This is one dollar for every week that I got to spend abroad as a backpacker from 2022-2023, and it is thanks to your videos. It was a pipe dream to quit working and spend a year (solo) budget traveling, and I had no idea where to begin. I came across your video on how to plan a travel year, and crafted a monthly task list using your schedule. That assignment was the catalyst for...everything. Anxiety and lack of knowledge kept me from doing it for years, so I used your videos to materialize this dream. As a result, I had the best year of my life and I CANNOT wait to do it again. All thanks to you both!

This is so, so amazing to hear!!! We are so stoked about your trip, thanks so much for telling us! You did it! Congrats! What was your favorite part of the year?! Thanks so much for your support. your story keeps us going and wanting us to help others do the same! If you don't mind sharing, was there anything about the video that helped made things click? What helped more vs didn't help?

@@LisaAndJosh it must be so strange to be KZread "celebs," because my first reaction was !! They responded to me!!! 😂 I did 6 months in SE Asia (including Langkawi), two weeks in Bhutan to get off the backpacker trail ($$$ but worth it), two months in Germany to chill and stay with the boyfriend I met while traveling, then the last 2.5 months in Africa for an overland camping safari Kenya -> South Africa. It was way epic! I can't pick one highlight because there were superlatives in each place (i.e. island hopping in the Philippines, New years Eve in Singapore, everything in Bhutan, African sunsets, etc.) The most helpful aspect of that planning video (I think it's from 2021), is breaking the giant task down by monthly priority. It was way more manageable to plan a giant trip knowing all I had to do in Month 6 was renew my passport, for example. And it was an easy way to dip my toe in the water without making a giant commitment....but the more months and monthly tasks I accomplished, the more invested and determined. The "least" helpful, in my experience, were the cost expectations and the timing of medical appointments. Because it was post-covid 2022, and short staffing was a major issue, I couldn't get all my medical appointments in those last 1-2 months. I should've done that sooner. And, all of the vaccines I needed were $4k out of pocket from the travel clinic! The other post-covid phenomenon was price surges. All prices domestically and abroad went up. But also....you've seen my itinerary...I did more expensive trip segments than you did, so I blew through that $40k budget 😂😆 Other than those two details, I was able to follow your advice to a tee and it worked beautifully.

This is my first time leaving a comment on a YTV but wanted to say that your content is super inspiring, funny, and down to earth. Though my partner and I just got back from Japan--your videos have certainly tickled my travel bug again. Hi Lisa and Josh! I discovered your channel in the past 6 months or so while doing some travel planning and I really enjoy your content. :) I got some great ideas from your Italy and Japan videos! I'm a financial planner in the Montreal area, I get that it can be uncomfortable for some people to talk about their finances. I think what makes you both likeable is your honesty and transparency about what you like, and why you're doing what you're doing. You both just seem like really nice people. I would be surprised if anyone felt differently about you based on what you're earning. If anything, I hope for you that you're able to continue to increase your earnings as you expand your reach, so that you can travel full time and make more content for years to come. Cheers to your continued success :)

I've recently come across your videos and this was so invaluable for me to listen to. I just started my travel channel this year, and naturally, watch a lot of travel content. I usually watch vlogs to gain inspiration, but this behind the scenes stuff -- the finances, the lifestyle, etc -- was more enlightening by farrr. Not many creators, specifically travel, do what you are doing and you guys are so relatable -- I agree on so many things. I guess I am going against the grain by making a travel channel while still working my full time job. In order to do this, I am using my PTO (8 days only lmao) as strategically as possible to take several weekend trips around the year and then just trying to "milk" that content for as long as possible. For instance, instead of one video for a place, I am trying to make like 5 videos for each place. The hard part is, like you guys mentioned, is the exhaustion behind trying to fit so much in so little time when you do go on vacation. Anyhow, I appreciate your guys' perspective and realness. While it's an uphill battle for travel creators, I am trusting it's worth it in the end! Thank you for the transparency, I just subbed, and please don't stop making these travel support Thursday episodes!

Loved hearing more about your KZread journey in this video! I've been following you on my personal account for quite a while but wanted to say that I think it's so helpful to be transparent about content creation because it helps break down the misconceptions and expectations that people have about it as a job (especially the finances). My story is a little bit reversed to yours - I started my channel with the intention of eventually making enough money from it that I could travel with it as a digital nomad and this year have been able to start doing that! 🎉 Keep up the great content and congrats on the progress so far 😊✨🌷

Love your honesty and transparency. And... I love the Travel Thursday jingle. Ya gotta keep it! (Sorry Josh) 🤣 Best of luck with that Jetstar flight, they don't have the greatest reputation here in Oz, cancelling more flights than actually flying. I am more of the slow traveller, staying in a place 4 - 7 nights, which is what I did in Italy this year and it was amazing. But I totally get it when you have limited time. I lived and worked on cruise ships for 4 years (6-8 month contracts) and I loved it for many reasons. But, I'm sure living on a cruise ship would NOT include tours. I could do it for a year, but probably not more than that. PS. Are you visiting the Gold Coast?

Hi Lisa and Josh, I will live on a cruise ship for a 3.5-year cruise. I will be documenting my trip on my KZread channel, which will launch in March/April 2024 @Dr.V.Worldtravel

I used to help sell “world cruises” in my old job. They were way more expensive though… like 80-100k. It was nerve-racking processing those payments!

I've been currently watching the 9 month world cruise drama on Tik Tok and that is a definite no to a 1 to 3 year cruise! 😆 Also you'd have to pay loads of extras for excursions.

I don't think I could do 3 years on a cruise ship, but I think 1 would be an adventure. I'd probably do it if I had the time and money. I'm still a ways off from retirement, but my plan is to travel for the first few years after retiring. I could see doing a year on a ship at that time.

Guys! What happened to travel Thursday? I am getting on Spotify every week and not seeing a new podcast. They made me so happy.

You guys rock!! Please keep doing this series. If you start a scholarship or something to promote world travel, please let me know. I would donate toward that and towards you guys. I agree, travel will open up your mind. You both remind me of my husband and myself. We have been married since 2000 but we have kids so waiting for our youngest to start college and will be taking a “gap” year after that. Already planning 3 months in Asia to visit our home country, Laos.

I'm doing the travel card hacking thing now! I think I'm up to 10 cards! I have enough points for a free trip to Jamaica next year and almost enough Air France points for free business class seats to Europe! So fun!

I came across your videos because we did 2 Caminos, the Portuguese central and the Frances. I love Europe and we did 3 months in Spain, 6 weeks in Portugal, Greece, France and off to Italy for a month next April. We use airmiles for free travel and have 50,000 points. Where are we going after Italy? Not sure.

I have definitely considered/ am considering a cruise ship thing for my sabbatical. I just feel it would take a lot of burden off having to plan everywhere I want to go. Now I only did once cruise ship when I was a kid and have fun kid memories of it but have not done a cruise ship as an adult. So I probably need to go on at least one cruise before deciding. I am three years away from my Sabbatical goal time

This was a great discussion - don't worry, Josh, I thought the money part was well handled and offered a realistic look into travel content creation! One question for next week, maybe - when you were on your 1 year trip, you were on the road for months. Has this now changed to being based in Hawaii and venturing out as the flight ticket gods allow, or do you think you'll head out for a longer trip again? Which do you think is more cost effective? Happy Travel Thursday!

So do you cancel the credit cards after you get the points and apply for new credits? Also for that adversely affect your credit score?

Do you cancel your credit cards once the points are used? I have several travel cards but can't reapply and get more points. I'm running out of cards to apply for!

Thank you so much for being so open and honest for answering my questions. My wife and I found your videos during Covid and have enjoyed each one. Both of you seem so comfortable and natural in front of the camera now. I think the "3-5 Days in" series is some of your best content and I really enjoy the longer videos that give a complete experience/trip all in one video. I have even rewatched many of your videos! We wish you both continued growth and success of your channel so that you can travel for as long as you wish. Cheers! P.S. Please keep the Travel Thursday jingle

On the credit cards. How do you maneuver around not having too many with high annual fees? If you cancel a card do you lose the points?
