Josh, We just had a company do the same at our farm just outside of Fayetteville, NC. We had around 10 acres multched. What I've learned from our experience is that you will want to leave enough space between the trees for bush hogging. Even with rye grass planted, saplings still seem to grow. This is something that I've been battling with this past summer. Farm is looking great man, keep it up!!!

I just got a bid of $4,200 to do an acre of brush in SE TN which is estimated to take 2 days. I paid quite a bit less 2-3 years ago for a similar amount of work. I don't know what to do. I know there are other mulchers because I've seen ads, but I can't find them online. Guess I'll keep searching.

The biggest difference for me is the head has its own pump system and the machine has its own. You see in the video where as he raises the are or hits a tree how much momentum he loses and has to wait to build back up. Keep doing what your doing, hope to see you get a stand alone machine like a fecon or cmi

I was quoted 150 per hour with a minimum of 5 hours. I figure my property needs about 10 hours or 1500.00 for the acre and a half of stuff so thick I can’t even walk into it without bleeding or itching for a week. If I can use that part of the property going forward I have increased the value of it many times over for me and my family. It’s a cheap 1500 bucks if it increases the value by making it useful again. Just another take that maybe some folks don’t consider when they see a price only.

Ha, not sure how long it will take. We did end up with a good amount of cedar, so thinking we could have a logger take that, make a little money, and pay for the rest to be cleared? I remember about 25 years ago back in 95 hired a guy with a small dozer to clear and pile 2 acres for me. He did an excellent job and I was happy. I burned brush for about 2 years after to get the land cleaned up and looking nice. I enjoyed all the burning but it was a lot of work and took a lot of my spare time. The ones who knew how much I paid for the clearing thought I paid double what it should have cost but not one offered to pay for the job. I am not complaining but I never tell anyone now what something costs. If you are satisfied with the job thats it. It aint no one else's money or bitness! I enjoyed the video!

Had I considered how much work it is to clear brush, brambles and vines I would've hired one of these guys. It didn't cross my mind until I was already on my second of 4 weekends and I only cleared a space about 30x200. Why did you decide on mulching vs knocking them down stacking and burning? I have a machine and have done brush clearing. With the roots left intact there’s not much stopping them from sprouting again no? With my machine I just pop the whole root system out with it and rake it with the teeth afterwards. Very clean and fast process. Not hardly any dirt in the piles. And can be worked almost immediately afterwards. I have a few videos on my channel doing it.

We had this done two years ago with the blade type machine, and I would recommend it for an area that is going to remain woods, but definitely not recommend it for creating pasture. The blade type machines are much faster, but make much larger chips. We paid $75.00 per hour -- but he raised it to $125.00 for other people in the area. It cost us $1,200 for two days. You are 100% correct about cleaning out the woods. We are doing the same and planting prairie grass and wildflowers to restore the oak savanna that used to be here. Much of the understory around here is just invasive species anyways, and looks terrible.

Yer way ahead dude. I was a LOT older than you before I learned how to 'pay to save time'. Learning to write checks to those 'pros' was TOUGH. But when I put emotion aside and just considered the math, it got easier. TIME is our most valuable asset. Money comes and goes, but time ONLY goes. I read once that Rockefeller LOST money just by pausing to pick up a hundred dollar bill off the sidewalk. Eye opener! My depression era Father STILL does things the hard way. He'll squeeze a nickle 'til the buffalo Chits....LOL. (I retired at 52. He's 84 and still works).

Amen sir. I learned this when I was a single dad raising two girls, working and earning a college degree. Instead of spending 3 hours mowing my yard every week, I paid a guy $40 to mow it every ten days. With proper equipment, he did a better job in an hour! Worth every penny.

@@alvon911 I almost married a coupon clipper who would drive back to the store to return 4 cans of tuna that she bought the week prior because it went on sale! I told her, I went to school to make 100K a year so I don't have do that. Same thing when we went traveling. I wanted to get a hotel at 11pm as we rolled into down for like $88, she wanted to keep driving to find cheaper, but I told her, we already been driving for a few minutes, 88 was was the cheapest so far, we aren't going to find much cheaper. Well, we drove around for 30 more min and wound up spending even more than $88. I was so pissed. Trying to save every dime is just not worth it.

during the depression there was very little money to buy or pay anyone. A lot of folks were glad to work and work hard for a chicken for daylight to dark work. Pork, beef, poultry, milk, butter and on and on was traded for labor. My grandpa had six jersey milk cows that not only helped feed the family but he sold milk and took things in trade for it. He also traded milk for labor. One time he traded some milk for some paint and all he could get was blue so everything on the farm was blue such as the house, barn, outbuildings and even the privy!

Seed out the silvopasture. Bring in old useless round bails in winter, and a greg Judy bale unroller. Spread it and let your animals stomp it in. This way many things happen simultaneously. Covers the bare soil to prevent erosion, saves seed cost, provides mulch for new growth to feed on, provides some animal feed in winter month. Cows can trample and mix and no labor on your part. Time is managed better. You can be off doing other projects. Love love animal laborers.

Wouldn't cutting the trees down with chain saw and letting him limb them and grinding the remaining stumps be better? This thing would work great for thicker brushy stuff(blackberry, vine maple, saplings) not so much the bigger trees. The second part looked perfect for that tool.

  • @macnudd
    @macnudd4 жыл бұрын

The thorns and briars will come back, so you will have to stay vigilant at cutting them back every year for years to get them under control. I would have expected more like 4k in cost. That is very expensive equipment and high maintenance too.

He wanted all of the shredded stuff gone so he had I guess a power raker come on and clean it up and there was a huge pile below the pond. Today, I spent 5 hrs cleaning it better with my landscape rake. I have been looking for a video on how you clear that shredded stuff up.

I know this video was made awhile back, but I just happened to come across it. Very well done, and very informative. Timing is interesting on our end. We just bought 4+ Acres in rural Oklahoma. The land is totally raw, and has probably never seen any mechanized equipment on it. It is so overgrown with scruboaks and brambles and all sorts of junk. We won't be able to escape from crazy California for a couple more months, but I'm already getting bids on thinning out the entire property and putting in a house pad of about one acre. The prices that I'm being quoted are in line with what are still listed in this video. It seems like the range that I'm getting is between $1,000 and $1,500 per day depending on what equipment is used. One company is about $1,800 per day but that's two operators and two different pieces of equipment, which sounds intriguing. Most are saying my land is a full 2-day job. This was a great video!

Great video. At about 8:20 seconds he is taking down a 4-5” tree. Can he mulch the trees faster if you go ahead of him with a chainsaw? If they are already on the ground and you leave him a 1 foot stump to level, is that a time savings? I’m with you and everyone else about getting the nasty brambles, but that tree was a super easy one for a quick chainsaw fall. He says 4 acres a day small material, or 1 acre larger stuff. I’m sure some folks will be interested in putting in some chainsaw time to maximize the acreage per day.

I hope you drug a couple of those pine trees down to the pond to place them on for a fish habitat and if placed correctly they would keep more trees and limbs out of the over flow inlet.

Ive been thinking about that for sure...cedars are what most folks use around here...I've gotta do a bit of research on placement of the trees to optimize fish colonies and not cause an issue with the pond later on

im sure the cedars are preferred in some respects because they are more resistant to rot, but i was thinking about what you hag on hand that could be considered a 3rd or 4th choice perhaps but since they were at 0 cost that might be #1 choice because of that and ease of use (it's right there). if you have any man made lakes in that area there are likely hard woods left in them for habitats because of rot resistance and you can fish easier around them easier than pine/fir/cedar.
