Yes! Gives me hope that scaling up is possible without the need for too much extra human resource. Grazing management is the primary time consumer and flock size shouldn’t affect that much. Thanks as always for your comment! -the Shepherdess

@@theShepherdess It just takes time to figure everything out and get everything set up and streamlined. Once you get more time and experience behind you, you'll be zipping along without a thought. I'm rotational grazing 30 sheep and 45 head of cattle by myself with once a day moves on 352 acres and I'm only about maybe 50% efficient. I'm trying to accumulate enough fence, poly and reels to keep the main pastures set up so all I have to do is move subdivisions and work the gates. I've still got a lot of water infrastructure to set up yet too. I intend to have everything set up so it's easy for one person to handle whether it's me or an employee. It'll be a grazing paradise when I get it done.

@@theShepherdess No, I haven't gotten that brave yet, lol. I have them on the same farm but I run the sheep behind the cattle. I had them all get out of their respective paddocks once a couple weeks ago and it was pure chaos. The cattle were chasing the sheep, the dogs were chasing the cattle and I was scrambling to regain some semblance of composure. Looking back on it now it was quite entertaining. I think they were all more or less playing. They see each other every day so I know they're used to each other, I think it was more of a, "Hey we can finally interact with no fence between us!" type of moment. lol. I was walking the cattle over to their new paddock and the sheep thought I was giving everyone a bag of feed so they jumped their single strand of fence and the show was on. They all made a circle and came right back to me so it was over as fast as it started but I'd have rather grabbed my 18j fencer than witness that mess there for a second.

A few days ago I asked you in a Short if you thought it was a good idea to place sheep on my 28 acres 1.5 hours away from my house. This video answered my question. And the answer is 'no'.

My new investments (Suffolk) will have me herding on our forest land for a few weeks at a time which means I'll be on a horseback protecting my Sheep.

Great video Grace, funny how often people will overlook how much time (or how little, lol😂) they put into their farm when working another job. Want to update you on my new little herd, I'm very happy to say that my galloways are already broke to the hot wire and grazing in their first paddock as I'm typing this. Considering this is only my third day of owning them, I could not be more happy with this breed. Truly a blessing from God how smoothly everything has been going! God Bless!

I spend just about as much time as you per week on the farm depending on whether I work fast or not...😄😋 probably 2 hours a day . And like you say some days there are extra chores to do and some days there’s barely anything to keep up with. Very good video. More small farmers need to share info like this 👍🏻👏🏻💕

When we are milking, it takes me right at one hr in the morning and 15 min at night to do our barn chores. Then I spend another 45 min feeding cattle on pasture. So I spend roughly 2hrs per day on a daily basis. My children tend to the chickens and ducks, so that would increase my chore time if I was doing that also. I would guess that half of my Saturdays are dedicated to extra farm work; hauling manure, fixing/building new fence, barn repairs, moving cattle or sheep, etc.

my 4 chickens and 2 little dogs, i spend about 1 hour feeding, and the rest of the day interacting/ playing/ health care for the dogs, some days the dogs eat more than others but thats ok i enjoy spending time with the chickens and dogs,,,,,

I try to live bt the Six P's Prior Preperation Prevents a Particulary Poor Performance. I found that most of the work is in the planning, strategising, dreaming, envisaging etc so when the day comes... Boom, you know what to expect, you do the work, you do it well, you easily move on to the next...

Great video! I have had some modified boots like yours in fact my left foot muck boot I have to use plastic bag😀 . we had bought 5 acres raw wooded land getting it cleared and building on it past 20 yrs just quit my regular full time to farm part time and sawmill shop part time. Now I am down to 50-60 hrs work week! But when you love what you do it's not work😂 hang in there you'll make it !

I'm so thankful for you and these videos. I'm so close to pasture raising. In the next month I will be putting my animals out to pasture. I'm a nurse and works 3 days a week 12 hours, I will be moving the animals on my days off. Regarding the protein supplement you mentioned, do you give that to your sheep also?

Thank you so much for this comment! My dorpers do not need the protein supplement. As long as the hay is a decent quality they will go it on Hay alone :).

I've heard guinea fowl are very loud and tend to wander far enough away from home to get picked off by predators. Does this square with your experience? Do they work well for you?

How many sheep do you farm? Any idea how much more time is needed for each 100 sheep? Working on a farm business plan.

Did you see any difference in parasite pressure from dropping down to twice weekly moves?

Not much, but this year was exceptionally bad for them. We had relentless rain from February to may. That saying, this was not a great case-study year for parasite management… but I guess the grazing management served us well since we didn’t lose any sheep or lambs to parasites over spring! -the Shepherdess
