How Nigerians Risk Their Lives for This Substance

In this video, we document the risk people face to min Tin in Jos Plateau State Nigeria.
The risk is too high that anyone could die from the collapse of the pit, and all for just $20 wage per day.

Wow! Over here this should get a Pulitzer Prize for a documentary. That mud is so heavy, can't believe the way they scoop it, haul it up and then carry it away. What strenuous work that must be and to see all the faces and smiles. Incredible people making the best in really tough conditions.

Watching your content in cold northern hemisphere (Finland). I truly hope that people of Nigeria and all Africa could break free from unfair shackles western banking system have created. It's new era slavery. Sadly we are are part of that. While you are freeing yourself from it don't trust any new master while conquering freedom. Become new beacon of hope for the humanity. Stay strong, pray for yourself and for us.

Plateau State, Nigeria. Jos (nicknamed the #TinCity), the capital city of the State has the largest deposits of tin/columbite (part of which was greatly used in the colonial era developing the TinCan port in Lagos, West/former capital of Nigeria and rumoured to have contributed partly to the development in the post industrial era in Britain 🇬🇧) in Nigeria, one of coolest climate (temp. ~ 11-30°C) in the tropical savannah of Nigeria (jokingly called the 'Europe of the tropical belt by some) as it's an elevated region (averaging over 300m a.s.l, highest point at over 700m) hence, named 'Plateau State'.

The paymasters leave the local people to use antiquated mining methods phased out nearly 200 years ago in the West and many places even the Middle East. The same goes for gold mining. What compensation exists for those injured during these dangerous excavations? 😳 This is just sad.

The disappointing thing here is the fact that after all these toiling, someone's hard work is going to be exploited. In the end, the payoff is worth it.

It's a real pity that they have to mine manually. I remember the one former governor of Plateau (Joshua Dariye) was caught with a briefcase stuffed with pound stirling. I'm sure he wasn't the only one that did this. Just think how all those millions could be put to good use. I thought the tin deposits had been exhausted when the British left. I remember reading about it in school in the UK. They also mined "columbite" too. You already covered the gemstones in Taraba State.

Respect to how strong African people are. Sad we were let down by our evil politicians. These could have been a modern and thriving industry in Jos that should be operating in a first world level with ultra modern technology and safety standards with guaranteed PPE and healthcare for the workers. This is why we need an intelligent person to lead us instead of a demented and sick old man who is also a criminal and an illiterate. A person who understands taxation, commerce and industry plus the value a country can provide and receive by merely looking after the welfare of its citizens.

Thing is, they can demand 5x what they're getting paid. It's called hazard pay here in America. And demand a settlement payment if they are injured or killed doing the work so that their family will not suffer financially. All these things are negotiable. They're paying them pennies while they make thousands on those same pennies. They can demand safer working conditions for the mines. The mines should be supported so that they do not collapse. Gotta do what you gotta do to make a living but pay and safety are valid negotiable subjects. Shoot, let them form a union that can negotiate on their collective behalf.

What they're selling is brute Mineral, what you're talking about is refined Mineral. Both are by far apart from Raw Ore to the Mineral. Those who do the transformations are another sector that have their own troubles. Minerals are not the theories on the pages of newspapers or sensations of social Media.

You can not just sell Mining Rights to developers, when the resources are not of economic importance. If you industrialize what should be artisanal, there will be losses. Government is not stupid. They know that the area has been going through exploitation for hundreds of years and therefore depletions are the issues or deep mining procedures undertaken which requires lots of algorithms before you give it considerations. Not all deposits are for industrial importance
