How medication is tied to memory loss

Medicines can't prevent dementia. But they sure can cause it. Many common drugs being taken by millions of people are strongly associated with a risk of Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia. This is a concern for anyone, but especially for people with mild cognitive impairment.

Less pills to take, the better you will be. At 91 years old with heart problems, I take only 3 prescribed pills, Losatan for my cholesterol, Xralto for blood thinning and metoprolol uccinate for blood pressure and heart beat. I still have my cognitive ability, but my short term memory is not as good as I want it to be. All in all, T think that I an dong great. I can still drive better than most.

I have congestive heart failure and have noticed that I have developed severe memory loss while taking my medications, especially Aldactone. I cannot find anything about Heart failure or heart failure medications and memory loss, are you able to educate me on that at all? I am 30 years old and was diagnosed in 2014 with peripartum cardiomyopathy.

Full disclosure here. I am not a medical professional, and my work focuses on people who are older, and the impact medication can have on them. All I can tell you, very generally, is that for people age 65 or older, if they are taking heart medication, Aldactone is not one of the medications they are encouraged to avoid. In fact, it's offered as a possible safer alternative to other heart medications that may not be appropriate for them. Given your age and your situation, this is a question your doctor or pharmacists would be better suited to address for you.

That's a great question, and there's not a simple answer. To learn more, I'd encourage you to read this article: www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org/hometown-health/speaking-of-health/say-goodbye-to-springtime-allergies

    What about lamotrogine?

That's a complicated question, that can really only be answered by a medical professional who has examined you and knows your medical history. In the most general terms, lamotrogine is not particularly associated with bad cognitive outcomes. But please talk to your doctor about this.

Definitely something to talk to a doctor about. There is evidence that Xanax can inrease the risk of Alzheimer's in older adults. Here is the study, if you are looking for more info: www.bmj.com/content/349/bmj.g5205

This strikes me as click-bait. Vague statements that certain categories of drugs MIGHT lead to some type of dementia tells me nothing useful. You've basically listed a wide swath of medicines and offered no proof or credible studies as to which specific medications, if any are at high risk. And what those risks are likely to be. Please state facts and not just throw out suppositions geared to just alarming people.
