Yeah, my right pinkie looks like tea time when I play.. But that's due to the fact that I broke a tarsal bone a few years back and it doesn't bend right anymore, it tucks under the ring finger by a good 10+ degrees. I can make it fit in line with the others, but man that hurts after just a few doubles.

Here's the thing if you know you're gripping the stick too tightly try to hold it loose in your hand and try to let it hit once on the drum or practice pad. Try to use only your back three fingers and if you are doing that correctly then you shouldn't be moving a whole lot. The way to really break that habbit is to try to do controlled doubles on each hand. You shouldn't be forcing the stick to fall, but it shouldn't be loose and uneven either. When you can control it you'll notice your fingers will feel comfortable and will be able to keep time doing multiple strokes. Keep practicing this and I hope I helped you out 😁😁😁😁🥁🥁🥁🥁

You have control with marvelous technique. I watched a video of Tony Williams and he discussed stick control. Rabbit hole. So since then I have been trying to do everything with this thought. It is like trying to relearn something. It's a delicate balance. Some of it is how you tension your snare to get that rebound?

I have been trying to learn the middle finger as fulcrum, thumb toward bottom, and 'catch' rebound with last two fingers. Very hard for me with my weak hand. I can play much better with forefinger as fulcrum, thumb toward bottom and 'catch' with ring finger. Is this OK? or do I need to suck it up and practice the preferred method. Thanks. Love the channel man, you have given me a road map to getting serious about drumming.

Good lesson Stephen as are all your videos. One thing bothers me here and that's how high your sitting in relation to the snare drum. I was taught to sit in relation to the snare drum so that my arms create an L shape when playing that drum. Also having the snare drum so low between your legs makes rim shots very difficult to play.

When playing accents, how do you suppress the rebound with the lighter grip described at 4:40? Like in the case where there's a note to be played by the same hand shortly after the accent (e.g. when playing quick single stroke 16th-note rolls w/ accents).

Can I ask your thoughts on choosing to use your middle finger as your fulcrum point? I’m new to drumming (I play other instruments) but it looks like many professional percussionists and players who mainly use a french style grip use their middle finger as the fulcrum point. Any chance you could give your thoughts in a video or down here?

I've never heard of using the middle finger as the fulcrum in French grip - at least, not French timpani grip with the elbows pointed out to the sides. As far as I know, the index finger and thumb form the fulcrum, and the middle finger controls the mallets. However, I didn't study a lot of timpani. With German grip, Murray Spivack used to teach that the middle finger was the fulcrum. I didn't get to study with Spivack myself, but I studied with three different guys who did. I would never say Spivack's way is the only way, but considering all the heavy players who studied with Spivack, I'd say there's merit in that idea.

I mean that's the only thing that could really cause your stick to slide unless your fingers are doing something funky and pulling or pushing the stick when you play. That sometimes happens to me and usually it's from playing real loose. But to fix it don't start gripping the sticks really hard go gradually until it feels like you have control but you arent causing all this tension in your fingers and hand

  • @DDS029

I had this problem after not being able to play for a good while. What I thought was a normal grip was too loose due to inactivity. I put a couple wraps of ½ inch bandage tape around my sticks right wear my fingers would lay against the tape and wouldn't slide past that. I did that for awhile until my natural grip came back. Sort of like training wheels . . .

with regards to the pinky problem, is your pinky in constant contact with the stick? My problem is the fulcrum is there so that when the stick pivots, it naturally goes away from my pinky anyway. It's hard to keep putting my pinky on and off the stick with each stroke. I found my doubles are actually worse when I try to keep them on.

It sounds like you may not be holding it quite tight enough. There is a very happy medium. Also, you may be gripping under the fulcrum. Just a little bit of wrong weight distribution will affect your control way more than you would think.

I guess the French Grip is all the rage now. I use French Grip for reaching and would never use it for doubles, or just about any rudiments. You'll develop forearms that are thin with muscles on the edges of your arm. Eventually, the tendons by your thumb will overheat. Your loose grip will also chafe the inside of your hand. Who taught you to play with that grip?

  • @jc3drums916
    @jc3drums9165 жыл бұрын

I'm not sure what you're getting at when you talk about your pinky pointing outward when using French grip, because it wasn't - it was in a completely different position compared to your German grip example. If the pinky is truly out, there will be tension in the hand. That's the reason for keeping the pinkies in, not because you're supposed to use them when playing doubles...which you can do I suppose, depending on the technique, but it definitely was not how I was taught to play doubles. Push-pull doubles maybe, but not basic rebound doubles.

It's not a technique problem because about 60% of the time, as a result of circumstances I have not been able to identify yet, I will not have that shiny slick residue on my fingers and I can play perfectly comfortably. I have tried thoroughly washing my hands and cleaning the sticks (wiping them with a damp towel), and this residue will come right back. Does anyone know what it might be?

My technique is -kinda- odd I guess. My thumb very loosely rests against the side/underside of my first index finger knuckle, the index finger being loosely extended as the only one on each hand. I actually just hold onto the stick with my pinkie and ring fingers doing a relaxed little cradle around the sticks buttend, then the middle finger slacks a bit more downwards than pinkie/ring but is still high enough to stop the stick from just pointing downwards, and it also holds it up it against the arch that the tip of my thumb/first index knuckle is, which I use for guiding/controlling the vertical movement of the stick. Sounds odd and complicated but it came very naturally when I had to resort to mostly wrist playing when I developed tendonitis. Because my grip is so relaxed and I don't use my fingers, my tendons seemingly like this way a lot more.

I really disagree with everything you are saying, especially your foot technique. Yes everything you say is true in certain situations but makes it impossible to adapt to other situations. Correct and "incorrect" way to do things is really REALLY subjective. If your stuck in your ways and the style of music that you play then yes there is only one way to do things. Correct and incorrect is a form of self validation for people who cant do it any other way.

My guess is that you are talking to beginners correct? I have watched million different videos on how to hold your drumsticks with all due respect days are totally fruitless and they do not apply to all situations or to all drummers. Take a look at some of the old grades Don Brewer Bonham and others. If you're playing jazzy kind of controlled easy music maybe your information is applicable to new drummers. But try to play hard rock and roll where's your techniques and see what you get again with all due respect I would not waste 8 minutes on trying to teach Old Pros how do you hold drumsticks properly. I've been corrected by drummers who really don't have a clue. I played in high school band join the band in the 10th grade I was section leader in the 11th grade. I was talk by my brother about 10 to 12 years of age how to play and how to hold the drumsticks in his instructions were to use the wrist and from that the Reds came easy everything you're talking about dude it's like first riding a bicycle. Once you go down that Hill a couple of times and you scrape your knees you learn how to turn the handlebars and use the brakes easily. I'll give you a c plus on your efforts. Have fun. By the way I'm severely crippled and that's why I say I'm messing around a lot because I'm trying to rehabilitate my body so I can play at least 80% of my potential potential right now I'm only at about 50%. Thank you and message me if you have any feedback
