How much horsepower has our V10 BMW M5 Touring lost in 15 years?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Check out our new DriveTribe merch here: bit.ly/DTmerchYT
With the DriveTribe E61 M5 Touring recently given a full bill of health, Mike decided it was the best time to whack the car on a dyno to see how much power its 5.0-litre V10 is still creating after 15 years.
How much horsepower do you reckon it'll make? 🤔

Despite letting the car climb the roller which actually inflates the figure on a Dyno Dynamics..... The total inertia of the dyno is reduced when the wheel loses contact, the software doesn't know that's happened still calculates the power under acceleration with the total inertia of the drive roller, inertia roller and transmission.. Our dynos (mostly engine dynos and a LOT of them) all had to be calibrated when ISO9000 came to be. It was a struggle to get the departments to shut down long enough for the calibration, but they had no choice with ISO9000. I don't dare say how far out some of them were, and nor do I dare say where I worked.

@@TheChris91173 It's nothing to do with forced induction, it's been a thing basically ever since engines became electronically controlled, think about it old school purely mechanical engines lost power over time for sure because they had a fixed fuel flow rate, timing, etc but electronically controlled engines, even N/A ones can measure fuel quality, temperatures, knock etc and adjust things to maintain the power they were designed for as long as nothing's too damaged or worn out in the system. Technically there's a grain of truth in what you say as forced induction gives the engine one more thing to use to adapt to different conditions but it's not the turbocharging that's allowing for that, it's the fact that everything's electronically controlled and working together.

BMW maintenance and parts may be expensive, but they have produced some of the most reliable cars in history. I loved my 316i from 2000. I inherited it from my father and without much maintenance at all it would still top at nearly 210 km/h nearly 20 years after it was produced. That's quite decent for a 1.6 liter engine, I think! Other than that they are just such classy-looking cars, comfortable and a joy to drive. Of course I am biased, because it was my first car.

@@Stettafire Whats the fun in that though? You get more fun stuffing the biggest engine in the smallest car you can find. Even if you dont break any land speed records with it, you'll have a lot more fun building and driving it then some super car that cost 500x more Speed isnt everything. Its how you use it. Search youtube for a guy who turbo charged an old 1L ford fiesta or the people who are K-swapping honda engines into old mini's. Theres even a dude that had a Mk1 or Mk2 Golf thats all held together by a rollcage that has something like 600-800hp going around the Nürburgring Nothing wrong with getting more omph out of what you got, Thats what the fun is all about.

I had an Eventuri on my E90 M3. £800 of perfection in carbon which made the V8 growl even harder. The Eventuri products are such high quality, super expensive mind but if you can afford them they’re well worth it. E60 carbon plenum will be what £2k?

Without a graph from 15 years ago from the same dyno, on the same settings, in similar weather conditions nobody knows how many you've lost. Could've been 40hp above or below rated figures after attempting to convert for drivetrain losses.
