    By the way, if you're wondering why Sarah was so keen to go and take her clothes off at the end its either- A) Because we filmed this on the hottest day of the year so far 😅😎 or.... B) She's a frolicking naturist We watched this back and realised it wasn't very clear, so draw your own conclusions 😂😂😂

    It's always interesting to hear a new perspective on moving here: I first moved to the Islands nearly 20 years, so it's easy to lose perspective. I do need to point out that the amount of council tax that you are paying is in no way representitive: for a three bedroom house, it would normally be about 3 times that. I can't speak for your locality, but I imagine that the valuation on your property is either incorrect or has not been revised in many, many years. The council tax on even a small apartment would normally be more than you are paying. Still a lot less than in the UK though!

    I think Antigua last did a municipality wide appraisal in 2002. We’ve reported works done and had a one off bill to pay based on licence and building costs but IBI has stayed the same. It seems to be in line with neighbours bills in the same village too so who knows 🤷‍♀️ As you say though, even if it trebled we would still be a lot better off vs UK 👍

  • @AmeliaBolger

    @AmeliaBolger

    3 жыл бұрын

    It’s difficult to say an average price as I believe some communities include utilities with theirs. Could be anything from €50-150/month but I think the most important thing is to find a community that is well managed. Look closely at how things are maintained and get the person handling the conveyancing to go over the accounts and make sure they look ok. Some communities have really struggled with managing non payments and absent owners.

  • @AmeliaBolger

    Jobs are the tricky thing here. Mostly linked to tourism which has obviously taken a huge hit. Unfortunately lots of people currently unemployed. There are no English speaking schools here so children have to integrate into Spanish immediately. From people we’ve spoken to that seems to be a good thing as children adapt quite quickly, although probably easier if they are primary school age.

    I don’t think there’s any way around the non-resident banking charges unfortunately. They’re such a rip off but was only able to get rid once we were residents. €75 for filing taxes does seem to be the going rate, I’ve seen others charging up to €100 so I don’t think that’s too bad for the peace of mind that it’s been sorted for you.

    Hello ladies, Excellent summary and a good understanding of the costs which I'm sure will appeal to interested people considering a change of lifestyle on a permanent basis. And it gives us all food for thought most definitely. Four quick questions please.. Firstly what are the agents fees when purchasing through them or even renting through them? And secondly of course what are the lawyers fees in respect of a purchase? And finally a curious question about the land should anyone be interested in a purchase, who owns the land the property sits on and its boundaries, is it freehold, leasehold etc?. Certainly from a health and lifestyle view point coupled with general cost of living it's a no brainer, but did you give any thought to risks re a tsunami or earthquake and would insurance cover those scenarios.. again more curious about your views on this than trying to deter people on the prosperity of any move.. Thank you once again for the coverage, take care. Regards Ian x

  • @AmeliaBolger

    @AmeliaBolger

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Ian, 1. No fees for purchasing via an agent, they get their fee from the seller (sellers pay 5-6% here so more than the UK). Pretty sure its the landlord that covers admin costs with rentals too but you'd need to put down a security deposit. 2. They say you'll need an additional 10% on top of the purchase price to cover all your legal fees and purchasing costs. We found it ended up being 9% for us so not far off. 3. Very important to get good advice on this. There is something called 'nota simple' that confirms ownership of land. Usually freehold unless they're on an apartment complex. Person handling your conveyancing also needs to make sure all paperwork is in place to confirm its a legal build with all the correct licences and permissions. Apartments will have a service charge or management fee and its important to make sure the books are in good order as some run up huge debts that are hard for the community manager to recover. That can obviously affect the general upkeep of the complex. 4. I did look at earthquake and tsunami risk and its very low. There is some seismic activity under the ocean South West of El Hierro but doesn't seem to affect their island directly. We did plenty of research and really the only disadvantage to living here is if you need to work as the salaries are low and job opportunities largely linked to tourism.

I very much appreciate from both of you the guidance you've given to all the aspects of life on the island, it's refreshing to listen to you both on all subject matter which is always extremely well balanced. You certainly made the right decisions on leaving your careers behind you and leaving the UK, and found that your lifeskills provide a safe and secure future for you. Love the videos! I'll be coming to Fuerteventura in a month, which place do you recommend staying if you love hiking and beaches? Is corralejo still the best, or would something central be better?

    It depends on what you are looking for!! In these time of the year, in the north some times is a bit cold. In the south always at least, 2 or 3 degrees higher. But I like more Corralejo, even If it is a bit colder. If you want to go for a excursion...Lanzarote, Cotillo, Puerto del Rosario.. You have more places yo visit. And the sand dunes of Corralejo is amazing!! This my personal opinion, of course!! I am a Spanish from north if Spain. But I lived in the south of this island for four years and I am living in Corralejo for 20 years ago. I just wanted to give a different point of view to help you.

    Very informative guys, personally I think we're being ripped off over here in the UK but hey-ho, swings & roundabouts. So, can I pose a question? How is brexit going to effect people like yourselves who have chosen to up-sticks and live elsewhere? Do you envisage changes of any kind? Is information on such things open & transparent?

    Your healthcare insurance is very reasonable seeing as for both of you, the comvenio especial would cost 1440€ per year Just one thing I wanted to mention and I don't mean to put a downer on it but sadly it's reality.....now the UK has left the EU the immigration criteria is that a of a third country national hence you need an income whether via work or a passive income of 4xIPREM which is generally mentioned...4xIPREM = 25,800€

    Yes residency requirements have of course changed since we did it. As you say, at the moment it’s pointless paying more for convenio especial when we get access to private healthcare at a cheaper cost. Will see how things go but we’re actually paying slightly less now than we were 2 years ago!

    It doesn't. We found some companies say its included but when you look at the small print its not worth having. Our first provider said it included 1 check up and then some discounted treatments but when we checked the list to see where the dentists were there wasn't any in Fuerteventura just Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Easier to self insure the dental side and pay as you go!

    Hi Amelia and Sarah, thanks for this very useful video!! I'm following you from Italy, all of your videos are always very interesting. My husband and I are thinking about moving to Fuerteventura as early retirement as you did, we know the island well and appreciate the slow living. I have a question about the private health insurance. Which company do you use? I've been searching for info and prices online but I'm not sure which company can be reliable, there are so many! Just to have an idea. Thanks in advance!

    Hi girls Very informative and interesting. We found a villa 8 years ago and worked out living costs then similar to yours but before we could go through with it all my husband became very ill and is still having on going treatment so our dream of living on fuerteventura is just a dream now😪. We have to make do with holidays there every year . Which we are not getting at the mo. We went with goldacre at the time also nicholas tan ! They were very helpful. You didnt mention clothes expenditure? . Also what is a typical day like for you both eg what you have to eat for the whole day ,what you do ? . Stay safe and well girls 🥰

    I decided not to add clothes expenditure in as wanted to keep it more to day to essentials. We don't spend much on clothes as it's not something we feel we need to anymore. I think after going from wardrobes full of suits and labels in the UK its been really refreshing to go minimal. We pick up a few items when we go to the US as the selection and prices are really good but here we seem to live in tshirts, shorts and flip flops 😂 I hope you'll get to come back out to your villa soon. I'm sure you're ready to escape!

    We used Sanitas for the first 2 years and now use Caser. Both have websites where you can get a quote and deal with an English speaking advisor. We found it much cheaper going to the companies direct rather than through a third party who needs to collect commission. All of the doctors, clinics and hospitals are the same here no matter who you are insured with. We’d happily use Sanitas again but just found Caser were cheaper this time around. I’d recommend paying as you go for dental. We couldn’t find any dentists in Fuerteventura that were included on the private plans so not worth paying extra for it.
