Will muriatic acid lower total dissolved solids if my level is too high?

No. Muriatic acid and just about any chemcial added to your pool will increase your TDS level. One gallon of muriatic acid (31.45%) in a 20k gallon pool, will raise TDS level by 18ppm. Only way to lower high TDS is to partially drain the pool and refill with fresh water. There are no chemicals that will lower TDS level. Salt pool will have a higher TDS level than chlorine pools. Many people have different opinions on what the TDS level should be in a pool. Some say closest to 0ppm as possible, some say below 100 is the goal. Some also say as far as up to 2000 can be fine. All depends on your own pools fingerprint on what is best for it! ( Obvousily as closest to 0ppm as possible with be the wisest guess but that will dedicate alot of time and money to manage that. Most of the time draining the pool about a foot and then test your tds again. Follow that process again until more desirable TDS level. Make sure your plumbing won't draw any air when the waterline goes below the skimmer. Also check with your local city's regulations for water dispoal. Hope this helps!

I have like a 1000 gal spa, I only have chlorine and ph tester, right now I used a 3 in chlorine tablet that you usually show in your video. Is that too much? My chlorine level is above 10ppm right now. Ph is 8.2.

I just added 1 1/2 lbs of shock to my above ground pool last night after getting the PH and Alk balanced and it did absolutely nothing! It was as green this morning as it was yesterday. It's a 5,061 gallon pool. Any suggestions?

Why aren't these handy ratios on your cheat sheet? That would make it very handy.

What exactly is the difference between chlorine and chlorine shock? I thought shock just referred to giving your pool a chlorine overload to raise levels/tackle algae problem.

Shock is both the act (shocking a pool to quickly raise with lots of chlorine) and a product (chlorine shock, a.k.a. cal-hypo shock).

Unfortunately it means there's something wrong with the test or the way you tested! The TOTAL chlorine = Free Chlorine + Combined Chlorine.

I need help!! I used 2 kits of the hth green to blue shock advance and I vacuumed and am filtering my pool but it's still yellow.. what do I do next?? Please respond..

@@SwimUniversity we brought a sample to the pool place it's says everything is high! It's now a teal color.. they gave us a product called weekly revive.. said wait 24 hours.. now last issue is my psi gauge.. keeps going to 21 I have a sand filter.. so I backwash and it goes down a few notches after but then hour later goes back up and my water pressure for the water that pushes out into the pool slows down after about 2 hours.. it only squirts out full force when I backwash but if I keep doing that then I have to keep refilling so I'm totally lost! water comes out clear though so I don't understand.. pool people said it could be the filter or the sand needs to be changed.. we only had the pool for 2 years.. we are beginners and we just really need help.. so please if u can tell me anything u can..

1 gallon of 10.5% chlorine(pool grade chlorine) will raise your chlorine level to 10ppm in a 10k gallon pool. You have 1 gallon of chlorine setting your chlorine level at 3ppm??? What percent chlorine are you describing in this video?

What calculator are you using? I didn't show the math, but here it is: Adding 0.13 ounces of pure chlorine to 1,000 gallons of water will raise the chlorine by 1 PPM. But since liquid chlorine is about 10% chlorine by volume, you'll need 10 times that amount to get to "pure" chlorine (100%). So 0.13*10 = 1.3 ounces per 1,000 gallons. If you have a 10,000 gallon pool, that's 13 ounces of liquid chlorine to raise it by 1 PPM. So if you need to raise it by around 1-2 PPM, that's anywhere between 13 and 26 ounces, or an average-ish of 1 gallon (16 ounces).

@SwimUniversity In your video, the chart you had was setting the chlorine level at 3ppm. So if you're saying 13floz of 10% chlorine in a 10k gallon pool will raise 1ppm, then 13 x 3 = 39floz to get to 3ppm. Not sure why or what we are averaging here to put a whole gallon of chlorine in the pool?

If you were looking to achieve 3ppm of chlorine in your 10k gallon pool, then 1 gallon of 2.19% chlorine (sodium Hypochlorite) would give you that result. Using 2 different pool calculators and getting the same results.

And you can't say ABOUT 10% chlorine. All pool grade liquid chlorine will be anywhere between 10%-12%. You'll have to factor that perfect in to get your exact amount. May only be a half or full ppm difference on the lower ppm side but it will have a multiplying effect once you reach higher chlorine ppm levels. You can really mess someone up who is taking this advice with a vinyl liner as well.
