I feel like what could be deeper is if he only wished to die once...but that thought continued for many years, making it basically wishing to die "once" continuously

The number on their heads showed how many times they wanted to die and when deku came it hadn’t shown his number yet but then it did and it show it wanted to die 1857 times and that’s why everyone was shocked (sorry I’m not good at explaining)
