I don’t know if this is a hot take or not but I think Pixel deserved her own season. Unlike basically all of the ninja, she’s never really been flanderized. She’s been in the show since season 3 and has been on the ninjas team since but the writers barely do anything with her. I wish she had gotten her own season because she deserves one but now focus seasons aren’t a thing anymore so I guess that’s never gonna happen. I hope when she eventually shows back up in dragons rising they do more with her

man seeing zane treated either like a walking "haha he's a robot joke" or as fakeout death fodder really puts into perspective how well Bionicle handled its own tragic icy hero like yeah it was heartbreaking when Matoro died but at least his death was permanent meaning we didn't have to see him die over and over

@@17jacoyne if anything having Matoro die in a way that can't be undone only makes his death all the more tragic as he's gone for good, and I don't see how death being permanent is a bad thing like if you don't like the red star retcon then I agree it cheapens a lot of deaths like Lhikan and I don't think that what Bionicle did with matoro is like how optimus prime dies as he was killed off when his toy was discontinued, the rest of the toa mahri's toys were discontinued too but they still made appearances after 2007, so Matoro dies purely for story reasons not related to merchandise

@@rhyperiorhunter7339 what i meant to say was making a Bionicle movie where we witness the character matoro die would most likely spark a reaction from younger fans the same way many young fans reacted to prime dying in the 1986 transformers movie, i remember being torn aprat just for reading in the comics matoro died! 17 years later and im still angry at greg for that one!

Definitely agree with this. Zane’s character in the early seasons didn’t “work” because he’s a nindroid, it worked because of how cool and well developed he was _despite_ being a nindroid. It’s okay to break a character down to their bare essentials when they’re sidelined (they did that with Lloyd just fine in seasons 12-14, arguably making it one of his best adaptations imo), but the problem is that the root of Zane’s character is that he: -Is self sacrificing -Is sympathetic -Is intelligent albeit awkward It’s pretty simple to simplify a character like that if you know what you’re doing, but the writers kind of just made him act like a robot instead :/ (Although to give credit where credit is due, Quest for Lost Powers handled his character really well imo. Quest for Lost Powers just has a lot of Ws in general)

Correction: Hands of Time also used Zane for comedy and very few other things, so Possession was not a one time thing in WilFilm.

The "We used Zane as a robot to make him act like {PERSONALITY ARCETYPE HERE}" was exclusive to S5 in the wilfilm seasons. What was done in S7 definitely sucked and I should have mentioned it but I wouldn't consider it comparable to S5, 12, 14 and 15 personally.

It would also be nice to get an episode that really dived in to his relationship with pixel as most of the wildbrain episodes were they are together come across like she was just as fed up with the comidic personality bits as Crusty is 😂

I will give credit where credit is due, season 8 was an amazing season for Zane. I loved The Snake Jaguar arc and it ended with an incredible show down between two amazing characters, but instead of continuing with a cool but funny Zane that was titanium on the outside, but human on the inside, we instead got “Return of the Ice Emperor”. I hope Zane and Jay get the Dragons Rising treatment 🤞

You see, Season 8 was good for Zane because it actually handled his characterization well. I mentioned this in another comment, but there’s nothing inherently wrong with simplifying a character down to their core roots when necessary *so long as it’s done properly.* Wildbrain (as well as seasons 5-7) failed not because they simplified Zane into who he is (selfless and intelligent, albeit sometimes awkward and indifferent), they simplified him into just…being a robot. Season 8 wasn’t a “Zane season” by any means, season 9 even less so, but they squeezed in little bits of characterization that in the end, broke him down to his core roots while making it feel natural. He’s still the person who went through all those amazing arcs in season 1, 3, and 4, but now he’s just…not -having an existential crisis- being in the centre of attention. Idk how to describe it better, but it’s pretty much exactly how you humanize a character, because that’s kind of how it works when our lives are a little more mundane. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

Yes, I totally agree with you. Something I love about the Oni Trilogy and Dragons Rising is that they both understand their characters, their personalities, and what they strive for, but also do it in a sense where it feels like the characters have matured from their past experiences unlike seasons 11 - 15.

It was really good, but it kind of fell off a cliff (literally) after that battle. It didn't seem like there was any satisfying conclusion.

I really hope Dragons Rising improves on his character. Season 1 was good for Zane imo, I hope it gets better from here. He's my second favourite Ninja, its really sad to see how he was handled in recent years... Regarding "Return of the Ice Emporor, I heard that Tommy originaly wanted for Zane to have his Ice Emperor Arc continued in Crystalized, but the producers wanted a more funny episode, so the idea was scrapped.. Thats really missed potential. Great analysis.

If there is one thing that Ninjago TikTok is not wrong about, it's that Jay and Zane fell off after Season 10. And it's such a shame because I want to like them again, i really do, but the flanderization of their characters is too much for me to accept them. At least the future of Zane is looking up, I hope I can say the same for Jay.

Poor Zane. I feel so bad for him. In the Pilots he didn’t do much. In Seasons 1 to 4, he was amazing. He received actual character development. In Seasons 5 all that way 10 he didn’t grow at all as a character, instead he was just used as a punching bag and was always getting damaged and destroyed. In Season 11, he became an evil emperor. Which was cool. The Ice Emperor is a fantastic villain, and criminally underrated. This was a good idea, having Zane turn evil would’ve been a great way to give him some character development. Unfortunately this happened in a book and not the show, but at least it happened. Even if it is a few years late. In Season 12 to 14, he once again didn’t receive any character development at all and just did stuff in the background. In Season 15 he finally received some character development. His arc about grief was amazing. And he finally felt like a character again. However, later on in the season, he malfunctions and turns back into the Ice Emperor. Now, I love Crystalized, but I can’t defend this episode. Return of the Ice Emperor is crap. If you ever wanted to see a great villain get character assassinated, then this episode is the one to watch. Fortunately, it isn’t all bad thanks to P.I.X.A.L. She was actually handled well here and this episode set up Compatible, which is a great episode for P.I.X.A.L’s character. So even if I hate Return of the Ice Emperor, it at least has a reason to exist, I just wish it was done better. And then in DR S1, he didn’t do that much, he was just there. But he was great in Wildly Inappropriate. So yeah, this is a good video, and I agree Zane’s character has had a downfall and needs to be improved in the future. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that something good will happen to him soon.🤞

I never liked the plot of him turning off his emotions in crystalized, I think a way better plot would be for Zane to reveal that he never had an emotion switch and was just ignoring his feelings to try to cope with nya's "Death"

I do wonder what part of Crystallized he was actually involved in, because even though the season as a whole is…intriguing (to say the least), there’s a fine line between parts like “the benefit of grief” and Harumi’s redemption arc.

(And I _suppose_ that it would _technically_ make sense for Harumi to have _some_ attachment to Lloyd due to their similar backstories and the fact that she’s been trying to drag him into her side since SoG (even if the “romantic attraction” concept were to be chucked out the window _as it was supposed to.)_ That’s an argument for another day. I’m glad that Doc has steered Lloyd’s arc far, faaar away from all things Lloyrumi. (And made better decisions practically all around tbh)

What's really annoying about this is the guy is made of solid titanium. I know that's a little OP but dying every single time just doesn't make sense when you're built like a freight train.

Wasting the potentual of the ice emporer story line was one of the most agregious problems with the last few seasons, the guy apparantly spent DECADES as a completely different person but it is never adressed.

I really like how dragons rising explicitly goes out of its way to make Zane fail a competition where he needs to act like himself/just a robot and it says alot about how theyre approaching him in the new seasons.

I’m still wondering what happened the Zane’s falcon. Dude just completely disappeared after season 8

So it wouldn't be Zanes falcon anymore, but just a random Robotic falcon if someone would try to repair it

I think Crystalized could've made it work if P.I.X.A.L dying made Zane go into a mental crisis of trying to become her personality (like the detective and pirate scenes) so he could realize that he always masks his personality fearing he could go full Ice Emperor mode again, then remembers what Sally taught him about emotions so he can go full rage to avenge her (Return of the Ice Emperor).

For me i think zanes character started to fall off in season 6 and after that hes been the opposite of is arc basically and smart robot with a personality that he doesn't even show half the time thank god we have dragons rising

Agreed with everything Zane is my favorite ninja and I hope they do something interesting with him in DR and probably fix his character cuz there's so much they can do with him that isn't using him as a punching bag, ripping a part of his face off, and making him greet death like an old friend

Amazing how the now overused "He was a robot all along" trope worked so well in Ninjago. Only Kai achieving his full potential came close to Zane attaining his.

DR has such a big opportunity to fix Zane's character it's unreal, he was actually really great in S1 when you consider how he was just given a (now that we know) impossible task, they managed to make the most out of his interactions with Frohickey and generally it's all so well done Doc also said that the Mystery of what the Pod he was held in is, is a thing that won't be addressed in S2 of DR, likely S3 if I'm gonna be honest and I am FUCKING JUMPING in excitement to see that, because it mens Seasons long mysterys/plot points/potentially even Character arcs Doc, Kevin and Co are planning some amazing things for Ninjago from what it looks like, and I can't wait to see that

I actually really liked his arc in quest for the lost powers where he finally learns to forgive himself for what happened in S11

I have just seen dragón rising zanes day episode and i was thinking exactly on that Zane was mire than a robot 🤖 I AM expecting more zane development actually lets see how it ends

I really hope we get some more focus episodes for Zane. Like maybe some about him trying to find out what happened to Pixal and reuniting with her because Zane has been done dirty these past couple of seasons and he doesn’t deserve to lose Pixal on top of that.

Good, honestly. Zane tended to REALLY hog up storylines and focus away from cast members who needed it more, and his character really didn’t have anywhere else to go after his main arcs were wrapped up. He just deteriorated into a walking plot device by Crystalized. Zane’s an interesting case, because his character was done so well early on and he easily had the most storytelling potential outside of Lloyd, but that also meant he was becoming a narrative parasite for everyone else. Atleast in my personal opinion. Pixel, who was another character added to further Zane’s character, completely invalidated Nya’s old role on the team, forcing her out of a rather fun niche. I’m glad he’s being put on the backburner, his highs as a character blow every other ninja out of the water save for Lloyd, and I think having him take a backseat for other ninja to shine is perfectly fine to me. For example, Nya’s agency and capability in DR S1 was absolutely GREAT to see, and Kai having an increased presence with having to manually chart out paths and map-make was super cool. That process was something Zane most likely would’ve been shoehorned in to automatically route or something, but having Kai do that was so cool to me.

idk about the rest of you but looking back at ninjago im really starting to hate the decision to make zane a "nindroid" i mean as good of a twist as it was it also took a tool at how they portrayed the character in later iterations, one of my beefs with the lego ninjago movie was how they portrayed zane in that movie compared to how he was originally portrayed in the franchise's earlier days!

When zane became the ice emperor there was a chance to show a lot of character developmentbut they just kinda brushed it off i'll hope that zane gets another chance in the future seasons

Would not say that it's completely a downfall to his character as a whole. Though, I do believe the book should be made as some kind of shorts in the mean time like pre-merge or something I feel like his past as well as him in S1-S4 made him a great character but then he went like a full on robot, which is something I didn't like as well. I honestly did not mind the voice stuff, but when you mentioned the Ice emperor stuff, I never thought of that at all, but you're right. I was upset about zane being like a complete robot all the time, that felt kind of awkward to me, but I love what dragons rising season 1 did with him and it felt like some good Zane development after return of the Ice Emperor. I think he's a great character because of his past, but I want to see the redefinition of that later on, just like what they did with him in S4. or what they did with Kai in Dragons rising Season 1. What about him and kai vs. that mamoth in Master of the mountain though? I thought that was fine for him?

While I agree with all the major points in this video, there are some small things I wish to mention. 1. In Possession, there were 3 different “Zane gimmicks” in three different episodes (backward speaking Zane, loud Zane, and pirate Zane), so it technically wasn’t a one time thing in this season. 2. If by “one time thing” you mean it only happened in one season of the Wilfilm era, then that technically also isn’t correct (I’ll let the comments figure out what other season I’m talking about). Zane gimmick: A plot point in the show of Ninjago where the fact that Zane is a robot means he is broken or damaged in some sort of manner for comedic effect. Again, I agree with all the main points, these are just some nitpicks I noticed and wanted to correct.

Hes towards the bottom for me, I think its because well he doesnt have Pixal and he hasnt really helped out a lot, The other original ninja stand out in there own way, Kai being the focused ninja for DR S2 Jay Becomig Evil and Losing His memories Cole well hes made a few friends and he has a good friendship with Geo Nya is basically a Sister figure to Lloyd since she helps him deal with her visions And Lloyd Well we already Know

I don’t like Sora’s character. I don’t like sora. She is selfish and only cares bout herself, at least in my opinion. She doesn’t support arin and said that the merge gave her something better and doesn’t even care about arin although he lost a lot in the merge. When sora felt useless in season 1 episode 5, arin still supported her by giving her a hug. When arin was left alone with his shuriken in the ending of episode 10, sora didn’t care and talked with the other ninja, but Lloyd had to talk to arin instead. Then, in episode 20, sora got what she wanted (getting to use her power on her own), while arin needs to learn to use spinjitzu on objects. So ninjago really needs to fix sora imo

Sora is a fine character. Her negativity towards Arin was an intentional character flaw that is addressed in Episode 14. When she sees how negative Arrakore is she realises how unlikable she can sound at times. I think it's a good thing that the characters have realisitic flaws to overcome, rather than being infallible and perfect.

But major character flaws like sora’s need to be fixed in around season 4 or 5 of dragons rising, cuz ninjago should not be having selfish attitudes like sora’s. Best friends(in this case, arin and sora)are supposed to be best friends towards each other, not one best friend being friendly towards the other, and the other being such a negative influence to him/her. Really wish sora had other character flaws instead. Not trying to raise an argument here these are just my opinions.

The worst part is almost every season in the entire show they make Zane break down and just have him dead on a table for a couple episodes because he’s too overpowered and would probably figure out the plot twist on his own.

i actuelly really liked zane in ninjago confidential they gave us something new with zane i really liked the way he was acting as a detactive it was just funny like if jay was acting that way it would'nt feel special sense jay is the comic relif so him acting as a goofy detactive would'nt feel special but having this goofy act come out of zane felt fresh and it just brought joy to me like we are always used to zane for being this smart character so to see him act that way in ninjago confidential felt like somthing new came out of the character he isn't just a robot who tells facts he can also be a fun charcater and not take things seriously from time to time it just brought joy to me seing zane act that way cause we are not used to him to act the way he did in ninjago confidential and it wasn't expected from his character so yeh i really liked detactive zane it was just alot of fun and his ralation with pixal in that episode was just great i really liked how annoyed pixal was like the writers gave us somthing new out of the relation between zane and pixal and i really liked that

nah Ninjago's current writer lineup is fine. It has changed since the 11 minute seasons where Zane is really bad
