Had a brown stage moment today. Going up a hill around a turn, there was a traffic cone in the road. I was so focused on looking into my mirror to make sure none of my crew hit the cone, that I didn’t realize I was still turning. I was headed straight into the ditch along the shoulder. Last second I tried to turn away which made me not go fully into the ditch, but I was off the asphalt riding on the incredibly bumpy, grassy, and steep shoulder. At this point if I tried to go left, I would low side against the road I was supposed to be on. I kept it steady and progressively braked until I stopped and managed not to drop the bike. I wanted to share because it’s a huge learning experience for me and also I kept hearing your voice telling me to apply progressive braking 😂. Love the videos

If you ride up on the right side of a car you have no reason to get upset when they don't see you and change lanes. Highway off ramp or merge you should even expect it. Passing on the right is the biggest blind spot, people just don't expect you to be there.

You have to aim for a bar (usually made of wood or cement) and balance yourself over it, basically. If your bike has a narrow tire, you could get caught in it.

A lesson re-learned about city riding... Just missed getting taken-out by a cager running a red light on Memorial Day evening. Was just finishing up a beautiful 180-mile ride with a buddy (me - '22 Duc MTS V4 PP, him - '22 BMW S1000XR). Coming back into town, we had to ascend a hill on a 2-lane road which went under the interstate, and stopped at a 4-way light-controlled intersection at the top of the hill. We were 1st in-line. When the light turned green, I was (fortunately) having a discussion on our Cardos about my low fuel light and how much difference my Ducati's mileage is vs the BMW'ers. The discussion ended about 3 Mississippi's after we got the green, and before I engaged the clutch, I heard this increasing roar of tire noise (the pavement is typical stone aggregate asphalt/concrete) and Zoooooooooooom - here goes a minivan cager through the intersection, from our left to right. The speed limit is 35 on that road, and this cager was doing at least 45. As for sightlines, that intersection has tall trees on corner, so you can only see the 1st couple of vehicles when they are stopped, even when 1st in line. Stay safe and vigilant out there.

I watch your videos as some sort of "my routine drill instruction but off bike" 🙂. When SHTF i hopefully can responde accordingly :). For real life....hmm best was driving a 50cc moped for 60k km till i was completly pissed off by the police to finally get a "real" licence and "real" motorbike. Even you cant imagine, but driving a to 45kmh restrcited but otherwise fully sized motorbike, is the most dangerous thing you can do on public roads today - at least here in middle europe where this 50cc bikes are very common but making them roadsave is illegal cause this means deristricting them so you can actually go with the flow of traffic.

@@GaryM-ft7pw With modern 50cc 2Strokes you can make tours like with big cc bikes, just takes more time where you can enjoy the nature around you instead of just blasting by and instead of valve check you just change piston every 20k km. Main problem is power and speed restriction by law. But for some reason, goverments still hold on to this 100 year old law cause its a good moneymaker for them and they just give a damn about "cause of safety" as they would already know huge speed difference is a real safety issue. With modern 50cc fully restricted bikes you have slower accerleration then a bum on his mountainbike and every "hill" with more then 5 degrees elevation is endboss gg get off and push..

Is it just me or do a lot of bikers in these videos just don't have any sense of what other might or might not see? I mean we talk a lot about line of sight from the bikers perspective, but why do so many fail to realize that "if you can't see them, they can't see you." That means you not only have to think about what you can not see, but also what other can not see. You might have spotted a car through a bush but that doesn't mean a car would have spot you as a motorcycle through that same bush. When nearing a intersection without traffic lights, I always slow down, make sure the line of sight is good and I can see what is coming. If I can't see I slow down more. Int he case of the biker on 14:25, I'm sorry but he should have known better then to just keep driving like that. The van was easy to spot, the speed was to high to assume he would stop, and thus he should have slowed down. Especially as he could not see what the van would do at the intersection.

I don't agree with the success metric btw Dan. If we can walk away from it, doesn't mean that is how you should have handled it. like the guy at 15:30 clip, Sorry but he should have backed off, don't overtake on the right of you don't know what the person is going to do. He drove on what looks like a line that will turn into an offramp on onramp to another highway. The car was pretty late in turning in and he was in the cars blindspot for sure. So knowing that the car was already late, you can assume he would have less attention to what is around him as he has to make quick decisions. This makes the car unpredictable and you should back off from it. Also accept that everybody can be late for an offramp sometime and that you might not see everyone, even you as the biker will have those moments. So just gave them space and nothing happens. Fighting for space is NEVER the option unless you have no other place to go. Success is when the challenge is overcome and no further unsafe situations have occured. The car moving became an unsafe situation, the biker speeding up made it even more unsafe. The fact that he drove away is pure luck at this point.
