How Many Survival Bags Do You Freakin' Need ???

Ғылым және технология

Sensible Prepper Presents: Responding to so many questions asking "Sootch, how many bags do you really need and why so many?" I decided to talk about the bag philosophy and why having a system is important.

Funny thing happened at Sams club a couple hours ago while I was checking out. The woman in front of me had the same Maxpedition bag you have there and I said to her, "we have the same purse". Since I'm a man in my 40s she laughed.

People think it can't happen to them. People think we, (preppers)are the crazy ones. I thought that too until it happened to me. Being broken in on was one of the most disheartening feelings a person can feel. The sense of security went out the window when a drug addict broke in my house. no one was home at the time,THANK GOD!!. But I have carried my gun with me every day since. Now my favorite saying to my wife is "watch you're back". Life is the MOST important thing we have. Protect it and the ones you love. PS, They caught him. I was the 5th one he broke in on in our town that day.

The most sensible prepper is the one that is prepared sensibly. Not overkill, but has the right stuff and enough stuff for yourself, your family, one extra for your family, and one for sharing. So 4 times essential items is the minimum sensibility in an area where you are expecting a likely extreme danger event or wilderness setting. That way if everyone did that (which most don't), then there will be enough to share without killing each other for it in an emergency. BTW this channel is the best channel to guide the common person in the right direction to being prepared. Like, subscribe and share.

SP, Thanks again for this great video! I've been at this game for 20 years and still make enhancements from time to time. I've got 5 bags and I was trekking on foot the other day with a simple day pack weighing around 35-40 lb.. I discovered two things, 1) I'm out of shape and 2) there is definitely room for improvement with my current bags and inventory. Like you, I've reviewed many prepper videos. It seems everyone and their brother has one, but that's ok as we're all members of the same community sharing info. My philosophy is simple: "You get what you pay for, so buy the best you can afford (don't skimp), purchase doubles when its possible (think redundancy-Thanks TNP), always refine the contents of you bags and make inventory lists for each. Always find ways to lighten your load (believe me, if you try hard enough, you can find lighter substitutes or rethink or repurpose your gear). Hit the gym or try and get into a safe exercise routine. I was in the military in the 70's and I swear, carrying my heaviest pack felt like I was marching the "Baton Death March," you don't have to be a super hero, just be fit and healthy enough to carry your heaviest bag. Keep your eyes peeled for sales at Home Depot, Lowe's, mom & pop hardware stores, Walmart, sporting goods stores for ammo, camping gear, solid fuel, porte-potty baggies. Speaking of which, Get a roll of toilet paper and pull off about 15 feet of TP and fold it, place it in a ziplock baggie and place one in each of your bags! Don't over look this little detail. I just read a great article yesterday regarding improvising a light weight mess kit to replace the stainless steel one I have. In the end, it's really up to you, (your bags and gear) and like SP says, how much is your family worth? For me, I'd rather have it and not need it than not have it and wished I had it.

I am not an American, and gun culture is viewed here as, at best paranoia, and at worst "blood thirst". Yet I found that we here at my city is people are in a place where it is too safe - too safe to even think of preparing for emergencies or even familiar themselves with basic first-aid. I may not need firearms (and it is strictly controlled here anyway), but a lot of stuff for medical emergencies, power outtages, storm etc. has inspired me - at least I prepared a first-aid kit and also an emergency pack too.

Well put. Many people misconstrue what a "Go bag" is. Not everyone is going to carry a firearm, or a knife, or some other weapon, and that's perfectly fine. Many people think I'm crazy when I tell them I have a go bag, but after they speak to me for a bit, they realize it makes a lot of sense. My father has had a lot of health issues in recent years and he may be rushed to the hospital at some point. Rather than going crazy trying to prepare myself and hurrying to the hospital, I keep a simple go bag that has a solar charger for my phone, clothes, water, snacks, etc. The bag has everything I need to leave home for up to 3 days on a whim. You don't always need to prepare for a zombie invasion or terrorist attack... sometimes you just need to prepare for everyday life.

Sootch, I traveled to the Philippines with my family last year during xmas/new year and i had my first aid kit and a swiss army knife and two high quality flashlights with me and lots of batteries and baby wipes in my back pack. I treated some kids who got injured shooting fireworks and my wife's family had several brownouts, when the power went off at night time. It was so very comforting being prepared and using all the items I packed in my backpack. I even treated a dog who got attacked by other dogs in the neighborhood, by bandaging his leg and treating the open wound from my first aid kit. i highly recommend investing in a high quality first aid kit! I owe you much thanks, because you encouraged me to gather all those things way before i left on my trip. Sootch, you are the man. And a shout out to Nutnfancy, he also inspired me too.

Sootch this is by far the best video you've made for people that don't take survival serious. I show this to all my friends that say it's not that serious, it will never happen to me, I've made it through a crisis before without a bag. For some reason this video makes sense to them. Some are still in denial but most change their mindset. I may be a horrible person but I tell them all if they don't make an effort to save themselves don't come to me looking to use what I prepared for my family. 1000 thumbs up brother. Keep up the good work.

When the lights went out at work and it was pitch black, I turned on my 4 Sevens flashlight in seconds and got a "wow! You're prepared!" comment immediately. Your "be prepared" comment says it all. That is the essence of your bag videos, like you said. You can start small on that and work up. I carry a flashlight with me all the time. That's pretty small but essential when you need it! The bag videos are probably some of the most important ones because they encapsulate (I think) your philosophy. Some of the bags you put together are financially intimidating! They might have $3k of equipment in them! I'm learning that I don't need to have everything you have just to cover the basics. Your point is just to say that one could do xyz, but do something! Thanks!

You keep up the good work Sootch. I LOVE your bag videos and I use them as part of an enjoyable evening after a hard day at work. You've even helped inspire me to finally purchase a Maxpedition jumbo versipack. I'm glad I did and I shouldn't have waited so long. This month I flew with it as my carry on and it worked great. I went to Beaufort and Parris Island and thought about you as I was close to your neck of the woods. The Marines I was travelling with said "everytime we look at you, you are pulling something else out of that bag and we keep wondering where it's all coming from! That's a great bag!" I'm picky about my gear and my Maxpedition bag is one of my favorite pieces. My ten year old son even has his own Maxpedition pouch now and we built him a fire kit to keep in it.

Your discussion point about cyber attacks and powers outages is one of my greatest concerns, Sootch. You see, I was a Fire Department Medical First Responder, and I went on more than one call where someone's CPAP Machine, or Home dialysis unit had failed due to a Power Outage. I myself am a diabetic, and though not as critical in my personal situation, not having light could be potentially life-threatening in a Diabetic, or ANY medical Emergency. I have had an interest in helping out others in times of need for my entire adult life-this is why I SO LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! Part of this desire is what inspired me to become a Ham Radio Operator. SP1 has some good ideas regarding Solar, however his group needs to do much more in that area. Don't get me wrong, here-I respect David VERY highly, and if I ever meet either of you, it would be MY honor to buy you dinner! I designed, built, and am successfully running two portable backup power systems in emergencies and at special events. God willing, in the next few days, I hope to FINALLY begin building a whole-house off grid lighting system. I won't go into detail as I'm already too long in this post. THANK YOU for what you do. You ARE having a positive impact on many, many lives! Sincerely, Bruce A. Forster ebxrocks@yahoo.com

Thanks for all the great information. The wife and I have just retired, and are getting back into recreational shooting. We have worked and lived all over the world including Canada, several countries in the Middle East and Afghanistan, but the most dangerous was in Johannesburg, South Africa during the elections in the 90’s. The products that you cover were not available at the time, but we are now getting with the program! We have retired in the same general area as you, and hope to hook up sometime. Thanks again for all the great information.

Your "Bag" videos are very helpful. No one bag (kit) will serve all situations. Your videos act as 1. an incentive to address a need and 2. guide or starting point from which to begin. Please keep them coming!

Always enjoy and appreciate your info. You are right on. Get a bag ready then research, train, try using it on a campout with the family or alone if you can. Then as you said your gear and system will evolve. I now love putting gear together testing my knowledge or putting something into practice I saw. You will also really see how much does Not work and needs to be taken out. Funny in my first bags all weapons no food, Now well balanced and really designed for essential survival with some added comfort. Never forget the top if wipes, hygiene people. Lol.

Thanks man! I've been watching your videos and taking your advice since early 2011. Not only are your videos thought provoking but excellent guidance. I built my first bag, (and ultimately bags for my family as well), after seeing them. My bags have also evolved and been upgraded as new technology and gear comes available. I've found that your research, advice and efforts save me a lot of time, (and money!), in weeding out what's best and what are gimmicks in the marketplace. Thank you for all you do! P

Myself, my wife, and our 2 kids each have a long term bug out bag/INCH bag, we also have a dedicated medical bag, food bag, and ammo bag. We have an all terrain cart that the dedicated bags and extra gear goes in, the INCH bags go on our shoulders and that basically completes our bug out system.

Hey Sootch, I'm with you on the bags. One of my favorite past times is unpacking and repacking my bags and replacing and refitting the items in it. I have learned something from all of your videos. The only downfall is I have the need to revisit my bags after each one of your videos! HaHa! Keep up the awesome job

I know I’m 6 years late to the party, but I’m learning A LOT from your videos. I really wish I would have had this knowledge when the Northeast Power Grid went down in August of 2003. I was stuck in Downtown Detroit with my (then) very pregnant (then) wife. The 10 minute drive home took two hours. A get home back would have been really handy. Now, I live in the country, not far from a nuclear power plant, and in the middle of our “tornado alley”. I’m currently working on Bug Out Bags. Thanks for all the pointers and info.

I weighed my bugout bag today at 28.4 pounds, missing a few items so probably 30 pounds. Need to lighten to at least 20 pounds. Use a LAPG.24, with 2 molle pouches, 1 for metal bottle.& 2nd for water. Survival tent, 40 degree mummy bag, 100ft 550 cord, couple bics , steel & rod,, arch lighter, & waterproof matches. Headlamp, flashlight, survival flashlight, power bank, guide -10 solar recharger, solar panel, water tabs, Scheyelle water filter, steripen. Trauma first-aide, spork, large folding knife, sharpener, 7” fixed knife. Longselve shirt, 2 socks, hat, gloves, small toiletries, bandana. No food but thinking of ‘survival tabs,’. For 72 hr. In doing this I learned that.one needs to create different bags: EDC, 72 hr, bugout; 1 for office, 1 for trunck, & 1 for home (wife’s set up); as for me am always in truck, bugout in truck, so 1 bag for me. But bag at 30 pounds to heavy. Thinking of having two bags in truck & 3 rd with gear to switch out when needed. Learning aa this from you & Gray Beard Green Beret. What I find hard is not getting caught up in the ‘apocalypse’ hype,, remembering that we decided to hunker down. One item I included that know one mentions is having a flash drive with digital copies of important papers & family photos.Back to lighten that bag!

Great video, Very amazing stories at the start of this video. Here in Canada a fire arm is not an option for defense but this doesn't mean we can't be prepared for any disaster. You have given me so many ideas and inspired me to live a much more organized life and gain much training I needed to be more prepared. I only wish there where more people I could share this information with and learn from. I hope I never have to use a lot of this information but I sure feel a lot better every day knowing I am able to handle many situations that may present themselves. You make great videos thank you for inspiring much of my organization!

I am one of your critics of the anti terrorist bag, But with that said I 100% agree with having go bags, concealed carry weapons, medical kits, ETC in your home and cars. Something as simple as jumper cables in you car. You would not believe how many cars I have jump started with my jumper cable set because no one else around has them. I'll say you missed the mark with the anti terrorist bag but you are still getting the preparedness mindset out there and that is always a positive thing. I was in Hurricane Katrina. Not by choice, my military duties forced me into a shelter on Keesler AFB. I have personally heard stories from friends that survived on a multi pack of cheese crackers for a week because that is all the food they had in the house. This was a slow moving hurricane and there was plenty of advance warning yet still they put themselves in the position of only having cheese crackers in their house for food. Another friend had a go bag and when he evacuated he couldn't find a hotel anywhere so he ended up spending 2 weeks at an RV park. Not in an RV but in his shelter kit from his go bag. My wife was able to evacuate to a nice warm hotel because I always try to look ahead and I made hotel reservations a week before the hurricane hit. Pretty much as soon as it formed I was making hotel reservations out of town. It is easy enough to cancel hotel reservations as late as 24 hours out if it changes course or dies out but not so easy to make them when a hurricane is bearing down. She ended up with 8 people in her room because none of my friends I told to make reservations believed it would hit Biloxi until it was too late. Being vigilante and always prepared is a way of life and a way of life too many people just don't even attempt to try. From simple things like going to a New Years party and throwing a couple of safety pins in a suit pocket (someone is going to have a dress malfunction guaranteed) to simple safety kits in your car with jumper cables as mentioned above. As Mr. Murphy says.... Stuff happens

I started prepping for hurricanes before I had ever heard the term "prepper", or knew what one was. My prep got put to the test for Hurricane Katrina. I had dealt with four hurricanes prior in life, but Katrina cleaned our clocks. We were fine, but our worldly possessions were reduced to little enough to fit in one car load. To this day, we call our family go-bag with general supplies our "hurricane bag", even though we now live [mostly] out of reach from hurricanes. We call our individual bags with 24-hours' worth of supplies to be grabbed at a moment's notice for sudden evacuation our "tornado bags." We had a real-world tornado bug-out in 2013 for the storm cell that spawned a brief tornado in Anderson. Additionally, our vehicles have supplies to prevent, mitigate, and get home in case of a breakdown.

I for one am grateful to you for the bag vids. When I first got savvy to the fact that we needed to get prepared, it was horribly overwhelming. I found that the best way to feel like a weight was off my shoulders was to get our bags together. Then I could take a breath, and start to really wrap my head around what I needed to prepare. So, a big thank you for helping me begin without panic and fear. God Bless
