And also, the Paperclip program was really focused on NAZI scientists specifically, it was just "we want ALL top German Scientists, whether they are Jews, Slav, White, Brown, Black, or even nazi, before the Soviets get them". Because of this, most of them weren't necessarily nazi ideologues.

One of the decising things in hes space interest, was the german sci-fi movie "Frau im Mond" (woman in the moon), he saw in a young age. And hes connection with Walter Dornberger is missing completly here, it was very important. When, on october 3. 1942, the first a-4 rocket (the name of the V2) reached space, Dornberger said; Do you know what we just did? We opened the spaceage! von Braun was imprisoned for over a week, when he mentioned the terrible conditions the slave labourers lived under in the Mittelbau-Dora camp, and only survived because he was irreplacable. And he had to be a member of the SS, as Heinrich Himler overtook the rocketprojekt. It started as an army projekt.

War often means huge steps forward in many technologies. The need is imminent, funds are limitless as are the human resources. Remember the Manhattan Project? Sadly, prisoners were "used" in the German factories. However, the fact that a lot of later batches V1's and V2's didn't function very well is also thanks to these guys. At great peril to their own life, many implanted small sabotage issues just by e.g. not following the required strict standards for construction such as not tightening enough certain bolts and nuts, or badly fitting hoses and pipes. As such, those poor devils contributed to the war effort against Germany.

My Father and my Uncle, twins, born in 1910, in Germany, sometime after college, around 1937, they left Germany, not wanting to be in the SA organization asked to be in it. My Father went to study at the ETH, in Zurich, and met my Mother there. HE and my Uncle were Catholic, and my Mother, was Jewish, and had been a fashion model in Europe, in the late 1920's-30's before NAZI'ism rose in Germany. Her family was from Poland, before she was born, and went to Zurich, in 1905, after my Grandfather had been drafted into the Cavalry in the Rosso-Japanese war. My parents then went to London, UK in 1939, because of the war, and were joined then by my Uncle. After WW II started, my Father and Uncle, as Germans, were sent in 1940, to Canada, until they returned to the Uk in 1943, after which my parents married, and I was born there in 1944. My Father was autowise with cars, and as I remember, was really good with cars, and their repair for many years, He worked in drafting for a US defense company. It's ironic, when London was bombed by the V2's there, we were. By way we immigrated to the US at NYC on the ship, Queen Mary in 1949. Yes, the Germans were, and still are very good in various forms of technology, then and today. I have been an Amateur Radio Operator for over 60 years, and was in the US Air Force, after college, 1969-73, in another war, known as Vietnam! 😊

Von Braun would certainly have lost his position at the top of the German rocket program if he had refused to join the SS, as expected of all first-echelon people working under the Nazi regime, but Von Braun's world-class rationalization skills enabled him to excuse his participation. It's all but certain he looked the other way to maintain a thin veil of deniability about the slave labor impressed into service in building the V-2 missiles. One of Von Braun's most notable achievements, to my mind, was his success in avoiding being photographed in his SS uniform. Although you put him in SS garb in your cartoons, in real life Von Braun was apparently very careful to stay out of camera-shot whenever he wore his uniform to official functions. Even then he was planning for a post-Nazi future, since it hardly seems likely to have occurred by chance.

I think it is up to debate whether joining the SS was a pure career move for Von Braun, which didn't make the SS any more vicious than it already was, but gave VonBraun the authority to continue his work, which really seemed to have been the priority in his life. You can't say he didn't turn a blind eye, but rebelling against the regime was the only truly ethical option but was also deadly. Among the same line, Hitlers to-be personal doctor who was partly jewish joined the Nazi party to secure himself. In any case, you portray it as if the other 1600 scientists surely were all ideological nazis simply because they came from a country with Nazi dictatorship rule, where they could have simply been German engineers/scientists who were enlisted into serving the war effort or else get shot or sent to the front. I am not saying that none of them were drawn into Nazi ideology, but come on please think realistically and don't sensationalize. If they were all ideological nazis, why would they defect to the nation who brought Nazism down and executed the key players? How could they integrate without issues into the American lifestyle and culture? In the same vein, you would not assume that in 2023 all Russian scientists would be avid Putin and Ukrain invasion supporters today. Rather you would assume that engineers and scientists, being smarter sub-populations, would be more likely to see through and have an issue with a dictatorship. As Nazi ideology was verd pseudo-scientific and esoteric, it is likely not something smart scientists were naturally drawn towards. Dehumanizing / judging thousands of people with a label just because their heritage is always problematic.

Fun fact, another invention made by the Germans in WW2 was made because shortage of food like potatoes and meat. In a desperate attempt to get more needed calories into the soldiers, the Germans collaborated with the Japanese, to get a new rice dish. It was highly nutritious and said to be delicious. So they named after the party: Nasi. One of the leaders (Hermann Göring) was especially fond of it, so a special menu was cooked: Nasi Göring. He ate it a lot and became quite fat, hence (one of) his nicknames) "Der Dicke" translates as "the fat one"".

I agree. There's still the issue that these people were aware what their work was being used for. I'm not convinced that they thought Hitler wanted to send a love letter into space. In the same way that there are mandatory reporters for abuse, and we can't aid and abet criminals and their crimes, there is a culpability. Someone can not share the values of a pedo, but if they know the abuse is happening, they share in the responsibility if they don't stop enabling it or pretending it isn't happening. It isn't as easy to walk away clean as some seem to think.

It's not about trusting the Government, it's about thinking about the big picture. Applying Occam's razor, if you will. Plus, if you really really really need a stronger argument to challenge your belief, then ask yourself why the USSR didn't challenge the US ever on this one? They were, mind you, the first to try to debunk the landing by the US if they had any hard evidence. But well, if you still need to believe in your gut feelings rather than weigh the evidence, go ahead. You are not alone and it is not the role of internet foreigners to argue with you on this one. Just so you know, others have a different opinion in this one because of different evidence and explanations that are much more watertight than the common conspiracies.
