    SO few people in the UK (Compared to the US) discuss the actual details of their PhD Stipend and how they make it work. Thank you for doing so! Because it truly...is not a lot. Also skin and hair is 🔥 and I cannot get enough of the dulcet tones of your accent :)

    That is so true! There’s isn’t a lot of transparency about funding in the UK. I hope this helps others who are planning to do a PhD. Because In my first year I struggled quite a bit. I was coming off of a different scholarship for my MSc that was very generous and although I moved to an apartment that was £300 cheaper , I barely had money for emergencies. But we make it work. Thank you for the compliment ☺️☺️

    I came running to see this! Thank you Maria for the transparency although I’m in the same boat as being a fully-funded PhD student, this is going to help so many! 💜 I remember the stipend at UCL being far lower than KCL and Imperial for sure! But for sure depends on the department and school! But as you said it’s all about the process and you learn to do with what you have and become incredibly innovative with the budget. It must be a further struggle for those getting stipends every quarter 🙈

    I really hope it helps others 💕🙏🏽. It does vary quite a lot. And it’s interesting to hear you mention the difference between 3 London universities as well. I usually get my stipend quarterly! I forgot to mention that. Omg that just reminded me of the end of my first year when I had to move apartments and my deposit was tied up in one apartment and I had to pay a deposit + first month’s rent for the new apartment. Needless to say how much of a struggle that was... We surely come out of the PhD with a lot more than just the degree. So many lessons

    This was great! After the tuition and fees, my monthly stipend barely covers my expenses. Thank God for family! Additionally, depending on your major/specialization and school it can determine how much of a stipend you receive. Currently, my program offers grants and fellowships along with graduate assistant and mentor positions. Yet in still, I am online and many of my colleagues work while pursuing their degree. Tfs

    It’s tough and having the financial burden while undertaking an already challenging degree can put a big mental and emotional strain on you. The PhD can be such a lonely journey and add that financial strain where you feel like you shouldn’t go out so that you can pay your bills... it’s hard. But we learn so much from this journey right?!

    Hey! Are you Brazilian? I'm new here in your channel. I'm considering applying to an PhD at imperial college London. Is it usually hard to get a scholarship as a foreign student? Do they look at your student records from undergrad school or they just care about your masters grades? Is it possible to stay in London (working or studying) after you finish the PhD program? Can you become a permanent resident?

  • @NerdToFit

    @NerdToFit

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey! No I’m not. I’m actually from St. Vincent and the Grenadines. But I love Brazilian culture and food 😊 It can indeed be difficult to get a scholarship. But there are a few options. There are usually special scholarships based on nationality etc. You can check those out. I would say they assess all those grades. But it depends on the scholarship and programmes you’re applying for. They also really look for your skills such as research and time management, so it’s not entirely about the grades I would say. It is possible to stay. They’ve just started a new visa scheme that allows masters students to stay up to 2 years to look for a job and PhD students can stay for up to 3 years once completed.
