I am trying to do a bit of both. I raise registered Red Wattles. I register only the top out of the litter, sell some as feeders, and feed out the rest. I have a pasture with some walnut and hickory trees, and they have access to our 1880's barn. I just sold some at $4 lb hanging weight, with the buyer paying the processing. The processor I go to I haul them 2 hours each way to because he does such a good job, and there is such selection on what you want, flavors, types of sausages, etc. I do raise ours until they are about 8 or 9 months old/ 325 or so hanging weight. The meat looks about like beef and is just very well marbled, and has a nice sweet/rich taste. It just shocks people.

Thanks for the comment! I can’t get $4/lb hanging weight plus processing. Good job! They are definitely worth it. I had been getting $3/lb hanging plus processing, but I am finding my customers don’t really understand the process and are overwhelmed with the cut sheets. I am moving to a price per pound hanging weigh for standard processing that includes all processing costs. Hope to have better luck with that!

They taste better if they live better. Also, get into grocery stores that want to reduce their waste, or partner up with farmers markets. I supplement my chickens and pigs with both. It's a win win for the establishments because you help reduce what goes into the local dump and they don't have to pay someone to sort.

How much a month per feeder pig does it cost to feed each pig ?

It's not the same monthly amount for the duration of the feeder pigs life on my farm, as the amount of food they consume per day goes up as they get bigger. I can tell you the price has close to doubled due to increasing feed costs. When I first get the feeder piglets they are consuming 2 to 3 pounds each of food per day. By they time to get to their processing date, that amount is around 7 pounds per feeder per day! For me, with feeding free-choice feed for the life of the feeder, each pig will consume around 900 to 1,000 pounds of feed from weaning to processing (7 - 8 months of age). Hope this help! Thanks for checking out my video!

With a big feeder like that you should be getting bulk feed. It is cheaper.
