How Offshore Oilrigs Work, Float, and Extract Oil
Ғылым және технология
Offshore drilling is the process of extracting petroleum from reserves located beneath the Earth's oceans instead of reserves located on the mainland. Offshore oil rigs have developed greatly over the past years, and have become gigantic structures that house hundreds of people at a time.

I wasn't even aware we actually use floating platforms. All these years I was picturing these massive kilometers long structures that must be built to connect to the ocean floor and hold these rigs... Now I feel stupid. But also smarter. Which feels weird.

Oh, deep water drilling is done in way too deep waters for that. Some deep water drilling is so deep that the rigs aren't even anchored to the bottom. They use dynamic positioning (thrusters on the hull) to maintain their position over the wellhead.

I am Cuban, 57 years old, I live in USA since 1986, spent 23 years in the shipbuilding and oil industry, 7 them working in several oil facilities owned by BP at the north sea, I was member a maintenance crew of 17 guys, welders, fitters, pipe fitters, crane operator, electricians and helpers, I was a lead welder, many times we spent up to 60 days working on those oil platforms, north sea is a hell of cold environment, then back on dry land mostly here in North Dakota I was involved in the work of lying down oil pipelines and also here was where I had the ugliest drama bullshit with bitches in my entire life, the fucking rig pig queens.

@@mglenadel you just blew my mind. I'm a driller (rock drilling, not oil) and to keep a rig this massive over top of a hole that small in such treacherous waters is wild.

One thing they don’t show is my side of the job. I work on a supply boat for oil rigs. We bring personnel and materials/equipment out to the rigs, and there are thousands of us boat across the world. If not for us the rigs wouldn’t be able to operate. We bring everything from people to fresh water, food to cement. It’s an entirely different side of the job.

Considering it takes approximately it takes 5-7 years to design, plan build, transport, install, hook up lines, install flowlined, drilling wells etc. And nothing less than 5 billion money investment before the first drop of sales money return many years later.

Ingenious how humans discovered and engineered this phenomenon
As a non technical person I used to wonder how rigs assembled and worked ….. you have explained marvellously in simple terms 👍
The engineering behind this is insane.
Whoever imagined such a structure with such sheer scale of engineering and whoever built it deserve more praise and recognition than physicists get!

Yayyyy. It's not like even the most remote locations on Earth are contaminated with plastics, and PFAs or anything. Definitely not raining down into our crop, and water supply. Definitely we're all not ingesting a credit cards worth of plastic weekly; and definitely none of this is contributing to the cancer and heart disease epidemic, the 2 leading causes of death in the world

Humans are insanely creative. I have never imagined this type of construction. In order to create this people spent millions of years of knowledge and expreience.
Very interesting! I have always wanted to understand exactly how oil rigs work. Thank you for this detailed info! 👍🏾
Thank you for explanation. I could have never imagined how complicated is underwater oil extraction and its transportation to the land.
I learned about oil rigs many years ago but the books never gave much information about how the oil makes it to shore. It's very interesting to learn about all of the established underwater pipelines!
Visually pleasing and clearly narrated explanations - perfect combination! Thank you so much for creating and sharing!!
Fantastic video, great work and thank you for the lesson.
I really like the detail you get from technical animations such as this. A massive help to understanding how technology works.

I'm not so sure about that. If the steel pantoons are completely flooded, that huge steel structure would sink. In the animations, there is nothing with a lower density that water beneath the waterline. It can't work like that. That's a misleading graphic.

@gehtdianschasau8372 fair enough, I understand that some technical details may be left out, but it is a very useful tool for understanding basics.

Finally a clear video on how this is done. Thank you!
I love how simple and clear the explanations are! well done👍🏾 and by the way, these show how important oil/ gas as irreplacable natural resources, but remember that one day fresh water will be the ‘oil’ 😉

Nicely done. Simple, straightforward explanations for the non engineering types 😊.
Marvelous video, I watched it just for the presentation about oil I need to do for tomorrow, but I got to know so much more interesting information. I was always fascinated by huge engineering projects and oil platforms are one of my favourite things to look at.
