Hi Mark. I'm not a tradesman, but I am having a lot of work done on my house at the moment. If you quoted me £300 for that job, I'd think that was reasonable. Fully support local trade people. It's not like buying something that has been manufactured... you guys go into jobs and use your experience and knowledge to make things work. That's what we pay for 👍

Knowing your value is so important as as trades person especially a self-employed person. Not all plumbers are the same, we each bring our own set of experience and qualities/level of integrity to a job. If you are honest, know your stuff and are conscientious then you should charge accordingly. I don’t charge an hourly rate anymore and haven’t for a while… you don’t want to be punished for being more efficient! The changes we make to a property are there for many years… not 2 hours. If I ever feel undervalued before I’ve even started the job then I won’t do it. All the best to you all! Know your worth!

Would like to speak about my experience. I had a guy from same country as me and he gave me a quote for bathroom pipe work without Doing anything on walls and toilet. I wanted to exchange place of the bath ,sink and the electric shower. Also, to put a new towel radiator as replacing the old one . I wanted to keep the pipes as they are for the towel radiator and use elbow to connect it. He had to do extension of pipes and to connect the taps etc. He asked for £900 including all the pipes and stuff he needed. I found it quite expensive and decided doing it myself. I bought everything I needed for £230 and I found the installation quite easy and actually I am enjoying it. Thanks for the good videos and the information about prices etc.
realising Im charging too little for my skillbase I would have said £210 with materials, and hanging the rads in the process. I like your pricing I do bathrooms too I need to sort some more videos out. Great Video and thanks again for the knowledge. Derbyshire ...

As an estate manager for 50 properties in the south east UK I'd be biting your hand off to come and get the system up and running at that price (and be extremely thankful that I managed to get hold of a reliable tradesman). I would probably also accept a quote of £250 to do the rad/TRV installs and system fill, but have to accept a caveat of additional charges by the hour to rectify faults exposed on the system you had no direct influence on. Either way if you did the job, it would certainly be followed up with a case of beer as a thanks for getting me out a situation and to keep you sweet for further work! Great vid Mark :)

There are a large number of trades people who undervalue themselves, then it makes those that charge reasonable prices look expensive. Considering there is a shortage of trades people, then trades people really shouldn't be discounting their prices. I know good trades people working all hours, not because they hate going home, but because they need the money. When I've questioned what they charge, it becomes clear that they are undervaluing their skills and not charging enough. Some trades people are really good at what they do, but some are not so good at running a business.

On a big house now a days I fit a filling loop up in the loft by the tank and a gate valve . Turn off the gate valve to the tank , speed fit on vent and then turn on filling loop . Works every time . I was caught out on a huge job years ago and I was there for hours trying to full this system. For the time it takes to cut in a loop it's well worth it . Also if you work there again it's a nice thing to have in place .

Great video. I got a firm in few weeks ago to take a small rad off as all the pipe work is 10mm and made a pigs ear of the olive last time i done it myself. I drained the system before he came round. Told them I wanted it brass capped off. The guy turned up and said he doesn’t bother with olives and just hacksaws the pipe below. Then puts plastic caps on try’s to fill the system but both start to drip, so has to drain system again then can’t find 10mm brass caps in van and drives off for 40mins. Comes back puts it not fills the system…….£175! Based in billericay.

I've got the same kind of pricing structure with all the escorts around here. They give you a fixed quote of £100 for a pop, if you go after 5 mins you ain't getting a discount it's still £100. If you're still going hammer and tongs 90 mins later like me then it's still £100. Some you win some you lose but a happy customer means repeat business and you hopefully claw back your losses on the next shift. Karma and all that jazz.

Plus we have mainly sealed systems. Prices have since gone up and now its around $240.$250 call out and At least $140 p/hr I think $1 is equal to about 60p. Hi Marc. Great video. I'd go with £120 per rad then £50 for pipe, fittings and inhibitor etc. So £300 is about right 👏 . However, you would move into an hourly rate if they are issues post fill up. You can't price for what you cannot see or is outside of your control. I refused a garage conversion job once because the build quality was appalling. Those alarm bells starting ringing when I was asked to finish off all the plumbing and the shower room. Based on what I saw I walked away. In my game (Professional Services/Contracting) all work is either Time & Materials (i.e. day rate) or Fixed Outcome, the only way it can be done really as on average the short "money makers" make up for the long, unexpected "money eaters". Seems the same for people in the trade which makes complete sense, a lot of people just don't have any experience or knowledge of how non-salaried roles/jobs work meaning they think you're taking them for a ride!

Would be doing an air pressure test on the system before installing anything, if the original plumber didn't make all the connections the repair bill for any water leak would eat away any profit on the job. Its also a good condition of the quote so if it passes the pressure test job is x, if it doesn't then hourly rate to find and fix the original pipework then x to add the new rads.

Hmmm - lots to learn, then... But when I say £150 for the fully tiled bathtub tap change 40 miles away, customer says I'm too expensive. Float valve change: I said £30+parts as it was next door to another job - some kamikaze did it for £25. Solent area.

The priced job vs hourly rate bit was interesting: apart from anything else, as a sole trader, I suppose you've always got to consider how many jobs you can fit into one day/week, once you allow for the odd overrun and a bit of travelling, otherwise you've got people waiting in all day and then you can't make it. As a homeowner I guessed the rad job would be about three, with a caveat on anything arising when you come to refill. I paid about that for a rad move a couple of weeks ago. I dare say you could find someone who'd do it for less round here but I'd sooner pay the going rate than scrimp on a couple of quid and end up with a crap job.

Hi Mark, another great video. If I will do this job I will charge around £450 or more . I will explain why, you take a job from someone and you don’t have any idea what situation with the boiler and existing pipe work. £300 is Ok for this job, for two TRV and pipe two radiators with valves. BUT you need to test the system and the boiler and add the inhibitors after. Also don’t forget about the controller and thermostat if it’s work or you need to install the new one. If the costumer accepts the price is Ok if they not accepted the price good luck for them to keep calling for the previous plumber.

Very interesting video on pricing £300 is a fair price makes you think perhaps an hourly rate would be better as the system has not been tested not knowing what could go wrong some you win some you loose hope the job goes well

Thanks buddy….. I personally prefer price work but this job I’ve told the customer when filling of there is any issues then it’s extra…. Calculated
If I were the punter I'd like to discuss it with you and probably work on an hourly rate. Regarding the fill first or not I'd simply ask if it were your house how you would like to proceed with it. I just never understand why people don't put corrosion inhibitor in their systems.

Years ago I was a postman. People used to complain to me about paying less than £1 for posting a Christmas card from N. Ireland to England, I always told them to take a plane over, deliver it themselves - then see how the costs work out. Some people want you to work for nothing. 🙄
Well said Mark. I can tell you it’s the same in Holland. You earn one and you lose one

Extra radiators, youve answered a question for me here, I wondered adding more rads, do i need to change the flow and return to 22mm but you are adding to the existing 15mm so it must be ok, cool :) thanks

To be honest with you mate, given your experience with this customer I would hazard a guess the plumber not returning was more about the customer than the plumber. I would charge at my hourly rate and explain the possible issues you may find after piping up. These jobs can become a bloody nightmare tbh.

Yup I would say but with a proviso of anything either than filling the system and it working. I've just priced and got a replacement 1000 x 400 in a bay about 6m surface copper to put into the bay ground floor £375 inc materials, 3 people were called to quote and I've got it. I didnt price to get the job as wasn't that interested
