How Many Guitars Should You Really Have?

Музыка

You've all seen those guitar players who have a room full of guitars hanging on the wall. Maybe you're one of them.
The truth is every guitarist is different. Some prefer a ton of guitars to choose from while others just want a few really good options.
But at the end of the day, it's all about having the right guitars that fit your needs, whether that's 30 or 3.
In this video, I'm simply sharing the guitars I own and the specific purpose each one has for me.
***Here's the link to all of the guitars and music gear I use that I mention in the video (there's a link to Shroedder Guitars there, as well): www.jasonstallworth.com/gear/
Oh, and you'll also hear what these guitars sound like, many of which in a live situation, on stage.
And hang around for exciting news at the end!

Jason

I only follow 10 guitar related channels on KZread. 9 of their hosts actually can play the guitar very well, you are one of them. 8 of them know a lot about guitars, you are one of them. 7 of them are completely honest about what they talk about, you are one of them. 6 of them don't show off with endless and pointless solos and shredding, you are one of them. 5 of them talk about really good gear regardless the price range or the brand, you are one of them. 4 of them are in my top favorites, you are one of them. 3 of them use simple and straight ways to explain things, you are one of them. two of them are among the coolest guys on KZread, you are one of them. I love your content and your playing! Your down to earth advice and perspective is very helpful. I am a gear head, I have over 40 guitars (basses included), 13 amps, 23 pedals, a switcher, 3 multieffects processors, 4 cabs, a small P.A., & a multitrack recorder.... That's after getting rid of a truck and trailer load of stage gear. I find that about 10 of my guitars get significantly more playing time than the rest. I said all that not to brag, but to make the point that while having a huge selection looks (and sounds) really impressive, but can also limit progress in that there are so many options that I find myself dialing in tones more and practicing techniques less. The benefits of minimalistic setups is that with limited options we are forced to master techniques to sound good instead of relying too heavily on the textures to make interesting music. Sometimes having less is more beneficial to developing a style. On the flip side of that, sometimes finding a new combination of gear inspires creativity based on the sounds that are accidentally stumbled upon. Lastly, the proper amount of guitars can be calculated by always adding one more to your current collection (N+1)! Cheers!

Thank you and appreciate the kind words. Yes, you're right...gear can sometimes become a roadblock, even with software (amp sims). It can give you that paralysis by over-analysis syndrome, always tweaking and not practicing or writing new material! And I like your point on mastering a minimal amount first before moving on to more gear. Solid advice!

I have four electric guitars at the moment. Two six strings, two seven strings. Ibanez RGT6EXFX, Sterling JP60, Jackson JS22-7 and LTD EC-407. Love all these guitars. Having a couple of guitars is great if you need different ones to be tuned for different tunings, though truth be told I often keep my other three on standby for long periods of time while my favorite of the four gets the most play time from me. Right now it's my EC-407

This might come as mind-blowing to you but the between positions on my ibanez rg350ex at least doesn't make a blend between bridge-middle and neck-middle. It actually splits the humbuckers to single coils! Found out just recently after 14 years of owning mine lol. So the 2nd position on the switch (starting from the bridge) actually splits the bridge humbucker into a single coil. And the same happens on the 4th position for the neck humbucker. You can test this if you actually lower the middle pickup all the way into the body. That way the volume of the middle pickup will be really low. So if the switch was making a blend between bridge-middle & neck-middle like tou said you would actually notice a huge reduction in volume in the between positions 2 & 4. This doesn't happen on my guitar and it is proof that the humbuckers actually split into single coils in those positions. Cheers

"As many as you can play at the same time, plus one." I just came up with that one LOL. WRT the actual question itself, it is really a very first world problem. Personally I think: One with a whammy bar One hard tail A short scaled one An acoustic May be active pickups on one of the electrics, or whatever other bling. That ought to be more than enough! But if someone REALLY likes guitars, why not have as many as they want?

I have a little more than a good superstrat and a 5-string bass. Sure, I could use a nicer bass (it's a cheapo 5-string Squire without a neck pup), and maybe a couple upgrades to my super-strat, but that's really all I *need* at the moment for my current "projects". I'm growing into a minimalist. My 2 classical guitars are almost a separate interest that is partially dormant given my current "projects". Then there are my other guitars that require repairs that are worth more than the guitars. HOWEVER... I do see value in having a large collection of amps and pedals. I sometimes wish I could afford one of those high tech modelers. IF I played live, I would wish for a backup superstrat as insurance against the rare encounter of a string break (I love the floyd rose, but the show is potentially over if a string breaks).

  • @jasonstallworth

    @jasonstallworth

    2 жыл бұрын

Ah, yeah, those Floyd Rose's and string breaks do NOT mix very well! That's why I'm leaning towards getting my friend's Tele for my live solo gigs. No floating trem and just a simple workhorse for the stage. For bass, man, check out the LTD D5 I have. It's a solid bass and sounds awesome! There a channel out there where the guy just slams the guitar calls it trash unplayable I believe he said but he is dead wrong . Very nice solo man. The number of guitars depends on the type of music and of course the tuning. If a person uses many different tunings, it is natural. But, if you are using the same tuning, there's no meaning except the single coil/humbucker pickup

I have two guitars. But I am not primarily a guitar player... >_> ...but I have 7 basses lol. Though to be fair, 3 are the ones I play all the time and out of those, two are my "band instruments" so one is a backup in case I break a string at a show. One is a fretless, and 2 are projects (and one might end up just being a cool museum piece from the USSR). I haven't decided if I am going to sell my 6-string Carvin, yet. The SRC6 is a special instrument tbh. So really I guess I have just 3 basses and a bunch of oddballs LOL... I've put Fishman Fluence modern soapbars in two basses and have Darkglass Tone Capsules in both of those instruments. Perfection *chef's kiss* I feel you on frets. On my two Schecter basses the frets are THICC, so are the ones on my ESP and Legator guitars. I love love love jumbo frets, once I learned how light I could fret on them I just got faster and faster; playing just got so much easier. I love that your guitars are mostly all approaching 20 years old. That's awesome. Less instrument GAS, more playing \m/(>.

I have about 50 guitars in my herd, of which a baker's dozen (13) are regularly used more often than the others. Each of these guitars have a different voice that makes it best for different genres and styles. 5 are great for different heavy metals, 4 are hard blues/rock/metal/country, one is great for cleans and mild dirt, 2 for surf and funk, and one classic 80s metal and rock. Most of the rest of my guitars for use in specific conditions like 4 have drop tunings, 1 is specially built to be travel/practice guitar, 4 have a specific oddball tunings. One of my bass is a 6-string which has been retuned to an alternative B-Standard so it can be played like a regular guitar but at 4 steps below E. My shorty 4-string pj-bass has been restrung and tuned to piccolo bass to give me a higher than normal bass line. One guitar has been designed to be a test guitar with a flexible modular pickguard that allows quick changing between different pup configs and different control configs. The rest are future project guitars that will be rebuilt and heavily modded later.

Ibanez is famous for using innovative 5-way switching solutions on their SuperStrats. They've tried many different combinations of Series/Parallel phasing of humbuckers, splitting to one or other coils of a humbucker, and any combination of the above with the middle pup. For example on my 2013 Ibanex S420-BK which has 2 humbuckers, the stock 5-way configuration is: Pos5: Neck Series. Pos4: Neck Parallel. Pos3: Both Series. Pos2: Neck Split South, Bridge Split North. Pos1: Bridge Series. On my 2012 Ibanez S570DXQM-TGB which is a HSH, the 5-way is setup from the factory as: Pos5: Neck Series. Pos4: Neck Split South + Middle Pos3: Middle. Pos2: Middle + Bridge Split North. Pos1: Bridge Series. I have 3 other Ibanez, 2 RGs and a 6-string SR406 bass. The two RGs also has unusual setups. The 1986 RG450-BK us a HSH, with a standard Strat like 5-way switching, but also includes a 2-way toggle that coil splits the two humbuckers. My 1989 RG565R-CA has a 3-way switch that switches the two pups like a standard Telecaster, the oddity here is the humbucker bridge with a single coil neck. The SR406-NT bass has 2 separate volumes, one for each pup and a master set of bass, mid and treble eq pots.

Great video. I appreciate the candor and genuine feel of it. While there's nothing wrong with having a script, sometimes content providers can be a little stiff or seem ingenuine because of them. I like a real person sharing real thoughts like a conversation. I gotta ask a question(s) because I don't own any Prestige models myself, but my other 3 Ibanez guitars all have different variations of the Edge Tremolo that are all angled in more of a wedge shape, and are/came set up to where the bottom of tremolo plate is flush with the body. (TBH I'm pretty sure every Edge Tremolo I've seen in person or on the interwebs are set up like mine.) I see yours has the top of the tremolo flush with the body instead of the base. Is the Edge Tremolo on yours not angled? I couldn't quite tell in the video. If so, have you ever tried setting it up with the bottom flush to body, and did/do you notice any differences at all? I'm not trying to say yours is set up incorrectly, it's just different than any other Edge Tremolo I've seen. I am however an expert of exactly jack with a minor in sh*t and did my dissertation on squat. I'm just one of those fools with some tools, or is it a tool that's a fool, I forget how it goes. ;) So maybe I just never noticed it set up that way on any others before?

Thanks for the kind words and good to know! Man, I don't really notice (or pay attention) to the way the tremolo is setup. I do recall someone telling me it looks weird! But it plays just fine. So it could be that specific model.

I am a little more than a beginner (~2 years into guitar) and i just ordered my 4th guitar. My first was a black 1984 Explorer because it looked dope. The 2nd guitar was a 7string Explorer with Evertune bridge because i wanted to get used to a seven string guitar as early as possible and try out Evertune. Then i bought a 6 string Strat shape with a tremolo to try this out and to have a different shape for once. I put that tremolo in a fixed position though because i can no really make use of it yet. :) And just now i ordered a Les Paul because i always wanted to have one + it has the newer Fishman pickups wich wanted to try out. I wonder wich shape and tone will turn out to be my favorite once i consider myself intermediate in a couple of years.

Thats only the beginning my friend. Soon you'll find yourself walking into Guitar Center to buy a set of strings and walk out with a 5th guitar. You'll be recording and notice the volume knob sits to close to the bridge pickup, so you'll buy a sixth guitar. Welcome to the abyss, there is no way out.

I`ve actually made the decision to reduce my guitar collection "What!!!." I can hear you all screaming at me, but yes, there`s a lot of truth in the term "Less is More." and I`d far sooner have less guitars that I play more often, than a load that I`m barely touching from one week to the next, for me these days, its about quality, not quantity. 6 to 8 very nice quality guitars is plenty, I simply don`t need 20+ average or budget models, and when I say quality, I don`t mean high end names, (eg, Gibson, Fender, Martin etc.) I just mean very nice playable instruments, with a mix of names on the headstocks, but each of them at sensible prices, I don`t care what they`re called, its how they play & sound. 😎🎸 x8.

My goal is to eventually have maybe a half-dozen, each one in a specific tuning fora specific purpose. 3 6-strings (E for classic metal, Eb for Weezer/Morbid Angel/etc and D for "modern" metal) two sevens (one standard, one half-step down for Morbid Angel) and a beater acoustic 6 for camp. Maybe a 6-string in C# for Sabbathy stuff, like the Overkill song "Skullkrusher" from Years of Decay or basically every Brutal Truth album. So far I have 2. :P

Metal Zone is a classic and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It got a bad rap by people that don't know what they are doing with it lol. Enjoy it! :D If your amp has an FX send/return, plug your guitar into it and then plug the MZ output into the FX Return. This bypasses your amp's preamp which will also color the sound beyond what the metal zone is doing. If you have to go into the front of your amp then I would zero out all the EQ and other controls before experimenting with them :)

Someone said in comments, on a video about the pedal, says if you plug in into front, but lose the Presence to zero, It would sound the same, not sure how accurate it is, but yeah I will try your way, to do it, both on FX loop, and small amps in front. Thanks :). Sounds great, the Waza has a bit more Low-end, sounds fantastic. Cheers!
