I managed to do it in 20 minutes. However, I do have to say, while I don't care for the time, it did make me genuinely feel like part of the world. Instead of sitting above it like a god, you have to go in and do it yourself.

I spent a day on that. (And managed to fall trough the map during the process forcing me to start the game over) Ended up making a model out of paper to save myself from having to check everything in game. After that it took me less than 5 minutes....

The ending has been written. I loved Obduction. I finally got a computer capable of running it in December 2020. I whiled away many lock-down hours playing it. The thing that I disliked was not being able to explore the mended world.

I was disappointed about the mended world being inaccessible. I hit the down elevator button so I could go out in the newly made world and when nothing happened I said a few choice words.

@@singledad1313 true, the game is so focused on the puzzles themselves that the satisfaction of the rewards of solving the puzzles is pretty much all you get. The small fmv clips of the characters are way to limited, and their dialogues arent very natural. It seems like they are suppose to be highly intelligent people, aka everyone is an engineer or a scientist (even though its suppose to be a small mining village, so it kind of falls flat for me. I dont care about the characters what so ever, why would I? The lives being spared of course makes sense.

I want to help clarify all this, just so that no one's left confused. MYST's story involved an entire family drifting apart after the collapse of a civilization. Essentially, a community "torn apart" Obduction's story, on the other hand, involved four species, once living in peace, brought back together. A community melded back together. MYST was about ruined civilizations, Obduction was about reborn civilizations. I hope things are less obscure now.

I think it's a very beautiful game with an interesting concept, but is very clunky mechanically, and relies far too heavily on written exposition. I couldn't help all the way through thinking how with every unnecessarily long, or tedious, or obscure puzzle how the developers must have thought they were being too clever by half. Any puzzle game that requires an option to activate sprites that directs one around the map probably should've gone back to the drawing board for some radical simplification. Although it may be an unfair comparison, compare 'Obduction' to 'The Witness'; One can barely complete 'Obduction' without the game hand-holding, or providing character direction, whereas 'The Witness' requires zero exposition, linear zone progression, or even a tutorial. This is made possible by Blow's commitment to precise and succint simplicity, designing and redesigning over and over again to pare back as much as possible. Take, for example, the Villeins base four counting system represented by a node pattern. This is explained once and exactly once on an easily overlooked piece of paper at the gas station. Different base counting systems are not something even advanced players will necessarily be familiar with, particularly ones that aren't represented numerically. Most people will first have to go away and research what a different base system is and how to use it before they can even work out how it translates to the node symbols. Any game that requires the player to do external homework is not well designed in the sense that it is not well contained. Most players I've watched doing let's plays of 'Obduction' have simply brute forced the Villein panel solutions with either mistaken ideas or no idea of how or why their solutions worked. Also, the various worlds are packed with dead ends purely for stylistic effect that have no impact on gameplay. Whether a design choice, or deliberate red herrings, they make the game seem confused as to its own layout. The Villein world, for example, has a very distinct trail of bridges and buildings through it, but is peppered with useless dead ends that merely occupy rendering and graphic capabilities instead of advancing or improving the puzzles. Puzzles that are complex are not necessarily better than puzzles that are simple. This is what we learn from the Principle of Parsimony. I think Cyan forgot that axiom somewhere along the way, sadly, and it shows in the labyrinthine wanderings of a game that should be relatively straightforward.

Helpful review. I've actually played the game several times, but felt like I didn't have the races and planets straight. With a name like Vilein you'd think they were the bad guys. One thing I never knew until you mentioned it, I had no idea there was a warning about C.W.”s battery. Where does Farley refer to that?

Too many swap machines. The exciting parts of the game happened too quickly. One of my favorite parts was seeing the red rocks on the opposite side of the river - you didn't realize they were red from the scrap yard track vantage point, thereby not knowing they needed to be blown up. But the swapping - my goodness - simply too much time consuming - the maze was a cool puzzle, but it was too tedious.

I must have missed mondo lore in my playthrough, because I didn't understand the ending at all. I didn't trust C.W., and there was journal (someone else's) referring to C.W.'s plans almost like the first nuclear detonation -- "God help me for what I've created" kind of thing. So I disconnected the battery, and got the good ending. "Farley was right!" said C.W. What? Right about what? Where was C.W.'s plan ever explained, and where were Farley's objections noted? Loved those Myst books when I was a kid, btw.

Inverse of Myst? What do you mean by that? You don't answer your title question in your video, most of it is just sumarizing the game and perhaps explaining how the "make it home" idea is clever. Please be more precise.

Rivenworld - Riven was the result of Cyan immediately following a huge moneymaking hit. Riven had a $10 million budget vs. $1.4 million crowdfunded on Obduction, which in effect meant a larger team of people worked on Riven and they had much more time schedule-wise to do so. And that lengthy dev cycle in the end, translated to Riven being not only well thought through, but holding an insane amount of detailing that made it feel more real. That degree of credibilty isn't quite present in Obduction. They seemed to be cutting corners and adjusting the scope of Obduction on the fly in some ways, as you get the sense they wanted to do more but were running out of cash and had to pare a lot of the planned design back. And that makes Obduction feel a little bit... disjointed... with an inconsistent difficulty curve.
