Surprised there aren't more comments on this; guess it's a bit too niche perhaps. Regardless, thanks VERY much! My having run across this video could not have been more timely as I recently been looking at reviving 3 battery packs that were part of 1200 lumen bike lights sold by Bright Eyes on Amazon. Notwithstanding the issues the first generation of these lights suffered, the latest battery packs (now 'waterproof') seem to be a bit more reliable and with the upgraded lamps, they're totally awesome IMO. Not great if you're too hung up on overall weight but as far as brightness is concerned, it's the bomb. Can be somewhat too directional or focused of a beam at times when not running a diffuser on unfamiliar courses but other than that, it's all good. As you mentioned, there's nothing more off putting than having a sudden black out when in my case, I'm on a training ride at 0-dark-thirty in the AM on a challenging course riding tempo or faster... not good. Being these packs are expensive (from Bright Eyes in my case), I'd been wondering if it's possible to take apart and replace the lithium ion batteries and save myself some money. I've got three of these first-generation battery packs which came with my older Bright Eyes bike light sets, all of which are now 3+ years old and totally not reliable at all. Your well presented description of what can be done at what's needed has given me hope. That battery pack you show along with a set of high quality (18650?) batteries and a charger might just fit the bill. I see the batteries you're displaying here are the Tenergy brand. To your knowledge, are those of higher quality? Also, are you happy with that particular brand or style of charger? Thanks for taking the time to show this!!

Agreed here... Am surprised there are very few comments! Such an excellent introduction to bike lights and the basic electronics inside them. Thank you!

Regarding the charging of lithium batteries, the low 300 milli amps current is what you’d want to charge with. Yes it takes longer but it’s gentle on the batteries and will give them have a longer useable life. Also if you only charge them to 4.0volts (instead of letting chargers max them out at 4.2) it will let you recharge them thousands of times more.

Nice tips, thanks! I guess i'll stick with the lower amperage. I would assume that charging to 4 volts would have an effect on how long the lights would last, as well. Is it noticeable?

@@andrewsmith7367 Just in case you are still looking, search "waterproof 18650 case" on Ebay, you'll see two types of these thingys. One holds 4 batteries and the other one holds 6. There is no brand of them whatsoever but looks solid.

What specs should I be looking for in cells to populate one of these cases? In addition to mAh and 3.7v it looks like there's choices for different amperages from 3.6A to 40A?!

The holder that takes 4 x 18650 should have a all the electronics in the lid to charge the 18650's you just need a wall charger 8.4 volts that plugs in to the same socket as the bike light ?I know it's 2021 now but looks the same as when you made the video?

Have you tried this? The cases I bought say they have over-charge protection of 8.4v built in...

@@tzed2509 Iam now wiser.I dont think there is any protection in the lid against over charge and over discharge so I remove cells to recharge as advised in the video. Its a well made plastic box but it's also easy to put the cells in the wrong way also and short them. Not done it yet but could this cause a cell to vent off?
