How Old is Your Hearing? - Interactive Test for Your Ears

Hey audiophiles, how good is your hearing? As we age, our ability to hear high frequencies decreases. Let me know in the comments if your age and score match!
Here is how to calculate the average maximum frequency you should be able to hear based on your age. Take your age, multiply it by 166, then subtract that from 20925.
I've uploaded the video using Linear PCM audio, but KZread's compression algorithm changes the highest frequencies above 18khz. If you want a more accurate test, take a look at this site: onlinetonegenerator.com/hearin...

    I wear hearing aids. I’m 41 years old with severe “reversed sloped hearing loss,” which is rare and means I’ve either lost the ability to hear lower pitches, or have never been able to. I was told my high pitch hearing is actually fine. I wasn’t diagnosed until two years ago. Putting those hearing aids on for the first time was LIFE CHANGING! …..but according to THIS test, my left ear (which has visible scarring from childhood ear infections) is 33 years old, and my right ear is 30. I’m 41, so I’ll take that, and it verifies what my audiologist has found on my hearing tests. Now I’m wondering if, as I age and have age-related high pitch-hearing loss, if they’ll be able to treat both conditions. ???

I did rely on Bluetooth because my smartphone has no jack and I don't currently own wireless headphones. Pretty cool. I wish I could perceive like a toddler, but hey, below half my age has worked just fine. Peace. I suggest listening to jazz fusion such as Weather Report and rock blended with jazz such as Steely Dan. For lyrics, seek XTC and Joni Mitchell. For currently catchy indie, try the Beths. I can recall being bothered by video monitors in the studio back in the old days, because the 15750 Hz sweep frequency would be so loud in the room. I've never had a professional audiometry. The highest frequency I seem to be able to hear now with good headphones is around 11,500 Hz. I'm not thrilled to have lost so much, as I'm still mixing records, but c'est la vie, I guess. (At least I don't seem to be overbrightening my mixes yet!) I've tried different audio compression from AAC, to PCM, to OPUS (KZread's native compression algorithm.) PCM seemed to do the best. The others had lots of artifacts. I think the reason is that these are sine waves and maybe their algorithm looks at the high frequency sweeps as something that is "useless" data whereas if it's something on a music track, the algorithm might keep it in there.

  • @speakerpat

    @speakerpat

But some KZread videos won't even be processed above 480p whilst being uploaded at 4k so I guess Google just isn't able to have a stable platform anymore. I think this is pretty interesting considering some music producers use KZread as a main platform to share their music. Also what I totally forgot to mention, the bluetooth artifacts are pretty funny if you hear them for the first time.

    I am 39 and my left ear hits at 22, while my right ear at 18! I've done this test before at a hospital when I was actually 18 and the doctor thought I was joking (I could hear the sound almost from the beginning )but I DO hear these sounds clearly. I can hear the "sound" of a TV muted, even in another room and sometimes on another floor! It's strange, I know, I guess that's how I was born, I am used to it...

    I'm 25 and so are my ears apparently! Thank you for this! I am a long time sufferer of tinnitus but I'm glad it hasn't reduced my hearing in any major way! Got it as a kid when I pressed on a foam earplug too much which made it to scrunch up and not protect my ear properly at a military airshow.

    @@anthonyk1020 It is as far as I know perfectly fine to sleep with earplugs! My partner has been doing it for years and haven't suffered any negative effects from it! What gave me tinnitus was the fact that I wore earplugs but also decided to put my fingers into my ears (I was a dumb kid lol) to really make sure that my hearing wasn't damaged. What ended up happening instead was that me pressing on the foam earplugs caused them to crumple up in my ear and since they were not fully expanded in there, they couln't properly protect from any outside noise and I ended up getting tinnitus. Sorry if this wasn't clear based on my previous comment!

    I do hear a couple soft clicks before hearing anything. I wonder if it's something the CODEC is doing or if it's in my ear. I guess you could do your own sweeps and see if if you isolate a frequency that messes with your ear.

    Heard a click at 31 and then I heard the sound. It is really a click though, I think it is more like a high pitched squawk? Hard characterizing sound. I thought it was from my headphones, because I thought they limited the higher frequencies or something. But if this test is correct I hear frequencies well below my age.

    It's your headphones. I've tested this test with multiple headphones. And I'm a producer and mix engineer... So, The usual consumer grade headphones does give a click (Can't understand why). But the headphones that are made specifically for producers and engineers, does not give a click (Still can't understand why). The thing is My consumer grade headphones are rated with the frequency response of 20hz-20khz And My 2 Specifically made for producer headphones are rated with 20hz-20khz and the other one with 20-hz22khz (That's absolutely unnecessary as we can't hear above 20khz But okay...) One more interesting thing that I noticed is when I use my casual consumer grade headphones, For me the frequency was right around 17,800 But when I tested it with studio headphones, It was around 18,350 for both my ears. And not to forget my age, It's 22... I wonder if that's the reason I enjoy modern music more than most of my friends... 🤔🤔

    My age is 39, and I am not terribly surprised by my results. It confirms my "cookie-bite" hearing loss. I start hearing sound around around 12 to 15 depending on ear, then lose sound around 25 to 30 years old, and don't pick up the higher frequencies until 60 to 65 years old. I guess I need to get back into the audiologist again and have them run a professional test.
