This lookd far less than whait I would have expected, even if there’s still a massive (MASSIVE) gap with Tennis, which is hard to understand considering how Badminton is popular in Asia…

Lovely video. But this just shows that badminton is just a very underpaid, undervalued and underestimated sport. Such a shame considering it’s probably one of the most fascinating sport to watch.

I kind of want to make videos of badminton content, but dunno where to start. I just got back to it after many years. Im sad i did not get very into it early on in my life, such an interesting and fun sport. And also got back due to some reasons of me needing to keep away from Physical and Contact Sports

Loved this video, nice to see a thorough breakdown on how much badminton players earn. And as far as I've seen from the video, it's not that easy becoming a professional badminton player, keep it up, you guys are the best! Also, it's quite sad to see that other sports pay so much better salaries to low ranked players than higher ranked players in badminton. Hopefully one day badminton will get the same attention like the other sports in the future.

Look players in india earn a lot of money. Just look at neeraj chopra he won india 2nd individual olympic gold and first olympics atheletics medal . And his brand value increased by 20 times now .😂😂😂😂.

I love this kind of transparency. Especially useful for up and coming players who need to convince themselves or their guardians to pursue this life.

Probably the most insightful badminton video for any young aspiring badminton player there is out there. The most surprising part in my school life was that sindhu studied in the same school. She was 5 year’s junior and we realized that after she won Olympic silver.

You are consistently the only channel I leave comments on. You guys are simply amazing. Factual, yet super accessible and friendly. Love your channel and have watched many of your videos. If I could make a suggestion, if there’s players like me getting back into badminton after some years away from the sport, some basic breakdowns of even just the core shots would be great. I watched your forehand video and it’s great but wonder if you could find or use footage of people sending you clips if they are okay with you using them where you could analyze their swing. I know you offered that service on your website as a whole match analysis but I was more wondering about individual shots examples. For me, I’ve lost some of the techniques where I feel like I don’t generate enough power even on the clear nor smash and it would be great to see examples of players following you that you could us to illustrate how to hit proper shots. Sorry for the rambling post but keep up your amazing work. So happy you guys are creating all this content.

What an informative post!! You did great research as usual. Surprised and sad to know that elite badminton players are earning much less than Premier league footballers or tennis players. Expenses are too much for lower ranking players and cannot expect sponsorship money for their tournaments. How do you expect the earning of the badminton players in the near future? Your channel is so good. In every technical badminton video, there is so much to learn. My advice is to start analysing more games of players across the world. More indian players content please.

I really admire players like you too. As I knew most of the players from my contry don't need to care about the spendings. After retired they can find positions in government. For badminton players in England, it's hard to make money like footballers and tennis players. But there are still players like you two keep fighting and received such a good performance. Wow.. this is really insightful.. Although the top players make really good money, the lower ranked players below rank 32 really play for the love of the game than earning a good living. With all the sacrifices of time and other career and finding a spouse, we really salute all you great badminton players performing throughout the year and giving us so much enjoyment. thanks all you great players and hope that you will be blessed with many good things in life.

Makes me feel a bit sad seeing how much less top players of badminton earn compare to other sports 😢 I feel like there is so much untapped potential when the players have to do part time jobs to fund their careers.

thanks for the great insight! personally, i feel that badminton players should be rewarded more due to the hard work they put in. badminton is definitely not an easy sport and players are definitely underpaid. but i hope that in the future, badminton could get more recognition around the world as a remarkable sport and hopefully lead to an increase in prize/sponsorship money. great video!

unfortunately players of any sport don't get paid for the hard work that they put in, they get paid for the viewers that they draw. badminton is popular only in southeast asia (low income countries) so sponsorships and ads don't pay as well as tennis (popular in high income countries) even though badminton is played by more number of people.

Don't remember the numbers correctly but Lin Dan was 35 million income over time while LCW made about 70 million .. due to advertising of course :)

Guys, thank you so much for this video - I always wondered what are the earning rates in badminton. Money is not everything as long as you do what you love! Personally I love many sports! I've loved playing football, baskeball and now badminton (all on recrational/amatour level) and can't imagine living without sport and I think that this is the most important... I love your channel - keep up the good work. I can't imagine one of you delivering pizza though :)

I hope you guys will come to France for 2024.🍀 Idea - I would love to see guest interviews from the ENG team and/or other high level players! I think your dialogue makes it work.

Very nice video about the monetary side of a badminton player. One interesting thing that I found from Japan’s national team and players is that they have company teams that sponsor them with the national team for international tournaments. And if they decide to retire or not haven’t a lot of participated tournaments in the season due to circumstances, they can work for their company at least to get make a living.

A very informative video highlighting the greater rewards for those at the peak of the game. If English players are going to return to that platform BE will need a thorough overhaul. The engagement of Morten Frost is a good sign, but only if he has the authority and clearance for a root and branch restructuring of people and processes.

Amazing video. Really helped me. But what about coaching?

Congrats to this video, I hope this will get a movement started! Unfortunately it is the image of Badminton that needs to be fixed as the percetion is very often "casual, recreational activity with friends in the garden". Being the second-most popular sport in the world, only after Soccer, it is selling way behind it's full potential. Thanks to you guys we now have excellent material to start infiltrating the masses :-)

Another super enlighting video. Is there a big differential between Europe and Asia players (Sindhu and TTY being stellar obviously)? I would expect there would be considering the popularity gap of the sport between the continents…

It was reported that the Indonesian WD Olympic champions got land, houses and even a business retail shop after their win (can't remember exactly if that's accurate though)

Well of course the fame of winning in Badminton tournaments are way bigger in Asia than Europe But Europe are often way more expensive than Asia - well not sure about Taiwan or Hongkong :)

Very interesting! It feels like a cultural shift is needed for the sport to see any significant increase in money for players. If you live in a high income society, outside the top 32, there's really no financial incentive to pursue badminton.

The prize information, although public, are mostly scattered across the web. Thanks for gathering them and providing your own insight on top of the numbers. Considering how popular badminton is, compared to tennis, it really doesn't do justice for the prize money. Could it be related to badminton being more of a "National sport" than an individual sport, like tennis? btw, "Tsang" has a tricky pronunciation, and its not the same as tang😉

Tennis is historically a rich man sports like golf which also attracts huge sponsors and media coverage. Badminton has become an asian sport, and is not all linked to the white rich people of Europe and the US. The same goes for table tennis

Yea, this is unfortunately true. Hopefully the success of Axelson/Marin can raise the status of the sport in europe. [U.S. has basically no hope...]

A family friend of ours "worked" for the military, but all he did was play badminton at a high level. I dont think that structure exsists anymore, but it was apparantly how athletes of lesser-paying sports were supported in this country for decades. thanks for the video. Im just going to stick to my dayjob as a teacher and play badminton for fun :D

Everyone loves their sports and everyone needs money. That is truth :)

I can provide some examples from the players I know. In China, some provincial team players(ranked 200+) do part-time jobs as badminton coaches. Their individual courses usually take 300-400 RMB per hour(which equals 50-66 $). Every weekend they can earn 600-800$ with their part-time jobs.

This might help me get better at it

Iam a professional badminton player .. it is very useful for me to know about the earning to budget my career...

I've also heard that for some countries in the past, they may pay a pension or reward for players that bring home podium finishes at major tournaments/events like Olympics.

Also one more thing to note here is the value of the amount of money they make differs in different country (Purchasing Power Parity).

This is very insightful, thanks. The numbers read terrible and it's a courageous career pursuit. The coaching and logistics cost more to get to top 50 than the revenue.

This is my view, this depends on country to country. In India, most of the Badminton players within top 100 ranking are well to do and they have sponsors these days unlike 10 years ago. Time is changing and we will see changes in Badminton too. Huge fan of badminton, I wish this happen soon in future.

In China, national team players get paid from country so they are not worried about their living or training at all. Players retired from national team can easily find jobs in badminton academy or universities because badminton is very very popular in China.

Don't certain countries offer big extra bonus for winning big tournaments like world champ and Olympics? I'm sure I've seen Indonesia do it, and some others like Singapore for Loh (publicly funded though).

In terms of coats, what about training costs? Gym usage, players, coaching, supplies?

One thing I learned... Badminton needs to get more popular ;/ . I love badminton and hope there's more attention to it in the future, thank you for trying to make it more widespread!

Another differential with Tennis is that in badminton, singles, doubles and mixed get the same prize money, which is muvh more inclusive of different disciplines than tennis is where it’s all about singles. And that regardless of the fact that not that long ago prize money for women were far lower than for men…

Viktor is with the World Tour Finals win, $400.000 plus. In a way I had hoped Ginting would get the money because I think he needs them the most! But apart from that, I wonder how Axelsen will do next year and who had the confidence to challenge him. Can he stand the pressure from Kodai, LKY, the Indian players etc! He showed he is not unbeatable, but maybe he can up his game again and hold the contenders of again! Going to be very interesting! Thanks for the video guys!

I think Axelsen is amazing! Because he has this pressure from ton of Asian players In Denmark 360.000 active badminton players are registered. That's just a percentage of Asian players in every single country ;) BUT mental training is imperative at this level and Axelsen makes the most of it Saying that .. I prefer watching / playing doubles / mixed .. but I think everyone who train fights wins but also loses deserves our respect! because it's often harder than anyone's day job.

This is really a nice thing to know. Also, yeah PV Sindhu earns big. India has big pockets😅😅. Speaking of India, would we get to see you playing the India Open in New Delhi?

lucky for you that both of you are intelligent and likeable…and most likely figured out that this channel will help you financially more than anything. but yeah, the money below 32 is really really bad…given that it is such a hard work, you are amongst the bestin the cou try and the world and have dedicated to it your entire life….makes me always f furious when I see some wanker bankers who believe they deserve six figures for pressing buttons…..and yeah, this video earned a sub from me.

Very informative. The income from playing badminton is worth a lot more to a player who lives in a country with a lower standard of living and vice versa.

I saw somewhere Badminton has more "in play" time than a Men's tennis match. It's a sport that can be played (at recreation & club level) fairly inexpensively and something I look forward to enjoy till my limbs cannot move. However, it is a shame that there is not much money for a pro. It's hard to make it a career, esp. given that most of the revenue streams dry up by mid-30s. What's the reason? It's such a beautiful, fast game. Has enough thrilling minutes per game. A few breaks to sneak in commercials. Asians love it (ergo: more people & hence commercially should be attractive). Why? Why Why?

It is not spectator friendly as tennis. In tennis, spectators are right next to the court but very strange that badminton courts are sort of isolated from crowd. There is no variation in badminton, all indoors, same surface. Tennis has various surfaces, you need more skills to succeed on all surfaces. It is played both indoors and most importantly outdoors too. Tennis is famous in richer countries. Tennis has perhaps richer history then badminton, iconic players iconic matches. Badminton is too short to earn TV money.

51-100 could make decent money teaching old people classes in my experience. For those that charge low they can get class twice each day if they play in big public hall with tons of casual but dedicated players. Also I think the number is way too low if you move to rich but low ranked countries for example. My friend ranked 30 something and 50 something and they managed to buy a few homes (yes even the 50+ guys) in Indonesia by moving to a weaker country and becoming part of their national team. Unless you mean ranked 50-100 in the country and not international

Regarding national leagues, obviously a lot of this is going to be hearsay, but for many asian countries, the domestic amateur league can get pretty brutal. I once heard a friend tell me when he went back to china to play in one of these leagues, he saw Bao Yi Xin playing. This was after she already retired from international badminton. The word on the grapevine was that the charge out rate was something like 100k RMB, though I wasn't sure if that was a daily or rate for the entire league. Obligatory take with a huge grain of salt, but I don't think this is entirely unbelievable.
