of view. I would not expect to hear the phrase 'A sparked finish' very much outside of an injection moulding facility. 🤔IAC? Faurecia?

If you have one, treasure it!. If you want one just go for a 4.2. Harder ride due to 20" low profiles, but it's a tourer, not cruiser!.. You'll never be disappointed… Mike Allen. Southport. U.K.

Hello John. I am having a very strange issue with my dash lights. The day time lights work fine, however the night time dash light do not light up. If I have the key Off, the night time lights work, but as soon as I turn the key on, they go out. Have you ever heard of this? All the exterior lights are working. Is there maybe a modular or relay I am not finding? ANY help would be Very much appreciated.

Hello John, ‘have been following your episodes as they pop up at random on utube. I drive a SaaB 93, 2008 but so impressed with the XK that I am in the process of getting a xkr coupe, 2004. Is there a way to ascertain that the chain tensioners are in metal as the plastic ones were being replaced but not year-specific.

Hi Peter Engine numbers after 010813000 were equipped with the third generation or so called metal tensioners. This equates to all engines produced after the 13th of August 2001

Andy Kirwan The irony of the xk8 was despite being a high end car range. It had only one engine and one gearbox. The majority of owners wanted wooden dashes and pale interiors. It was a very easy car to batch produce lower spec stock for dealers at very low risk.

Another great video thanks John. Regarding aftermarket head units and wiring, I'm assuming steering wheel controls can be kept with the correct setup. I have a premium system in my car but the cd changer is a nightmare, tried the jag forums repair to no avail (sometimes). It works sometimes when I jemmy the cd cassette but soon get the dreaded E-01 error. The head unit is great so radio is fine of course but I have a DIN unit that has the ability to play directly off USBs (mechless I believe they are called) so am thinking of doing an install of it sometime but at the same time I really don't want to lose my original fascia type clean look of the oem setup. Nice locale by the way!

Trevor Heath on the amplified systems you probably won’t find speaker wires behind the head unit.

Hi Andy Hi Trevor There are folk out there who can supply anything you want. One example is Incartec. See this link below. I will be making a purchase from them soon. incartec.co.uk/Jaguar/XK8-Convertible/Stereo-Upgrade-Single-Din/Other-Single-Din/141

Hello again John. I have a dumb question not related to your video. Are All the switches supposed to be Illuminated? Windows, cruse, lights, radio, ect? I would like a Professional opinion before I start removing the steering wheel.

Hi yes Almost everything does (or did!) light up. The only thing I can’t vouch for is the steering wheel controls. I will check next time I’m sat in it.

Thank you John. I love my 2001 XKR. I have always thought, for such a beautiful car with all the features, why nothing lights up. It wasn't until I saw one of your videos that the window controls actually Do light up. Also the shift indicator, turn/lights?
