How Many Slang Words Do We Know? (feat. Billy from Go! Billy Korean)

Billy's Channel: / gobillykorean
Go! Billy Korean Website: gobillykorean.com/
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Billy and I played a little game where we test each other on how many slang words in our second language we know, among the 10 words each of us brought.
Who do you think would win the game?! Haha.
There’s also a 벌칙 at the end, which is basically a punishment for the loser. We both did our best at this game to avoid 벌칙 😆 Hope you enjoy the vid and also get to know some expressions you didn’t know before, both in English and Korean!
*Just in case you're wondering, we used Zoom for recording. What's great about it is that it automatically alternates two videos according to who's speaking at the moment, so it makes it much more convenient to edit :)

Hi everyone, thank you for being so encouraging and supportive of this collab! I'm happy you enjoyed the video as much as I enjoyed making it😊 There's a couple of mistatement I made about some words in the video, and here's the clarification: 설탕 is not pure-Korean. It turns out it's actually Sino-Korean. But it means sugar anyways, same as 당 :) 시월드 is not for a guy to use. 시어머니 and 시누이 each means a mother-in-law and a sister-in-law, but it is only used by a woman. So it specifically means a husband's mother and a husband's sister. So "시" refers to a husband's family. There's a separate term to use to refer to a wife's mother which is 장모님 and 처제, 처형 for wife's sisters. The family terms can be quite difficult to get used to due to their variety, but no worries, you won't be using them much (unless you have a Korean wife or a husband haha) And thank you again for watching!💜

In terms of its etymology, "ripped" migrated into mainstream English usage from bodybuilding jargon. Usually describes abdominal muscles. The word's domain/context was magazines such as 'Flex'. I don't recall people using the word much in the 1980s. It's a relatively recent adoption into mainstream usage.

I think that slang words are somewhat colloquial speech. California young Billy was hesitant about giving her credit for "pain in the neck"; but North Carolina old me thinks that "annoying" (person) was a spot on interpretation.

Oo! It's so interesting that for "Tacky," you said "Extra," because that would be the word, "Gaudy." "Gaudy" & "Tacky" can go hand in hand! Gaudy is to be extra, showy, & usually tastesless. Something that is "too much" to the point of seeming ridiculous. And so in that, we would say it's gaudy & tacky! Cheap looking, lacking taste, shabby, poorly done/looking, ridiculous, outrageous, etc. So that was actually a really good guess you made!!

For the Korean slang 직딩, I personally don't think Billy should've gotten that point to be honest haha... But I guess you enjoyed it by the end of the day & that's all that matter

There is a big difference between those comparison on Korean and English slang terms. The former are mainly abbreviations which at first came into use between young and relatively undereducated people, which means most of them cannot be found in standard dictionaries. The latter is not. So this kind of stuff doesn't make any sense.

Pain in the neck- can refer to a person, who is annoying. Also, pain in the arse/ass. 👍🇦🇺

He's so hard on her answers. Her answer is right, and then he leads her astray. Meanwhile, he has no idea what the Korean means, and he's just fishing for an answer, and she gives it to him. It looks like a running joke you guys agreed on.

Hello, thank you for watching the video all the way through! And thanks for providing feedback. I just wanna say, the main purpose of this game was for entertainment and education, and we implicitly agreed on having fun, and making it fun. Also, Billy’s a guest on my channel, and I am very thankful he accepted my collab offer in the first place. He was very engaging with the game, and he tried to be as entertaining as he could to break the ice, which is something I appreciate even more. I had so much fun thanks to that, and was also able to provide fun video for you guys. Maybe the edited video might come across certain ways, but honestly he did nothing that led to hard feelings on my side. Props to Billy 쌤! :-)

She would've won if it was graded more strictly. I guess we'll need a round 2 :P
