Minecraft SMPs are servers where a group of players band together to do some cool things. SMP stands for Survival Multiplayer.
They have been out for a long time, with many SMPs such as Hermitcraft featuring Grian and MumboJumbo, Dream SMP with Technoblade and TommyInnit or even the Lifesteal SMP with Clownpierce and Parrot dominating the landscape and going beyond what is possible in Minecraft. But overtime, Minecraft SMPs have changed. I've been wanting to document that for years, and here we are.

i do get that, after a while pvp just isnt so fun anymore, and it takes a lot of effort to raise the stakes, the gimmick gets old too, content smp is a relly good one thought, it has a lot of conflict, but it doesnt feel as forced, and the gimmick keeps it fresh and interesting and there are meaningful relantionships between the players, and its not all betrayers one after the other, but the newest season of lifesteal smp is pretty good on the storytelling department.

Players on smp live celebrated the wins from mcc 1, players such as Hbomb and Eret joined the Dream smp through MCC, Dream would of never invited them if mcc wasn’t a thing, one of the longest running server hermitcraft has many of their players in mcc and frequently mention it in their videos, hell Rendog put it on his skin for a while and in another smp (aka third life) his crown as the red king was the mcc crown, it had influenced another smp in a small way. Techno in the dream SMP perfectly balanced and represetned why everyone liked the Dream SMP. It was and shouldve been a story with bloopers breaking the plot and the streamers charachter. At one moment you would have a speech by techno and then he summons 2 withers...and then the withers said "subscribe to technoblade". You would have dream confronting techno for housing tommy and then techno would start reading donations randomly. It wasnt a grand story being it was a random plot beats that had perfect comedic moments that said "Yes this is minecraft and were having fun".

No one expected it to be that great and were just having fun. (Besides the most die hard stans.) I am VERY grateful for Hermitcraft... Its just vanilla survival in its purest form. There's no click-baity thumbnails, no fast-paced tiktok attention-span editing, there's basically no scripting. Its all (for the most part) spontaneous vanilla gameplay and player interaction (there was season 8 where they attempted a bit of a storyline, but that was a one-time thing that didn't catch on). Its just wholesome. While everyone is complaining about what Minecraft KZread has become, Hermitcraft has remained true to itself, not trying to chase after trends or monetization, its just simply a group of KZreadrs playing together and making videos about it.

If I ever make an SMP, it's gonna be slow-paced and not about trying to beat the game. It's gonna be more calming and enjoyable, who knows maybe modded too-! A smp that wasn't mentioned but was also very popular is a series called mianite. Predated smplive and was a live streamed series with roleplay. The impressive thing about mianite is how popular it was it was partially responsible for the first two streamers on twitch to receive 1 million followers (syndicate, then captiansparklez.) Omgitzfirefoxx became the biggest female twitch streamer and held that place for years during her time on the series. and when ever they streamed minecraft was the most viewed category on twitch . I even remember a few times where silly things that happened on stream hit trending on twitter. It might not hit the numbers that streamers hit now but, Mianite definetly feels like the precursor to like dsmp and life steal.

I like the premise of the video but I have a few criticisms: - I would recommend backing up from the mic when yelling because it sounds awful no matter how low I turn the volume. - This video I think does not properly express the longevity of Hermitcraft. While a lot of other SMPs burned hard and burned fast, Hermitcraft has been very careful to keep the series somewhat fresh without going so far as to alienate their viewers and as a result has gained a very dedicated and very happy fanbase. It feels more laid back than a lot of other series and I can guarantee that it is a hell of a lot less stressful for the members to participate compared to a lot of other modern series. This, in combination with the fact that the biggest drama in its history was incredibly tame in the grand scheme of things, I think has really contributed to its survival. And a not-really-a-criticism: The Hermitcraft members and co. sometimes host their own lifesteal-esque SMPs around once a year. The whole series is barely ever full on conflict until the very end and generally stays in the realm of tasteful and thoroughly entertaining mischief which some may or may not like but I really enjoyed.

ofc, things get old after awhile, it makes complete since you dont get the same excitement at plain vanilla minecraft the 100th time seeing it. the only problem is that the servers were focused on fun and friends back then, and now its all for fame and money. i'd get bored if i tried to rewatch all of these old smp's i used to love, but i still miss the culture back then.

honestly, near the end, talking about the lack of passion in the server, i remembered a spanish smp called EliteCraft, it was an amazing series that may come back, created by ElRichMc who also created PermaDeath some years ago (and a second season is "coming soon")

29:10 i think you can actually see a lot of tecnoblade's influence in newer creators, especially the parts were tecnoblade is doing something, and then it cuts to him explaining in a different world, and another thing, i think whats happening to smps is pretty much what happened before, what starts as a heart to heart interaction and fun ideas, them quickly becomes a content farm that aims for children's attention, which is what ended up killing minecraft before, which relly reinforces the cyclical nature of minecraft in my opnion.

Amazing SMP retrospective video honestly, even if you should have definitely talked about the later days of Hermitcraft and how it not giving up eventually DID pay off, with Seasons 6 & above becoming its very best and so on. _(Also, SMP overview with zero mentions of Grian? Damn)._ An interesting and thought-provoking tale of how long-running Minecraft series were born and killed... And how despite all that Hermitcraft managed to live and reach this modern day and age stronger than ever! Just like how I like to say... *Mindcrack walked so Hermitcraft could run,* and boy oh boy did Hermitcraft run indeed!

I've only seen one comment mentioning my favourite SMP named Mianite. It came before SMPLive and had scripted events like the DreamSMP did, though it was much more fantasy based. I watched CaptainSparklez perspective most of the time and I remember having to book it home after school because the stream started 10 minutes after school finished. That series was actually the reason I made a Twitch account. I'd seriously recommend it to anyone who likes the DreamSMP

Ngl I never liked the style of highly edit content nor the hardcore inspired plugins a lot of modern smps use. Hermitcraft is by FAR the best smp imo because it about their personalities, the shenanigans/pranks, and the builds. It just feels more like Minecraft
