I read once a story about a famous spear master that was accused of having an affair with one of the wifes of a great empire's minister and found guilty by the emperor. The sentence for such a crime was prison for life. The emperor, knowing the reputation of the accused as the best master of the spear in the entire empire, decided to give him a chance: If he managed to defeat a platoon of 50 swordsmen soldiers alone in an arena, his crime would be forgiven. The spear master accepted the challenge. And in front of the audience of the arena, the fight left everyone perplexed, because even surrounded by the swordsmen, the master was doing very well and had already killed 20 of the 50 soldiers! But he was momentarily distracted and took hit in the belly. Even though he was bleeding, he kept fighting and still managed to kill 15 more soldiers before collapsing and being killed by the rest. The emperor couldn't understand why he made such an amateurish mistake when he was dominating the fight. Then the emperor looked at the direction the master was looking when he got distracted and saw the reason. The minister had slit his wife's throat, the same woman the spear master was having an affair with. That was the reason for the distraction. The emperor was extremely strict, but he was also fair. He then ordered his soldiers to take the minister and throw him into the arena, giving him the order to take the late master's spear and finish the fight in his place, as punishment for interfering in his punishment. The minister, crying and begging for forgiveness, took the spear and, despite being a competent swordsman, he was unable to handle the spear, which was customized and heavier than normal spears, and was quickly killed by one of the remaining soldiers.

Fair ? WTF he sent 50 men to a death arena for his amusement. He would let the man who betrays his fellow citizen trust to go unharmed should he won . He sent the man whose honour was tainted to a certain death after he caught his wife cheating. And couldn't care less about the woman who started in the first place. That's some tyrant type of misconduct. I doubt it to be a true story but regardless the claim of a fair emperor is absurd.

@@mitchmac3383 This is why the spearman is constantly moving, especialy at the start, he is preventing them from getting around him. If you look closely as the direction he moves you can probably pick it up.

@@mitchmac3383 A: like others said, he's deliberately avoiding that by moving B: you actually don't necessarily want to rush in at the same time, because in real life the "friendly fire" setting is always on.

The sad thing is that I haven't seen spears implemented well in any medieval fighting game. It's always just the poke poke move, and maybe a sweeping one, which apparently vastly undersells the weapon's potential.

It reminds me of my kendo days. We used to fight one against two or three to learn tactics and awareness. The singleton needs to use mobility so that they only face one opponent at a time. The group need to be able to launch simultaneous assaults from different directions.

Each year, there's a demo match of naginata vs kendo that's fun to watch. The katana was never really used like this for a reason. Initially, it was a side arm for archers (archers vs. spearman would be a fun video LOL). Longer swords were used mainly by and to take down mounted cavalry. It became the main sword in the Edo period because of the limitation on sword lengths, by which time guns were already an established part of Japanese warfare. In other words, this was the length that the government figured was too short to be useful.

Dark Souls and other games really don’t do justice to spears, I think. I’ve always thought of spears as just really weak weapons, only good for poking at people from behind a shield. But this dude gets in the mix, I’m really impressed. I also wish I could these sorts of things, they look so fun

Dark Souls needs all the weapons to have weaknesses and trade-offs so as to make all them worth playing and trying out. The game would be awful if you could poke bosses once or twice and kill them, as happens to humans. They're trying to do justice to the gameplay, not realistic weapon lethality. I mean most shooters have regenerating health and people are bullet sponges.

@@smexijebus That might be what FromSoft though, but that's not actually how it worked out in practice (some weapon types in that series are objectively better than others), nor was it a goal worth pursuing in principle either. Nioh's existence is proof that you can balance weapons against one another without resorting to arbitrary numerical tradeoffs to justify their usage. And for those wondering, spears in that game are used more similarly to what you see in this video - swift and versatile - not, "really long rapiers" as they're often shown in games.

@@ThePhilosogamer Nioh has no competitive multiplayer, the need for balancing is much much less restrictive. When all your players do is PvE, it doesn't matter how overpowered things are (to a certain extent) but when there's lots of PvP involved it becomes far more necessary to balance those out, less everyone use only that and all variety and fun (and thus playerbase) disappear as well. P.S. Two-handing spears in any FromSoft game changes the moveset and makes the spear much more versatile than 'a long rapier'. But if you use a shield you, well, use the shield. Like one would in real life, as well.

The Nioh series does spear pretty well. You couldn't really see it from this demonstration but realistically if you had minimal training and had to fight in a war during the time of sword and shield a spear would have been your best option. It gives you range and as you did see in the video, options.

Love the blood effect. Often when watching sparing video it is hard to see when and if a hit occurred. You have to rely on the combatants obviously calling their hits. Even if they are calling them making it clear to the opponent it is often unclear to outside viewer

One method is chalking the weapons, that way when someone is hit there is chalk left on their outfit to show where the hit occured.

Maybe in the future you can fight people's holograms and actually use lethal force. That'd be cool.

It was very skillful how the spearman continued to shuffle and flank the group. Kept them all in a single line so he could not be surrounded.

I'm a viking age re-enactor and have done both sides of 1 spearman(with and without shield) vs 2 sword/axe and shield. Shields make a huge difference as it makes it much easier to deflect the spear and get past the point. A spearman with a shield is also very different as although they have less control of the spear with only one hand they can now block and attack at the same time. In all my experiences having shields involved puts the spearman at quite a disadvantage, It is quite easy to deflect/trap/parry the spear when you have a shield and a weapon making it impossible for the spearman to keep the tip on target, you then just close in a quick and close as possible. Any other 2 handed weapon is the worst is against spears, dual wielding is better, Shield and weapon is best.

shield is the ultimate enemy of the spear. It essentially removes all of the non-thrusting utility (99% of the spears utility) a spear has and turns it into a deflectable weight. Part of what makes the spear hard to master is mastering how the weight is distributed as you manipulate the weapon and your opponent. If your opponent can take a precise movement (like a thrust with a swipe to knock you out) and just deflect and push that spear away, it will throw the spearman off balance.

@@sharp7j bc you all are playing pretend and make belief. if you hardkick a shield you easily fk up the arm behind it and stagger the user and you are quite safe from retaliation; same if you grab and fall rotated you break the arm, easily. there is also a ton off technics especially with axes to make a shield a handicap for the user more than an asset. shields are amazing, but they depend a lot on multiple people are fighting together or fighting people who are either unwilling or unknowing about how to counter it. a LOT off weapons you need to sacrifice something to win, as obv you are killing vs losing a hand example. besides neither the sword users nor the spear user here got any clue what they are doing, they look like random schoolkids having fun with sticks ...

Shield is the ultimate weapon, developed to beat the stick, but ultimately struggles against missiles. Still used for riot suppression today.

There's a reason why throughout history the spear was the standard weapon for the foot soldier. Especially the lesser trained ones. It takes multiple skilled swordsmen to kill one semi trained person with a spear

Reminds me of when I used to LARP. A single spear or other pole arm is quite powerful. People mock the "attack all at once" oversight in action sequences, but when the group doesn't have experience working together against one target and the target has experience about controlling the flow dynamics if the group, the single person can manipulate positioning in the battlefield to minimize simultaneous attacks, especially through flanking and charging lone people in such a way that causes the group to get in each other's way.

Only effective if there is enough space like this gym where the spearman can run around. On a crowded battlefield or inside a building, a spear is less wieldy. Plus, the swordsmen in this video do not have a shield.

Not only in LARP, but in the real world, nobody wants to die. Attacking all together may neutralize the enemy, but at what cost? It's easy to see a movie or video game and think, "if they had just attacked together, they could have killed the guy!" from the perspective of a fictional drama where 'they' are just fodder for the cause. A real person thinks, "What if I go down with him?" and waits for a safe opening.

i do some SCA heavy armor fighting. and yeah. group tactics are important, but are hard to develop well. its why formation fighting is really popular. because its hard to communicate over the shouting and yelling. ive been both on the receiving end and offensive when fighting numbers. and the best advice i can usually give is to just force the enemy to work against themselves. and always appear crazier than your opposition.

In every single imperial Chinese, Korean or Japanese drama that took place in wartime era, I've always loved their spearmen tactics. Their style was a lot less crude than the gladiatorial spear techniques which I hate. Woldo, Guandao and Naginata all look absolutely beautiful and their combat style even more. This showcase is really great to see the polearm being used so effectively

The reason why the Asian spear tactics look better than the western is because the people who are doing the research for those tactics and looking for people to be trained actually want it done right. Where as in western media they just want it to look flashy. Not understanding that with the spear specifically the effective use of one is WAY more flashy and entertaining than the bullshit they make actors do. Western media also heavily leans into the "poke people with this weapon" aspect of a spear and ignore the fact that the weapon can also slash and bludgeon people. A perfect example of this was in The Last Samurai when Tom Cruise is told by the samurai that the spear is not just for thrusting, and he is shown how to disarm and knock someone down in a single elegant move. Outside of a documentary that is one of the few times I have seen a spear used properly in western media.

@@MagMar-kv9ne yeah its less effective in swordfights since some of them use one handed spear techniques unlike Pikes and Halberds that aren't meant to be since they're very long, not really the point of what makes it a spear. But man, the Chinese use those short metal spears (Qiangs) and they look absolutely cool to me, especially the way some of them have their poles designed like a dragon

Spears have been used longer than swords. They obviously give greater reach to a soldier but also they are cheaper to produce…It takes a lot of metal to make one sword, but the only metal on a spear is the spear head so you could make a few spearheads for the same amount of metal as one sword, and wood is usually always plentiful.

It's also easier to train somebody to be "basically competent" with a spear than it is to train them to the same level with a sword. If it takes _a really good_ swordsman to beat three average dudes with spears - and you could arm and train SIX competent spearmen for the same cost as one really good swordsman - then average dudes with spears are just the logical choice.

And it's fucking effective against arrow, that are far bigger problem than the puny guy in front of you with a pointy stick... which you can also protect from with that shield. Spears were the logical choice for cheap badly trained armies of peasants that don't matter if they die. Still effective weapon if they don't get fucked over by something... like arrows. If you can't afford a sword and shield, you can't afford proper armor either. Even if it wasn't for arrows, swords > spears at close range. Spears are great as long as you manage to keep your enemies at distance, but once they get close? You're fucked. With many soldiers to spare, getting close isn't "if", but when. Even Romans that invented deadly spear formations abandoned them in favor of sword and shield (and javelin, AKA small spear with better range).

@@spugelo359 The romans were an exception. Most antique armies preferred spears. Especially Alexanders greek. Swords were often for self defense or a backup weapon. Especially in medieval times. Sometimes bow and arrow were more important in other times they had an inferior role.

@@bluemobster0023 Good job... you almost got it right. What they carried around was basically a javelin, a spear for throwing. Not for poking. You poke once and it breaks, not very good for poking weapon, now is it? Enemies did use proper 2 handed spears, meant for poking. But Romans already figured out how to defeat spears. Throw javelins, charge in with shields protecting from spears... and stay close so those spears become ineffective. And stab them with gladius... no much room for slashing in tight formations. Even when they preferred a weapon for poking, they went with the sword. Because it's short enough for close combat.

His movement and control with that spear is just beautiful to watch. Love this

Musashi says swords are the weapons of the warrior in the Book of Five rings. He said theres a reason you call spearman spearman, archer an archer, while you call a swordsman a warrior He also said you should learn all of them. Idk where you are getting that quote from man, but definitely not his personal writings..

Throughout history, the best weapon has been the one that allowed one man to insert metal into the other from the greatest distance. When men started using sticks and clubs, they could easily beat someone who only had their fists and their teeth, although since they were not metal they could only stun them not kill. When men started adding metal to weapons, they could kill at a longer range than those who could only stun with wooden implements. The spear became the dominant weapon, as it allowed one man to put metal into the other man before the opponent could put metal into him. The bow later dominated warfare as it could put metal into a mans stomach before he got close enough to use his spear. The musket beat the bow, again longer range. The breechloading rifle took the place of the musket, as it not only could get metal into a man at a longer distance, it gave you better rate of fire allowing you to get metal into more men in a shorter period of time. Artillery later became the king of weapons, it outranged any gun as well as having a huge area of effect where one shell could send bits of metal into the stomcahs of many men at once. Aircraft then took over from artillery, they have an even longer range, and carried multiple warheads all capable of putting metal into many men at once. Now people say the war of the future will be fought with Drones. Whats special about Drones? Well, a guy sat in an office in San Francisco can press a button and put metal into the stomachs of several men he sees through his video feed in Baghdad. Its all about range. And thats why the spear beats the sword.

Well keep in mind also that you can also wear metal on your body to protect against the metal attacking you. That's why the bow was great but it was not so unstoppable as it's depicted in movies. Metal armor would stop arrows, so it was still better for men to try to force metal via a spear into you. Once guns could get that metal into you regardless of how much metal you wore, that's when people stopped using spears

The historical record of the bayonet might also beg to disagree - and the bayoneted musket was hardly the most optimised iteration of the spear principle. The categoricality of the second one is a _liiiiiiiittle_ so-so too. The Romans had the sword as their primary infantry weapon, remember? The bulk of their opponents did _not._

Pretty sure result will change in favor of multiple swordsmen after some practice. For now they look very confused, like it is their first time in this format. Teamwork and communication are bad. Spearman looks very confident, he definitely tried it before.

I've geeked out and studied the geometry of 2vs1 and 3vs1 engagements. The idea in any case when you have the numerical advantage is to try to attack from widely different angles of approach. This puts the most stress on the defender's ability to ward off attacks. The objective is to try to create an angle of approach from the two attackers that is such that the defender can't really see and address both/all the angles at the same time. Eventually the hope is one of them can close in from a flank or from behind and strike a serious blow. The interesting thing is that if you consider everyone's mobility to be roughly equal, in a 2vs1 scenario, the two attackers can never really force the engagement from two widely different angles because the defender can retreat when the attackers are close, circle out to counter their efforts to come around on a flank, and if they both move to opposite flanks, he can quickly cross the line between them (given that there's enough distance between them and he moves quickly) and he can escape to make them have to form up and try again to engage him. It really takes a third attacker and a 3vs1 situation for the attackers to be able neutralize the defender's evasive maneuvering. The interesting thing in the video clip shown here is that with the three attackers, they don't really utilize their advantage at all by encircling the defender. They instead seem to stay grouped fairly close together in a line, which puts the least stress on the defender's ability to defend himself, because everything remains for the most part in front of him, within his peripheral vision. If you were to instead combine the efforts of two attackers to create two different angles of attack with a third attacker that is positioned behind the defender, blocking an uncontested avenue of retreat and limiting evasive movements in general, I think the spearman would be overwhelmed by the three separate angles of approach. The spear can be pretty effective transitioning from a forward facing exchange to a rearward facing exchange because either end of the weapon can strike a serious blow. Where the attackers can leverage an advantage is that they are able to threaten from three angles, meaning whichever two approaches the spearman has covered with the two tips of his spear, the third should be able to probe the spearman's defensive guard and force him to pivot, change guards, parry, anything that can open a new angle of attack for one of the other attackers. Anyways, I think this type of drill is great for developing skills, both for the attacking side that has the numbers advantage and for the defender. You have to move tactically and intelligently, but each of those movements can be isolated, identified, and practiced. Plus, the coordination of two or more attackers working together is a great drill for developing tactical awareness.

I don't know what to say about that. One of the swordsman might "sacrifice" himself to immobilize the spear and it's game over for the sperman. Plus people don't jist drop dead when they are touched by the spear. It takes a lot of force to actually deadly pierce a body. If the spearman misses and the spear gets caught or stuccked for 1, 2 seconds, he is doomed. 2 vs 1 duels in a real life and death situation are very hard to pull off.

This is hilarious to watch. They had to have had a lot of fun doing this. Spears were cheap to make and doesn't require a great amount of skill to be used effectively which is why they were used so much in history. Great demonstration to the advantages that a spear had.

No spears gave the user more range like artillery does on the battlefield. That is about it all summed up for you. Used in formations made it pretty lethal.

For those thinking that there is rivalry between spears and swords, in warfare the infantry equipment has always been spear, when the sword was introduced it was added and not replaced the spear. The probable order was a club; spear; spear + shield; spear + sword + shield.

@@TheChiconspiracy depend on a thousand different factors. no one would carry a spear for self defense, and no one would equip footmen with expensive swords. if you are fighting heavily armored opponents you will want a mace or hammer (even Japanese samurai had their war clubs), in this a spear will do less than a sword that at least has some weight to it to ring some bells if you hit with enough force.

@@danilooliveira6580 The average spear has a mass advantage over every type of sword but a greatsword... and if it was made of a hardwood haft, it will loose alot less energy and impart MUCH more energy than a flexible sword blade could ever do. The fact is that even after poleaxes and other polearms existed, heavily armored western knights still used spears with diamond cross sections on foot to good effect against each other, and samurai were using a te-yari that was sometimes barely longer than a katana for fighting indoors... all while wearing a katana on their hip.

depends a little on formation and time period, Romans for example used a short sword called a Gladius because the type of shield they used lent itself well to the army making a sort of turtle formation and poking through the cracks of the shell so to speak. the short sword was more maneuverable and easier to fit through the gaps, using a spear in that scenario would likely see people on your side getting accidentally stabbed, your range of motion being significantly reduced by the people around you, and the shaft might even get caught in awkward positions and break conversely, if you're gonna do a cavalry charge, you bet your ass they're using some kind of polearm for that. Reach is huge in attacking from horseback

@@Jackson-sc8jp Not really accurate. The Romans always had either a melee spear or a throwing spear that could also serve in melee. In most combat spears were likely used overarm which allows for fighting at very close range, allowing more power to be generated on the thrust and also avoiding the issues of hitting people behind you.

They would usually have short swords on their sides, when the enemy would get close enough that the spear was no longer effective. Incredible display by the Spearman, and good effort from the swordsmen.

As if the spearman can't walk backwards or sidestep to maintain distance (and attack a few more times while doing so). And if fixed in formation you'd just run in the spear of the second line.

@@BalmungTaishou there are more weapons other than japanese longbows that need a backup weapon. Swords for most of history were backup weapons for spearmen. When you are in a shieldwall or hoblite phalanx and your spear breaks or when you are in a pike phalanx and the enemy has managed to get behind the pikes, you have to draw your sidearm. Which is a sword. Because swords are the easiest to carry at the side as a backup. The backup of your sword would be a dagger or knife.

@@jarlnils435 hm in the constraints of Japan's history the primary weapon of the samurai were bows,spears then uchigatana so yes everything else is a backup for the bow. Since it was quite honorable to call someones name and then shoot them when they faced you.

I'd love to see an exercise where the swordsmen focus on one handed deflect/sidestep + grab the spear haft, especially when the spearman is outnumbered. When they were able to get inside, grabbing the spear might've been game changing.

Great combat! Very Cool! Swords are oft portrayed in pop culture, but on the battlefield, companies of Spear (Yari) conscripts or trained militias were one of the most common front line soldiers in history. The spear is long, powerful and typically requires much less metal to produce on a mass scale. Training to be a novice with spear can be taught to larger groups than specialized, close combat arms. The stick is pretty universal, but techniques vary across the world. Also defensive formations are much stronger with long arms. See Phalanx, Schiltron, Pike Wall for breaking horse charges, etc.

Of course there is a debate on that, I tend to agree to the side of the historians that the Romans did transitioned into using swords because more evidence tends to favor the said interpretation.

@@haroldcruz8550 The Romans' primary weapon was their shield. It was used offensively to bash and unbalance, and bind, the enemy, opening him up to the chops and stabs of the gladius. We don't see that in the movies, because it is not pretty... rather, it looks like a rugby scrum, with blood and guts and grown men screaming and pooping themselves.

Spears are also easier to teach people how to use. If you had to raise a militia from a village of peasants in a hurry and - for some reason - you had your choice of swords or spears, it would make more sense to train them to use spears.

@@the_inquisitive_inquisitor exactly, spear training will consist of "face the enemy and start poking" vs sword training that is "face the enemy and swing a bit but not too much and remember to keep the edge aligned and keep your shield up at all times and don't overswing" 😂

And people always question me when I use polearms in D&D. Figures like Sky Lance in Hero and Guan Yu in Romance of Three Kingdoms always struck me as more skilled and awesome warriors than your typical sword and board fighters.

In early editions of the AD&D game, pole arms and spears did have advantages especially at lower levels of play, as the longer weapon always won initiative in the first engagement between two opponents.

I mean if we're talking 5e, suprised it isnt the other way around A longsword in 5e doesnt have access to the Polearm Master feat, especially when combined with the Sentinel feat, is an an extremely effective combo A normal longsword and shield combo is kinda ehhh in 5e comapred to that Though this is assuming your willing to take these feats over say another like Great weapon Master combined with a Grewtsword or Battleaxe or an Abilty Score Improvement

@@KoryLunaa yea polearm master is my go to feat for lvl 4. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been able to convince my last few DMs to allow us a free starting feat at character creation, so my Goliath Paladin, Dragonborn Barbarian and Bugbear Fighter have all been able to start with Polearm Master from the get go so I can utilize the lvl 4 asi for strength or sentinel.

@@greenirez2798 Yer, Polearm Master is overall a solid feat Bruh I love free feat house rules, I've implemented in my games and all it's done is make my games more interesting and the players have more fun, nice that you can find DMs who also do that rule

The spear was like the AK-47 of ancient times. Easy to make and use, and covers a large array of sinarios. It might not be the farthest ranged weapon, but it can be used for a good distance. It can only be beat fairly by either another spear or a bow (sniper).

@@redace4821 True. Assuming you manage to get close enough, a knife can be beneficial. But the shaft of the spear can be used to deflect or melee a close opponent. But yes, it won't be anywhere near as deadly or effective as a knife in that scenario. The main strategy of being a Spearman is to keep your enemy locked away at a distance, which is rather easy to do. Even an inexperienced Spearman can hold his own against a swordsman that is experienced.

Back line used towing spears witch bend after they hit so enemy cant use it again ... And better quality spearman had short swords , shield ,clubs ,towing weapons ,"elite" spearman had heavy armor ...

In non-military scenarios where armor would be light or non-existant, I'd add a handful of bo-shuriken or throwing knives; things you'd pair with a sword for self defense for just this type of scenario

for the most part the spearman does an excelent job controling the movement of his opponants. the lightsaber really needed to learn to commit, unfortunately when they finally did they were too far away from support. pack tactics are key, you have to flank your opponant to open them up and negate that reach, but the spearman will, as he did several times, appear to open himself up to a flank to draw one too far away from the support of the others and make them an easy target. that time he was locked in a corner would have gone very differently for him if they were working more as a team than as individuals who happened to be together.

Yup. In my experience, against three coordinated swords a short spear is toast. If they pressured more, the spearperson would have had to improve, being more aggressive and feinting more, but they would have had the edge. When I trained, if you didn't finish each sword in three or four tempos, the others would get you.

Nonsense. This was not a real demonstration. Swordsman parries the spear, rushes forward, kills the spearman. The people with fake swords in this clip have no idea how to fight against a spear. They do not position their swords correctly to parry a spear thrust. And any other attack by a spear takes more time than the equivalent sword attack. So, parry the spear thrust, rush up, and kill the spearman. Simple as.

@@FinnMcRiangabra You are absolutely correct on tactics. I've seen other demonstrations that I liked better where it had people unfamiliar with using spears face off against skilled swordsmen who had never faced spears before. I'd love to see a demonstration where everyone knew what they were actually doing, but this level of mutual unfamiliarity with spears seemed to balance the playing field well. And they learned together that the correct tactics were exactly as you described. You had to get within the spear's reach and then you had the advantage. But that is still easier said than done. Even after they learned that, they would still fail to execute it and be "killed" more than half the time. Maybe they could have improved with practice, but again the spearmen were also learning and could have improved with practice. You are absolutely correct about what tactics to use, but I'd hardly say it's that simple like a sword should always win. The extra reach from the spear is still definitely an advantage in its favor.

The quality of content almost makes me wish it required a short interview before watching. So many secrets here. The footwork shouldn’t be taken for granted. The tactics of the spear are top notch. You know it’s Budo when increasing opponents makes your life easier. The fact the swordsmen didn’t trip or strike each other by accident is a credit to their training. So good. It’s philosophy in motion. I hope we have another resurgence of Budo in the west. With MMA it seems to leave you sore. With Budo you leave having lived a dozen lives and died a thousand times. With MMA you are happy to have won. With Budo you will meditate on what was lost, and if the cost can be justified. I’m beyond grateful for having this training before going into service. It saved lives and allowed a type selfless service that is difficult to describe. Shinshin Shigan is a feeling I hope many more people are introduced to through Budo. Thanks for letting me ramble.

Great display of skill from the spearman. Great mobility and aim. However, the swordsmen looked uncoordinated. They all looked like they were waiting for their 1v1 moment. Didn't capitalize on any extreme range spear thrusts, no trying to bind/bat the spear, and seemed very uncomfortable in general. Great video!

@@iamtheteapot7405 I would disagree. If that were the case, then the exercise would have only had 2 combatants on the mat at any given time. As funny as it may sound, I do indeed have experience fighting against and with spears in armored combat, both in a single combatant setting and in a massive battle. Look up Eyes of the Dragon, Great Western War 2021 for an idea of what I'm talking about. Fighting alone and fighting with others is definitely a different skill set, but not by much. If they trained more and had someone dedicated to fouling his spear, they could overwhelm him, perhaps taking 1 casualty consistently.

@@iamtheteapot7405 I understood your point. This drill is indeed focused on the spearman. I do not think the swordsmen were holding back by agreement or ruleset. I'm not doubting their skill or experience. I wanted to highlight that their previous fighting experience did not prepare them for this exercise. While, for the spearman, this exercise was basically a series of three 1v1 fights in very quick succession because of how the swordsmen chose to approach the fight. It is called "How many swordsmen [are needed] to fight a spearman" after all.

I enjoyed this video a lot. Thank you. 😊 Had the swordsmen synchronized their attack literally at the same time, they would have had the upper hand. But all they did was moving their formation with the spearman to avoid the spearman achieving flank position and turn into a 1-on-1 battle. A 3-on-1 battle is no good, if the 3 aren’t attacking at the same instant. Kudos to the spearman though. Definitely fighting smart. Trying to break up the 3-on-1 advantage and turn it into quick individual 1-on-1’s.

@@TarrenHassman Unfortunately, in a formation of spearman vs samurais, I think the spearman formation wins. Samurai side would need to weed down the spearman formation with archery first. This is just my speculation though. I don’t imagine a formation of centurion winning against phalanx. Unless flanking maneuver. But that gets us into another rabbit hole quick.

Just mentioning that even if their tactics weren’t the best, needing such a high level of tactics to win 3 v1 really puts the power of spears into context

Very true. But unless the swordsmen keep a close formation, it's very hard to coordinate a simultaneous attack. I'm not sure why, but it's some kind of instinct, to wait until the spear is finished with one of your friends, before you feel its a good moment to attack him.

I couldn't stop watching because of how much the tip of the spear resembles a giant mouse pointer.

Keeping a low guard was an interesting play with the spear. Besides "hand snipes", I've seen a lot of spars ended with someone make a sudden attack on the legs. With the spears reach, and the fact most of them were employing high guards, going for the leg is a good strategy. Now considering things like Italian and German Swordplay etc. does employ some low guards, that interplay could be interesting... But considering my own experience with how unpredictable spear fighting already is (with how quickly you can change grips and can throw it at almost anytime)... It would still be difficult as hell to fight with a sword 😂

Love the squelch sound effect! It's tough to take on a good spearman when they have room to run.

There's a reason spears are the ultimate melee weapon and always have been throughout warfare. Wood is cheap and making shafts is easy! You only need tiny bit of metal at the end. Great for mass production! And the range meant that even inexperienced fighters could kill or injure a much more skilled opponent using a sword before they could even get to them. Many ancient battles were won by relatively untrained commoners with spears! It's like how guns beat all melee weapons, range is a huge factor!

The technique of keeping the spear along the floor seems very effective, it goes below the guard of the sword, preventing parrying away, it makes the attacker less confident as even a slight mistep will be a nick to the feet, it almost plays on a bit of a psychological block aswell, something crawling towards you along the floor, you give it way more distance than you would if the spear was in the air, allowing him to control far more floor space.

Except its complety useless if you were using a real spear, since the steel and depending on the floor, it would barely slide, of not even slide at all, unless you did a lot of strengh. So thats the technique I found the worse, since its only useable in this situation.

It also shows you how pointless this rules set is, as if you were running your spear along the ground like that the actualy amount of force you could get on someones limb when you hit it would cause a scratch, and then they hit you with a full strength swing.

@@willthesword You sound like you've never cut yourself. slight pokes with sharpened metal can cause meaningful damage. Yes, it's not as leathal, but it can hurt enough to cause shock paralysis. And that split second is more than enough for a proper secondary hit.

Adrenaline in these sorts of situations normally keeps you going well past significant injuries without you even realising you were injured. People keep fighting with multiple bullet wounds without pausing. A light cut from a spear doesn't cause someone to stand still to be killed.

But it seems you know the general concept so whatever I know that adrenaline can keep you going, but the neural feedbacks work in multiple and contested ways. Depending on numerous factors your body may walk it off temporarily, or it may go stiff like cramps in a sense. Human body is way too much complicated to be put into this-equals-that. You're not wrong, but I'm not wrong either.

In his 1626 book, Richard Peeke claimed to have used a makeshift quarterstaff with sharp point to defeat three Spaniards armed with rapier & dagger. George Silver thought the short staff, a 8-9ft spear with a point on each end & stout enough to give powerful blows, had the odds against two opponents armed with swords & daggers. Those historical examples suggest three was about the number of folks with swords required to defeat someone with a spear on average. (Peeke didn't think the odds were in his favor in that fight he managed to win.)

Bear in mind also that many of the wins you would get in that match up would see you totally unharmed at the end, ready for the next fight, while even 3v1 the swordsmen are likely to take losses against you even when they win.

I recently just found this channel-all the practitioners have good skill but that Spearman is exceptional-it does help that the spear is the ‘king of melee’ weapons but when out in the hands of a real expert it makes for a huge challenge for the other combatants. I loved how the spearman prevented from getting flanked or surrounded. Great channel!

I think the rules of this contest greatly favor the spear over the sword. Most of the "touch" and slashing attacks by the spear would not be disabling though certainly inconvenient. Even a kill shot might not drop an opponent before getting seriously injured in return. Fun to watch but as a competitive 3-weapon fencer (and occasional stage combat fighter including spear basics), I have my doubts. Dragging the spear point is very poor technique. And the swordsmen appear unskilled in their use of distance and ability to coordinate... there was of running to a position, setting, and getting killed. More of an exhibition than an actual test between skilled combatants.

A real spear can deliver far more powerful blows than a sword could... Many sword cuts are mitigated by heavy clothing, never mind actual armor.

@Matrick How the is being empty handed better against any weapon? If you're wearing a good pair of gloves, you can grab a sword blade with little issue, but actually trying that against someone slightly competent is basically suicide, and a spear would be even worse.

@Matrick Have you even tried it against someone with a rapier? It's a nightmare, and a spear can be redirected faster and hit a wider range of targets. Feint high and quickly thrust low into the femoral artery. Feint low and make your opponent reach down then stick him in the throat. If you have ANY kind of weapon, you have something that you at least have a small chance of parrying with that isn't your easily pierced flesh.

Yeah sweeping the tip like that was bad form, I learned to get behind the lethal range quickly and use the blade to disable further use. So in this example push forward, and step on the pole arm while another attacks. Or just rush in before he can pull back the haft. If your weapon is close range and you’re up against a medium range opponent you want to push the advantage and take away their ability to plan an effective counter. These guys seem like beginners just casually seeing what a fight would look like spear v sword. A master swordsman knows his weakness though and the weakness of the spear. A sword advantage is the entire weapon is dangerous whereas the spear only the ends are effective offensively while the haft is defense

Fun to watch. I come from a different fencing system and I would have handled the weapons and general movement differently. As the swordsman I probably would have tried to close the distance and get into a bind between sword and spear for a better control of the spearman's movements. But all in all, the spearman showed good knowledge on controlling the distance and avoiding to face his opponents all at once - very clever.

For sure, lack of coordinated attacks was the big reason swords took such hard losses. But they missed some big opportunities to trap the Spearman and his weapon.

I guess the term "divide and conquer" is the strategy the spearman did well in this video otherwise he would have easily been overwhelmed being outnumbered.

french foil, spanish rapier and dagger user here. 15yrs exp. 1v1 you still would have been killed pretty easily to the spearman. Maybe with spanish rapier and dagger you could do better as spanish rapier has a lot more range. but foil and epee. No. the second you try to "close the distance" is the second you "fall on the enemy's spear"

In a fight against multiple opponents hit and run and circling tactics tend to work best to divide and conquer the enemy. with a spear you can do this and they won’t even be able to touch you

No matter what system you do you have to have darned near perfect distance and timing to fight with a sword against a spear or polearm

It seems in this sort of exercise a spearman gains a lot of benefits thru it being a practice / dummy session. I don't think you could really aggressively push a spear around the ground like that, and the durability of a spear comes into question if it is parried with a sword.

Spear shafts were always a dense hard wood. Very strong and would require several hacks in the same spot to get through with the sharpest of swords.

@@JeremiahPTTN Yeah but if the 3 surrounded him there would be a swordsman likely injured or dead. Also these swordsman did not have shields which allowed several swordsmen to charge a lone spear user hacking at him from the safety of the shield.

Your legs and groin get stabbed a long while you protect your torso and head with the shield. you go down for the fight, but live to fight another day (maybe). Ancient greek combat was all about spear and shield, but the shield only gets you so far! It's also very specific to fighting with older soldiers close together. A swordsman with a shield often means you end up with a shorter sword too, which doesn't help.

the spear showed it had little durability when the guy had time to just put the tip back on.

When we played same games best swordsmen tactic was formation line relatively close each other (and advance to spearman holding line): spearman hits (maybe) one swordsman, but others counterattack and win in most cases. Otherwise spearman can charge each swordsman individually and win each charge due to the advantage in the length of the weapon (as shown).

@@gregbrown3082 Not true, since it's commonly known that the waiting strategy's main winning condition isn't age at all, but the ammount of food and water avaiable to each fighter. One of the fighters could be 20 years older than the other, if he had more food and water avaiable he would still win. Although, I must say, that if the hunger and thirst variables weren't a factor in this strat, and all we were left with was age to determine the winner, you sir, would for sure carry no losses against anyone in this comment section. Furthermore I must also insist that, even if thirst and hunger were considered, and there was no food avaiable but plenty of water to both fighters, you would most definitely still hold the winning record.

I’m 43 and have practiced WuShu for almost 30 years. I am immersed in the martial arts world. I’ve never once had to use my knowledge with a spear, soft sword, broad sword, staff, or ANY weapons forms in real life. This is not practical knowledge 🤷🏻‍♂️. Spears and swords are no concealable, so pretending like being good enough to apply these techniques practically is moot and pointless if you expect to one day use it in real life. As a Chan Chien Northern Stylist who’s weapon of choice is the spear (like most snake stylists) I am very proficient with a WuShu spear. It serves zeros purpose in my life outside of WuShu/Kung Fu. I get that realistic training leads to realistic results....but in reality, how many of videos are on World Star where a dude pulls out a straight sword while in a fight? I just feel that if you’re gonna spend time training for a realistic situation, then you think realistically 🤷🏻‍♂️and in reality, on the streets, you’re going to be defending yourself against a gun or a knife. Train practically to defend yourself against THESE weapons. See, I don’t have a backpack big enough to conceal a 6.5 foot long staff with a pointy tip🤣🤣🤣I do however have pockets that can hold a pistol

What I’m saying is, if you’re practicing martial arts purely for practical application in realistic situations, think realistically about the situations you may find yourself in. If you’re practicing ancient weapons forms for self defense you’re practicing for the wrong reason. These are weapons of war, not self defense

So, your comments are impressive to me. - I do not have much experience in real fights without rules ; but accidentally I had been a couple of street fights where I felt my skills were poor. BTW, one of the said fights dragged me to the local police station; and I felt so bad and promised to myself I would not be in any fight (even a barking fight/ debate fight) again. - Now I am just a u-tube watcher and have fun spending time to watch the new comers in the martial arts field. - The world has changed a lot; in that most martial art practitioners nowadays are trying to beat each other in the cage like we saw from the action movies during our teenage. - They practice martial arts for real fights ; but they can never know how each real street fight will impact on their lives. The loser suffering injured from their martial art application will ambush them. A person I knew was stabbed behind in the toilet when he was peeing. It was a tragedy. - Despite my full impression on this VDO, I still do not want to practice for fight. So, I very much like your comment 🙏

yes until the end where he didnt kept the enemy´s at distance. i dont really understand why he stoped running in the end like it would have been a victory if he didnt let himself get cornered and i dont understand why he let his guard down at 4:29

@@justsomeswordkid1630 There was another match earilier on, with two swordsmen vs spearman. He was running two matches, trying not to get outflanked, so I'd assume he was indeed exhausted by that point.

I wouldn't call shinai a real weapon, but it was interesting to watch.

That poor tripod in the middle. Must be scared to death. "Please don't hurt me"

The thing that struck me was the hesitation on the part of the swordsmen. I also use a spear (among other pole arms), as well as the sword, so I understand the advantages and disadvantages of both weapons. There were many moments when the spearman would make a move that would've ended him, IF just one of the swordsmen would've carried through with a serious attack; they chose to block many of the spearman's thrusts, when simple movement would have gotten them closer to make their attack. The spearman as well made errors... (before I go further, I understand it was a light-hearted contest, made for fun) ...and just about the only technique I saw him using was the thrust. He hardly ever used the shaft, or the butt. Some of his moves were opened him up considerably. Skating the tip of his weapon along the floor as he did when things got "serious" would not have been possible with live steel. Overall, it was a deeply enjoyable video. Good job!

Exactly, deflect the spear down and to one side with your weapon/ shield, step diagonal forward the other way while keeping your weapon/shield on the spear shaft and close for the kill. You have to wait for a chance and commit. It is much easier with a shield, being able to hook with an axe has its uses too.

@@raebertgrayson5766 My tactical approach, though myself neither being experienced nor trained, would be to wait for the spearman's thrust, then sidestep, grap the shaft, and either go in for the attack or break the spear. Or, in a 3v1, let the others go in for the kill. However, I do understand that this would be a risky thing to do in a real fight, and there might be a warrior's (samurai) code against doing such a thing. So, what would you say about that?

@@MikaeruDaiTenshi That's a very sound approach! Getting one's weapon grabbed is always a risk when using pole arms, especially in mass combat, Most people would be at a loss on how to deal with it. The obvious counter would be to free the weapon by leveraging it against the opponent's grip: the human hand has certain inherent weaknesses: moving your weapon in a circle usually serves to break such a grip. if done quickly enough, It's surprising how little force is required to do so. Points for posing a good observation!
