How Much Does It COST TO LIVE ON A HOUSEBOAT?

This week's Deep Houseboat Life video is the third video in our houseboat buying series. The first video, we shared 3 tips when buying a houseboat to help you find and buy the boat that’s right for you. In our second video, we introduced a houseboat budget tool to help you estimate the cost to BUY a houseboat.
In this third video, we’ll pick up where we left off in our second video, diving further into the houseboat budget tool to show how we’re estimating the cost to LIVE ON and OWN a houseboat for our first year. At the end of this year, we’ll do an update on what our actual costs to own and live were for the first year living on a houseboat on Lake Lanier.
If you missed our first video on the cost to BUY a houseboat, that’s OK. To catch you up, we view houseboat buying and owning costs as different, yet critical to think through before buying a boat. Figuring out the potential costs to buy and own a houseboat is something we’ve been researching and planning against our budget for a long time, and isn’t a decision we made last minute.
And buying a houseboat is the easy part. It’s like the saying goes: “the two happiest days of a boat owner's life are the day they buy the boat and the day they sell it.” We think that’s mostly because the boat buyer doesn’t have an accurate view of how much it costs to buy and own a houseboat.
So we want to share with you THE ACTUAL TOOLS we used to estimate the potential boat buying and ownership costs to see if we could afford houseboat life and houseboat expenses on a budget. Hopefully this will give you a more accurate view of what it takes to own and live on a houseboat and houseboat costs, and will give you tools to make it happen, too.

Hey GA neighbor! It’s nice to meet you, Stef, and thank you so much for watching our video. Glad you found it helpful on your journey to finding a houseboat. Are you looking at Lake Lanier? We also looked at Lake Allatoona, as that’s another houseboating lake. Different vibes on each lake, and both great choices we think!

Hey man, thanks for watching the video. Means a lot to have your viewing support. We wanted to be transparent, and hopefully helpful, about what people are really getting into with a houseboat - that it's more house than boat, especially when you account for the slip fees. That's why a lot of people end up living on their houseboat full time in certain parts of the country. If I didn't already have a lot of houseboating experience and knew we would enjoy it, we would have for sure gotten a smaller houseboat with cheaper slip fees or gone with a cruiser that's more affordable to ease into the lifestyle. What's nice about the worksheet in our video is that you can use it to figure out boats in your price range, whether it's more or less expensive than the example we gave. Hope to see you out on the water one day!

Here in San Diego my daughter is buying her first home. The one bedroom, one bath, 650 sq. ft. Condo is $450,000. Others are competing to buy it. He mortgage, insurance, HOA, and tax are $2,450/ mo. You get a lot more for your money with that boat.

@@jamesscott1932 After my spouse died and my kids and I had to sell the house, this seemed like a dream option. Now, my new life almost screams for it- we are sooo ready- we hope! I had been in California- couldn't afford to buy there and wound up in Oklahoma- learning to go from 7K a month to 2K a month has been a hit but this has started to look like a real option for us- hopefully I am right- Otherwise we will have to go back to renting! Who wants that!!!

Hi there, greetings from not-so-sunny-Northern-Ireland once more :-) Just a quick question; In your budgeting tool, you highlight oil change as an obvious engine maintenance item, but is that the only annual engine and systems maintenance required? Do the engines themselves not need servicing annually, and are there no other systems maintenance requirements? Once again, great series of videos and very informative.

Hello and welcome back! It was a rainy Monday on the lake for us, but we were able to get out for a bit between rain showers. There could be other items that come up (like replacing the impeller, fuel filter changes) depending on how much you run the engines. Glad you found the budget tool very informative, and we plan to add to the budget tool and update the video in early 2022 once we have another years worth of data. Hopefully that update will clarify in more certain terms what we encountered this year with engine maintenance.

Hey, Ernest! We appreciate hearing from another Lanier local. The liveaboard rules at marinas in Georgia are a bit vague. Though from what we’ve read and have talked about with other seasoned liveaboards, the rules here are more geared towards the coastal areas and are meant to protect the water ecosystem from dumped waste. Looks like a person can now liveaboard in GA coastal waters for 90 days, extended from 30 days, which should help bring more loopers through GA coastal towns. When it comes to freshwater lakes, it seems to just be up to what the marina will allow. Man, my wife and I REALLY want to do either part or all of the loop one day. That is awesome you are working towards getting a boat. It is possible! Are you thinking houseboat or trawler? And the goats and dogs…super cool. If you got a houseboat, they will love that top deck. We actually have a question for you…do you have any experience building battery boxes for houseboat inverter batteries? Ours doesn’t have a battery box and we’d like to get one before replacing our inverter batteries, which are way dead.

Just say NO😆 All of the maintenance of a house and of a boat all rolled up into one big headache. Just rent a cabin near the marina and rent whatever kind of boat you want and save about a hundred thousand dollars in your life time.😆
