How much support does the US have for a greater presence in the Indo-Pacific? | DW News

The United States has pledged to uphold mutual defense agreements with the Philippines and Japan, in the face of growing military assertiveness by China. Joe Biden made the promise during a historic first trilateral summit with Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Junior and Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida at the White House. Beijing has made territorial claims on disputed waters in the South and East China Seas with both the Philippines and Japan. Our East Asia correspondent James Chater now takes a look at the impact of the diplomatic activity on the region.

Philippines has been colonized for too long to think critically. Bringing Japan and US, both formal imperialist and colonist powers into South China Sea is a threat to the peace. Philippines need to think with reasons instead of with emotions. Has China hurt you in any substantial way in the past? What about Japan and US? Yes, there is dispute regarding the water, but have China not been restraint so far? With China’s resource, if China were as vengeful as US, your little boat parked on the Chinese island for the past twenty something years would have been bombed to atoms. Your boats disturbing China claimed water would not have been sprayed with water only. I really think China has been acting extremely restrained and responsible so far. You will just end up to be on the menu that US is ordering from, the Ukraine 2.0, to be sacrificed in US effort to maintaining its waning hegemony. Good luck. 😅

There are a lot of confused folks on this issue. First the name of the body of water signifies its location and not its ownership. For example, the Gulf of Mexico is not the territorial water of Mexico. Sea of Japan does not belong to Japan. And obviously the Indian Ocean is not owned by India! Second, PRC claims much of the South China Sea as TERRITORIAL WATER. No one agrees with this. Philippines and others that adjoins the South China Sea claim Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in accordance with UNCLOS, the UN treaty that the PRC signed onto, that defines the global rule on EEZ. An EEZ gives you fishing and mining rights out to about 200 miles but does not turn that part of the sea into territorial water of the nation claiming that EEZ. Territorial water means it belongs to that nation and is subject to its laws including physical access. Freedom of navigation claimed by many nations including the U.S. obviously implies that we don’t recognize PRC’s claim of South China Sea as territorial water, but international water subject to EEZ rules. Third, the U.S. agreed that Taiwan, whose official name is the Republic of China, is part of the Chinese nation, that Taiwan is part of China. Read all agreements and memorandum of understanding signed by the U.S. carefully. Nowhere does the U.S. agree that Taiwan is part of the People’s Republic of China! China is a nation that has two states, the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of China. What the US agreed to do was recognize that the PRC as the state in control of the mainland and thus agreed that the PRC should takeover the China seat in the UN and also agreed to move its embassy to Beijing. It also agreed that the two Chinese states should eventually reunify but only using peaceful means.

I asked ChatGPT This is the answer: Japan: With its close alliance with the US and its own territorial disputes with China in the East China Sea, Japan could potentially support US efforts in the region. Australia: Another key US ally in the Asia-Pacific region, Australia has been increasingly vocal about its concerns regarding China's assertiveness in the South China Sea and could potentially cooperate with the US in countering Chinese activities. India: While not traditionally aligned with the US in the same way as Japan and Australia, India has its own tensions with China along their disputed border in the Himalayas. India also has concerns about China's growing influence in the Indian Ocean region, which could lead to closer cooperation with the US in the broader Indo-Pacific context. South Korea: While South Korea maintains close economic ties with China, it also relies heavily on the US for security guarantees. Depending on the situation, South Korea could potentially support US efforts in the region, although it would likely seek to balance its relationship with both powers carefully. ASEAN countries: Although not likely to join in a military confrontation, some Southeast Asian countries have disputes with China over territorial claims in the South China Sea. They may seek diplomatic and political support from the US and other allies in addressing these disputes.
