How Many Flaws Can I Find in Nikon Z6 III Before Turning Camera On?

Комедия

Today we are exploring the Nikon Z6 III with Nikkor 600mm f6.3 Z lens. How many flaws can I find before even turning the camera on? A fun unboxing, looking for deal breaking flaws in the system. I found several. Filmed with the Nikon Z6 III with Nikkor 40mm f2 at the end in 4k and 6k raw 12 bit.

Christopher Frost’s review is pretty fair. I don’t think he’s particularly for/against Nikon. 100% agree with the mode dial gripe. I prefer the Z5 with the non-locking dial on the right side. I can do everything with one hand holding the camera, and I have never accidentally flipped the mode dial without a lock. Very handy for switching between stills and video as I prefer manual mode for video, aperture priority for stills.

When I had a Z50 and Z7II, it was harder to go back to the Z7II after having all of the controls, including playback (like EVERY other camera on the planet, including most point and shoots) on the bottom right. The Z6III having it on the right instead of the left is annoying, but manageable. Just let us remap whatever button we want to. It is nicer when they match the picture, but they could design buttons or stickers to address that. ;)

I have changed systems and have handled enough through my life. So far this is how I rate ergonomics: 1. Olympus 2. Panasonic 3. Nikon 4. Fuji but they have so many different bodies it's hard to say without listing them. 5. Sony 6. Canon It's funny how smaller companies always have better controls. As if they compensate for the lack of IQ, sensor size, AF speed etc.

Your S5 has better lowlight performance than the Z6iii, because they have the new partial stacking, whatever that is, it makes it worse than the Z6ii in dr / lowlight. imo the S5 is the king of lowlight photography. I know they say the Z6iii autofocuses better in lowlight than the Z6ii, but the reason is that it has bigger focus pixels (I bet). This also happened with the Z6ii over the Z6. The Z6 has very conservative sized focus pixels. I mean the phase detect part of the focus pixels. Those are basically inferior pixel in your camera. No free lunch, the switch to mirrorless has its advantages, but disadvantages too.

They just run a basic formula to average things out in the end, but on any given sale they might actually be losing money. The Z30 has fixed, large lugs with an oblong opening, while the rest of the Z series is like your Z6III. I assume you can remove the jangly piece leaving a small lug with a circular hole which would be more suitable for a system like the Peak Design straps, so it shouldn't really be a complaint, except maybe they could have put the jangly pieces in a plastic bag so that you don't have to be burdened with the task of detaching them from the camera.

If you're using spot focus/dynamic area on the Z6ii, it's equivalent to the D5/D850. However, all the other modes, people/animal... man it's really hit or miss. I've had the Z6ii for like 2 years. I still prefer using my D850. When I use my Z6ii with the automated autofocus modes I feel like I have to take way more photos just to get the same amount of keepers. (Especially if you're more than 15 feet away from your subjects) I do get lots of photos. Stick with the D5 for now, if you really want the Z6 line just wait like 6 months when the price drops like $500 and get the iii. When I know I have to get the shot right the first time the Z6ii is staying home, the D850 or my D3s is coming with me. They both rarely miss.

I am a spot and joystick autofocusser - would be nice to have decent face tracking though, but if the spot C-AF matches D5 then I'll be ok - plus more AF points, IBIS and silent shutter bonuses. I've got to rule out the Z6iii because of the DR and ISO problems Photons to Photos found - I need that low light performance from my FF camera. Z8 would be ideal but it's files are big and it's a bit pricey .

    Nikon is killing it. Z9 > A1, R3. Z8 > A7R5, R5. Z6iii > A74, R6ii, A7S3. Canon’s turn next. We’ll see what they bring to the table.

Z8 only > A7RV in videospecs and high fps + readout & media (cfexpress type A isnt really cool tbh) In terms of pure picture quality, screen/viewfinder resolution, autofocus, dynamic range, battery life, stabe, lens selection, weight and menus the A7RV is better. Overall I think its a tie.

@@quintecent8903 yeah, that’s fair. I think it’s close but to me I’d take a z8. For these reasons…z8 has better autofocus for me (a7r5 falls apart with fast movement continuous tracking in my experience), I’ll take the EVF that doesn’t have blackout and doesn’t change resolution whenever af is activated. video will be a long list of advantages for Z8 we aren’t going there and I’ll allow it to be reduced to one bullet point… other Z8 advantages that are meaningful is top oled screen/ illuminated buttons (both useful at night), better color (imo), pre buffer, auto capture. The stacked sensor is the biggest differentiation. A75R is a slow, high resolution camera that excels in a a lot of areas but not everything (sports, wildlife, video). Z8 excels in quite literally everything. Half of the other stuff is debatable - picture quality (I’ll take Nikon colors, resolution advantage is obviously A7R5 as well as dynamic range by a tad ), stabe (put a long lens on and compare), weight (Sony cameras still give my hands craps, fingers rub because they are too small), menus, you like what you’re used to.

I made a reply but KZread deleted it for some reason. In short, I think you could include other Z8 advantages. And some of those stated A7R5 advantages are subjective and can be broken down more ie EVF - specs only tell half the story give me the one that has no blackout :) The main differentiator to me is sensor… which allows the Z8 to excel at everything. A7r5 sensor limits it in a few genres. That sensor limitation is reason I have found the A7R5 does NOT have better autofocus. The A7R5 falls behind by a noticeable amount with autofocus when things start moving fast. Both are great cameras. And I think it’s close

I actually LOVE how you point out the small gripes that can only be discovered by actually USING the camera. The card slot door issue... I totally understand and would feel your pain. That's the kind of stuff other reviewers NEVER point out! Well done. Well done indeed.

More like his own weird quirks I can do nothing but praise every dial lock ever since I have had a camera without one. Always the worst when you think you're in manual or a User mode and the dial shifted in your bag to something like program and you're trying to figure out what is up with your settings while you're used to a preset.

Yes. Nikon's best ergonomics body feel in hand was actually was with D7500. (yeah I know the drawbacks of the specs). Zf indicates poor quality / compromised dials, button, and much more. If I waited from FEB 2024 to trade in gear toward that ZF, I might have bought this Z6iii, and be satisfied anyway. In deep with F mount gear and lenses to adapt. Most of all for "N", It is well past time to make a smarter menu system.

I am looking forward to Sony having a better format than s-log 3. Honestly, I LOVE S-Log 3 for certain scenarios, like shooting in broad day light. I often shoots groups of people under the shade of trees with the background fully lit by the sun and it really saves the shots from looking like utter crap. That said, in hectic shoots I sometimes forget to turn off s-log for situations where it's really destructive. In any low-contrast scenario it ruins the auto-focus and in high ISO situations it introduces a LOT of noise. So, I vote for RAW or some other Sony format that can't be called RAW for legal reasons but is better than S-Log 3 for the next A7V and A7sIV.

@@cameraconspiraciesYou can map it to your I-menu. On the Z50 and Z6 it is one press, and 4K24p and 1080 120p are next to each other so it's just 1)Press I-Menu and 2) either use the back dial or d-pad to get to the each mode. I think the back dial is what you're used to right? As for more wild life settings, though they do cater to photographers more, check out Hudson Henry, and Steve Perry as they have some of the most extensive Nikon custom settings walk throughs with many real world hacks that help allot when shooting birds. If the mentioned I-menu method doesn't work let me know. I have a fellow wild life shooter friend who is much more Nikon Savy that I can ask.

  • @filmstudiojapan

@@cameraconspiracies my reply vanished.. but this is more simplified. You can either go to Controls or Movie and then Customize I-menu. Map "QUAL" to one of the boxes. Then you simply press the i-menu button (it remembers last position) and scroll with the rear dial or d-pad to get to the frame rate/quality you want. Since I am working with a Z50 it's just 4K24 and HD120 right next to eachother, so I imagine you have to scroll a few more, but it's pretty fast using the rear dial. I almost seem to remember a way to limit available video modes, but don't quote me on that. I highly recommend Hudson Henry and Steve Perry for wild life customization hacks. They are both very experienced, and though their focus is photography, allot of it will apply to what you're doing. BTW, I appreciated your reaction when you finally got the lens out of it's box. Nikon lenses are a bit special.

I know that some people like it, but I find the small LCD screen useless. I had it on the Sony A99 and A99ii and used it maybe two times. That information is already available elsewhere anyhow and I look through the EVF most of the time anyhow. It seems to me like something left from a bygone era of film shooting. Can't see it if your camera is high on a tripod, can't see it if you're handholding a camera. Seriously! The main downside of having that screen is that it forces the manufacturers to place some of the dials and/or buttons on the left side, which I agree is just the worst. The left side should have no buttons or perhaps a custom button or two for functions that are important but aren't used frequently. Even so, I'd rather just use a quick menu.
