On January 4, 1976, a fleet of boats headed toward the Hawaiian island of Kaho‘olawe. The goal: take the island back from the US military for the Hawaiian people.
Since World War II, the US military had used the island for bombing practice and decimated its land. But the story of the taking of this one island was part of a bigger history of the taking of all of Hawaii. The decades-long efforts to reclaim it would help spark a movement to renew the culture and traditions of the islands - and a push for Hawaiian sovereignty.

what I find interesting is that the Christian bible's 6000 years old right? A God created a garden & made the people he put in it ignorant & made it a crime for them to obtain knowledge right? Then along comes the "serpent" & tells the people that knowledge is their right & not bad at all & they should learn about the world & life & themselves & generally get an education, that their "god" is just petty & small & scared of what they'll find if they obtain knowledge. So isn't it interesting that the 60,000 year old God/Creator of Australia is the "Rainbow Serpent". Has anyone ever thought about that & thought about who the REAL God in the bible story likely is? Although I guess that would be a crime in Christianity, to think & obtain knowledge like that, wouldn't it

I am Native Hawaiian, just want inform everyone about the misinterpretation of the word "colonialism." Hawai'i is not a colonized nation but rather an OCCUPIED country! Colonization and illegally occupation are very different definitions. For example, Native Americans or Native Alaskans would be considered a colonized people because they weren't recognize as an independent nation. On the other hand, Hawaiians got recognized by many foreign European countries thus Hawai'i gained it's independence in 1843 until the overthrow in 1893. Therefore Hawaiians do not fall under the category of colonialism.
@strawberryoes

i see what you mean, but ... under all that, isn't it still giving the ... final say on the terminology and state of things to the OCCUPIERS/COLONISERS? i would vote the oppressors don't get a say. it's not by any particular superior virtue that Hawaiians were recognised as as independent while natives of other places were not. it's not like the natives in the places that have been colonised were like "wooo yeah let's get taken advantage of and murdered by these guys, sweet!" while Hawaiians said no thanks. i feel like i am explaining myself very poorly, my words are failing me, but i hope my point is understandable. ///// basically "For example, Native Americans or Native Alaskans would be considered a colonized people because they weren't recognize as an independent nation. " the only real reason they weren't but hawaii was is basically on the whim of the invading whites. they were still invading, still ARE...

@WaterspoutsOfTheDeep

@@me15296 No science is almost core to my argument. Christianity is attributed to bringing about modern science(Newton and the Christian mindset he published), scientific method("test all things and hold fast to that which is true" Christian scripture followed), universities(Oxford first university, Christianity), which came about in the Christian West not the East and led to the rise of the West, which ultimately brought humanity into the modern age. That is what highly noted scholar and scientist Joseph Needham of Cambridge concluded from his life's work studying this. The coherent inherentness of the universe mindset which comes from knowing a logical God created the universe thus logic should be found in the universe changed the course of humanity forever. You can thank Issac Newton for publishing that and making it mainstream.

@@xinjiangstan1233 identity politics is just a symptom of the underlying conflict of class. You notice that the oppression of native Hawaii was driven by businessmen, the government only intervening on their behalf when it benefitted them and missionaries helping that fight on a cultural battlefield. Same with the wars later on. The Spanish-American war was to generate more assets and property for Americans; the Vietnam and Korean wars were to prevent and terrorize the global working class from rising up against their oppressors. And the domestic issues of incarceration and commercialization/commodification of Hawaii itself as a tourist attraction is all in the name of reducing the native Hawaiian's right to their home and convert it into property to generate capital for American businessmen.
@Sivah_Akash

@@xinjiangstan1233, I'm not saying tribalism isn't without it's own issues. Of course, Hawaii had it's own internal problems before any Americans came there. Anyways the point you make about it splitting societies applies to individualistic countries too, an example being the US. All I'm saying is that people were converted from not caring about individual lands to caring about one. Before people are free to go where ever the want and lived in harmony with nature. But now, everyone lives seperated in their own domains. It's like being converted from apes to lions. And thus living less with nature and socially, to more of, I live for myself and I want to protect my properties from other humans or animals.

Thank you for this video. It was so informative. The abuse of Koho'olawe by the US military is so heartbreaking
As a Haoli (white mainlander), moving to Hawaii Kai in 5th grade was a real eye opener about our cultural heritages. The vitriol disgust and hate thrown at me forced me to do 2 things: 1. Learn to fight 2. Understand the cultural devastation that my Government and the corrupt white businessman. Even importing workers when the # of available workers were too low after warfare and genocidal practices... After 6 months, I was finally assimilated enough that I was finally, truly, a local. Hawaii is a unique and beautiful paradise! Currently, the island are being gobbled up rich , elites, and corporations. So, before , you profess to be an expert about hunting and various odd topics that ppl are discussing here,, please learn the extended history of the Hawaiian Islands. Mahalo and Aloha 👨👩👦
