Geoff, it seems there was a mix-up with the Monroe shocks you purchased for the rear of the 850. The preferred choice among 850 owners was the foot pump height-adjustable ones, which provided the added benefit of enabling extended conversations as they reached their campsite of choice with the other 850 owners.

This reminds me of the bank holiday weekend it took five of us to change the headlight bulb on my BMW bike. Two of them were bike mechanics. Beer fridge in the garage. 🤷‍♂

I did the exact opposite to my 850 estate, I fitted heavy duty swedish springs and bilstein b6 shocks and fitted some bigger tyres raised it up by about 40mm coz in my opinion they are too low. Drove great afterwards was a much improved drive all around and made the car look more beefy.

I’ve been thinking of raising my XC70 AWD with a 2in lift kit and adding bigger tires but have held off in case it ruined the ride, might have to have another look into it.👍

@@Peelerville ya I took off the adjustable shocks on my xc70 and fitted b4 shocks and lasafour (forgive the incorrect spelling) springs heavy duty. And it sat a bit higher just over an inch I reckon but was a firmer ride and felt better to drive. My xc70 was a mk2. I had it written off by a 17year old girl new driver a few weeks ago lol typical . Still got a brand new set of bilstien b4s front struts in my garage.

@@GeoffBuysCars well a change is as good as a holiday so they say, and it would be a boring world if we all had the same tastein cars etc. I have lowered and lifted all sorts over the years. Not lowering much these days must be getting old ha ha...

in the video, at 3.00 min, you can see how the rear springs are installed incorrectly. the locking sleeves under the springs should be inside the spring, not outside👍🏁☠️☠️☠️

Keep doing the car videos, watching this after a long days work, and just smiling / laughing all the way through.. brilliant.

Love the video's and what you do, but for me these cars look perfect in original spec. Suspension lowering then going from 55's to 50's will lower it further.

They were 50 from factory, not 55. I feel like it's always had the wrong rubber on it.

Wheel alinement? What you'll find is the grip is great on dry roads and absolutely crap in the wet! Ask me how I know! Keep standard springs and fit good(Bilstein) gas dampers.

@@GeoffBuysCars Suspension too stiff and when hits bump stops, no suspension at all. Did this to my Audi80 and trust me understeer on wet corners with high curbs is scary! In the dry I was sliding across the seat.

I’ve recently renewed the shocks and springs on my V70 classic but I’ve kept it standard because of bloody speed bumps and pot holes…on 55’s for the same reason L’s garage reminds me of my late friend’s only much tidier

Those DIY spring compressors used to scare the shit out of me. I now take my towers down the local garage and have them use their wall mounted compressor, for the price of a drink. But I see you use a friend.

Great to see this,I think this is what is most upsetting about the unnecessary ban on petrol and diesel cars,these meets will die out and enthusiasts will lose their hobby/pastime.Sad times..

Munro shocks very good choice of shock. Very common for the top mounts to go rotten might have something to do with the roads🤔. Looks good on the new shocks & springs.👍

Been following your chat show for some months now. I liked the new 'fix it' video with the 850. More please with detailed work on camera. Like Rainman Ray.

Hi Geoff a wile ago I had the Volvo 740 est with the seats in the rear I had that lowered 40 mm all round I had the Monroe gas filled shocks due to rim rot I had 17inch rims with Michelin rubber filled with nitrogen no more tyre pressure fluctuation and no water rotting the rims, I also had vented disks on the front and EBC green stuff pads all round that made her stop. Oh I also had to have a new carb as they were not fuel injected so I had a twin weber and it worked well no starting problems, I later had Custom Chrome Ltd, Nuneaton, Warwickshire build a stainless exhaust fitted at their HQ I will say the motivation was I loved the Cherry Bomb and I thought I would see what they could do and there was no drone on the motorway or anything like that you could hear it on acceleration, then it was quiet enough in the car, I did have the car set up at our local race car tuner as they were a genuine no messing no up sale place and she ran like a dream until I sold her. Now I regret it.

Shocks are really dampers, as they control the oscillations. Shock absorption is dealt with by the springs. I also believe that the manufacturers go to a great deal of effort to optimise suspension settings, but never mind. Enjoy.

Suspension components degrade. Springs control load and ride height mostly.

A man goes into a garage to get an estimate to lower his VOLVO. MMM. The garage man having seen a G.B.C. video jokes about putting Kids in the back. 5 years later he returns to complement the mans cheap solution. YES, but upon getting the kids with the misses I now need to replace the suspension and the humidity has wrecked the headlining!!! Probably the best use for a Volvo Estate on the planet.

Lowering them might make them look nice but it makes the ride more uncomfortable. And in the case of living down country lanes, I daren't lower mine anymore, it'll take the front splitter off completely 😏

err, you have the rear springs on wrong. to be fair they were on wrong to start with. that cup ound pot that the spring is sitting on should be inside the springs clamping it to the seat. the seat has a half moon protrusion to receive the spring and stop it rotating. this is why your rear end is still in the air.

I don't think this really counts as lowering, the springs are so damn high it should be fine.

Hi Geoff great channel. I herd that Ford advertised the 2002 Volvo XC70 with no fatalities that year? Any truth to that, a good friend of mine a true motor head saw the advertisement but can't remember where. I would very much appreciate it if can confirm or deny this? Cheers

What happened to your front numberplate?

I drilled a 6mm hole through my bike trailer to stop water building up and it’s not big enough it keeps blocking up and that just sits around mostly it doesn’t have all the crap of the road splashed up it in the rain as I don’t take it out when it’s wet

I just don't get this lowering craze. It looks like car full of bricks or broken springs. The roads are bumpy enough as it is, why make the ride worse? 😅 Your choice though Enjoy the new ride if you can 👍

Curious what is the legal situation on car mods. Have been told a whole variety from anything to alter from the original type approval is illegal to anything goes as long as acceptable for the MOT. Then of course it depends on the individual on that particular day. Variations in MOT standards are of course another topic.

MOT testers are not that well trained. DVSA pick them from the motor trade so assume they know what they're doing. A lot of it is discretion. They've had no training on loud exhausts for example, even though 8.1 says 'no louder than standard' it's 99% ignored. Then we wonder why they're bringing in noise cameras 🤦🏻
