BMW may have been late to the SUV party 20 years ago, but ever since the first #X5 came out, it really started a crazy SUV trend over at #BMW. To see just how much the #BMWX5 has changed over the years, we got a hold of a 2001 X5 to see how its held up over the years and what exactly the key changes are compared to the all-new 2019 X5. Special thanks to Jake from Out Motorsports for allowing us to borrow his 2001 X5 3.0i.

It's kinda tricky to judge older BMWs because a lot of the refinement and driving feel depends on the bushings and mounts. People usually don't maintain those and the driving difference between a car with old tired bushings/shocks and new bits is pretty damn noticeable. This also applies to classic cars, to an extent

The first gen 4.6is models were my favorite of the X5. Great handling for an SUV but throw on some winter tires and they were also beasts in the snow. The older M62 motors were quirky but once you looked into the VANOS system and cooling system issues under the hood was pretty solid. Also, can't forget the gauge cluster pixels going out.

Ok don’t get so upset. I’m just stating the facts. Cars today are unnecessarily complicated with too much tech and styling that has become generic and cartoonish at same time. You guys seriously think that the front gigantic grill in new BMWs or many other brands looks “good”!! I have owned ,not leased,4 BMWs in my life e46 328i, e46 330i, z4 M coupe and now my current f22 m325i. This current car will be my last BMW. I will buy another new e46 or e39 BMW if BMW started making them again. Otherwise I’m keeping my last Bimmer until it dies. Then I don’t know what I’d get. Nothing out there is appealing with current generation of the cars coming out.

Have had a 2006, 2014 and now a 2019. Each has had the same general driving dynamics. Power train is better each time. The 19 is remarkably quick, but each newer one has a bit of "cheapness" and quirks. The newest has only a cloth screen as the roof cover, and only a VERY small opening sunroof. Only the front portion opens. The newest rides and handles better. It is also quieter. The older one had a better cubby for a small amount of change or garage door opener. the newer one has better availability for charging, but every time I start it I have to change the radio to the "presets". It will not stay on "presets" for the radio. The rear seats do not move, but the older one did. Lots of pluses and minuses but overall I am enjoying the new ride.

The new X5 is so gorgeous. Beautiful design. The old one is old. Doesn't appeal to me.

That 2001 BMW has an owner that doesn't really give a shit lol. Shame cause I've been in them and they're really nice cars for how old they are

Current owner here - I bought it in June and it was a one-owner car from 2003 to early 2019. It's amazing how some folks will keep it up (ish) mechanically but ignore all cosmetics. It was super gross when I bought it and what you see in the video is after an 8 hour cleaning session. I would LOVE a nice 4.8is by comparison!

3.0i is reliable, but never get a BMW as a first car. I’m order to maintain a BMW you need the premium gas and the proper oil, there’s no cheating out on BMWs, if you do which most people do.. then reliability problems are going to kick you. And when things break, it’s expensive, don’t get expensive mixed with reliability. Most BMWs are reliable, just expensive when you screw up. If you want a first car get a Honda or Toyota - anything lowered because you’ll get to cheap oil on oil and gas. BMWs are expensive. Do not buy one, this goes for Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, and Range Rover.

As owner of '14 X5 i have to say that i love mine. But, my kids hate no rear reclining seats for long trips. Depreciation is huge which sucks for such expensive vehicle.
