You would be very fortunate to find a good contractor with a good finished project in the 6-8/sf range. I am in the midwest and trying to get 3 contractors that will show up to an estimate and actually provide you with a price is like pulling teeth. The ones who follow through, provide a bid and are there when they say they will be seem to be at $12/sf and above.

Whether you pour concrete for a walkway or patio, a strong gravel base is required . Gravel is especially important in clay soil because it doesn't drain well, which results in water pooling under the concrete slab and slowly eroding the soil as it finally drains.

Thanks for the tips, this is very useful as we are preparing to get a concrete driveway. When I look at some other concrete driveways, I notice it looks like some have sort of chipped in certain places to create “dents” in the surface. It almost looks like it is somehow caused by larger stones of some kind just below the surface of the concrete as these are visible at the bottom of these imperfections. Any ideas what this is and how to avoid it? Thx!

  • @JJCentral-DIY

You are basically describing surface degradation or erosion. Getting proper concrete from reputable material supplier is key. Then make sure the slope is good and no water stagnates anywhere. Once poured and dry, soak the driveway for days to cure slowly. Avoid using salt for ice melting or any harsh chemicals to clean down the years. It should last you fro decades without degradation.

It certainly depends on the size and region. 380 sq ft is not that much so the price per sq ft will be slightly more than $5 per sqft based on general North East estimates. Your region may vary.

That is absolutely fine for a residential driveway. Most people just go with fiber mesh and that itself handles well. Wire mesh is a big plus, Rebar mesh would be even better if your driveway is going to see commercial trucks driving constantly on it.

Not recommended due to asphalt expansion that will crack the concrete. You need to remove the asphalt which is not that bad in comparison to removing concrete.

If you can’t afford to replace your driveway then you shouldn’t do it, be prepared that you get what you paid for and make sure they carry the mandatory insurances and license. What all you homeowners don’t understand, is that legit contractors have to pay a lot of taxes and GL, Auto and workers comp insurances which is very expensive! Min. $12sqft. to R&R a driveway.
