Mike - is there anything to worry about or considering when building a conditioned attic above the living space but having a vented attic above the garage? I understand that the partition wall in the attic for the garage would be insulated with open cell in my scenario, but is there anything wrong with this? I originally intended on continuing the R30 on the roof deck with open cell but have now thought about the issues above the attic with the building up of moisture at the peak. Maybe I’m overthinking this, but was hoping for your input.

Great explanation of the humidity and due point table. Very interesting, and it's true most finished homes have 30% humidity and 72f. That's a good basis. As a temporary measure I install an r20 in attics when the soffit isn't installed and there are high winds. That usually prevents an excess of condensation for the mud to try on the ceiling.

Thank you for all of your videos. Straight and to the point. I am looking at finishing my basement and your videos have been very helpful. I will be meeting up with a spray foam contractor soon and will be looking at 1-1.5” of closed cell over the exterior poured walls and 2-3” in rim joist areas(I live in Nebraska). That way I have the vapor barrier and air sealing I need. I plan to come back and 2x4 metal frame out at around 2” off the walls. Then use BIB blown in insulation to fill the whole metal stud cavity.Thoughts?

If you do flash and batt will the 3 or 4 inches of batt insulation insulate the surface of the 2" spray foam sufficiently to cause condensation on the surface of the spray foam? In this situation the inside surface of the spray foam is being cooled by cold conduction from outside but is insulated from the warm interior by the batt insulation.

Good video and well covered!👍 Im doing a building and have a pile of rigid XPS 2” and 3”. Was planning to fill attic and spray/seal all edges. Since the XPS is not adhered to the bottom/back side of the OSB roof deck/wall; is there a Chance of moisture/ condensation to build in that space? I watched the 4 part series, and want to make sure best approach. This will be a heated storage space. It’s a 48x84 with 20 sidewall pole building, roof deck and walls sheathed with 1/2” OSB Would there be any Benefit to apply spread groan over the top of the XPS? I have on hand 10000 Square feet of 3” and 7000 Square feet of 2” Plans to place below concrete slab and in walls and to roof deck. Would appreciate to hear if you have seen This application. Thanks and great videos on this topic!! 👍👍

If I build a house with a conditioned air attic with cathedral 12/12 roof, with a loft for living, does it make sense to do a whole house with closed cell to the minimum needed for air sealing, and condensation. And then do open cell over the top of that to get a full insulation R value and do it more affordably? Edit: I just watched all four parts of your cathedral ceiling videos, but still not sure about getting enough R value in zone 5 in the U.S.

Just got back our updated quote from our insulator and the price of Closed Cell has jumped 30%. You think it will come back down soon, say before fall? The new price puts the foam insulation into the "luxury" category for our small home build. I don't want to do batts, is the cost still worth it? Thanks for the knowledge you share with us, greatly appreciated!

  • @SprayJones

For one, our foam has NOT gone up 30%. Smaller operators are having to buy product wherever if the are cut off, and sometimes that means panic prices to them and so on to you. SPF is totally worth it. Closed cell is the BEST product for insulation in 80 years. You only have to pay that bill once and you are good for generations. I think you need to get more info.

You say it's simple but the reality is behind that chart and the standard is complexity. That delta in the chart that shows condensation can go both ways, you can raise your indoor RH and get condensation and you can change your outdoor temperature and get condensation, you can increase your wind chill and get condensation, you can have both higher humidity and lower temperatures. So you need to know your climate zone and your incidence of extreme temperatures and then factor in a % of buffer to REALLY insure no condensation behind the walls of a structure. Otherwise, over time, you can get mold growth. Mold is a funny thing, all it needs is 21% moisture content and it grows, no matter what, then when it drys up it stops growing but lays dormant waiting for its chance to grow again. Mold can grow very fast, I have seen 1/4" thick mold layer grow in an air handler from one summer of condensation inside the air handler from a stuck chilled water valve. so, in short, the answer to this question should involve the ashrae standards of climate zone and incidence, the R value of 1 and 2" layers of the foam and an agreed upon buffer to make sure nothing condenses during extreme weather events. If you really want to geek out on this, you can take in projections of global warming trends we are already seeing witch do not necessarily mean things are getting warmer either in your climate zone, it really means more extreme weather events more often and warmer summers.

@@SprayJones like most things in the universe, it's complicated. global warming may not just be distributed equally over each month as a few extra degrees of heat. The Earth is a dynamic place filled with saltwater, fresh water, huge global air currents, giant slabs of ice etc. The Earth is spinning ya know, so this causes some places to experience extremes of weather instead of just a few degrees of warmth, some like deserts in Australia, Africa do experience extra degrees but places like the midwest of US , and south along the gulf experience more tornadoes, or warmer winters on average but with colder extremes.

So you’re saying that even the screws that stick through need a solid inch covering them to keep them from dripping condensation? So say they’re sticking through 1/2 inch then you’d need 1 and 1/2 inches of spray foam?
