Totally agree. They are screwing the American people in order to help the big three automakers. This will for sure increase inflation as more higher priced EVs made in America will be available besides Tesla who will be able to produce lower priced EVs at a profit. It will also slow down the US’s transition to EVs which sucks. Competition would push US automakers to make better products. All this is going to do is make sure that they survive and produce far lower quality EVs very slowly. China will walk away with the vast majority of the global market.

Enjoyed your second video! That sleek black one at the beginning you didn't recognize as well as the nearly as sleek green and white car you saw later are all Changan products. Changan has developed different brands just for their EVs. Lowest tier is the Lumin, which are all those little Lumin Corns you saw. The middle mainstream tier is called Deepal, which is the green/white ones you saw, the Deepal SL03. Now there is a crossover version too, the Deepal S7. The SL03 is not only got a good price, but it is also very practical because it is a true liftback, unlike all these sedans such as Model 3, Aion S, Xpeng P7 etc, which are not as practical. And finally the sleek black one is from Changan's premium brand, Avatr. You may have noticed that one of Changan's strength is styling, and that the Lumin, the Deepal, and especially the Avatr, are all very good looking. But the Avatr brand goes beyond that and is sort of like the best of all worlds, because it is a 3 way joint venture between Changan, CATL, and Huawei. So Changan provides the styling and car building expertise, CATL, the leading battery maker on the planet, provides the battery of course, and Huawei provides their world class infotainment stack and autonomous driving tech. The Avatrs are not cheap, but they are very nice cars. Changan also illustrates the inversion of the relationship between Chinese domestic carmakers and foreign carmakers. Once upon a time, every major international car maker came to China to exploit its untapped market, and in return the Chinese government made them form joint ventures with various domestic carmakers, so that over time the domestic carmakers can learn how to build competitive cars. So everyone got paired off, GM with SAIC, Toyota with GAC, VW with SAIC and FAW, etc. Changan was paired with Ford and later Mazda, and for many years Ford and Mazda designed the cars they wanted to sell in China, and it was Changan's job to manufacture those foreign designed cars. Now in the 2020s, Changan's own branded cars are very nice looking, as you might have noticed, and Changan has pivoted to EVs far faster than its JV partners. Avatr and Deepal are far more competitive than Ford's EV offerings in China, and Mazda is so behind that its new EV, the just revealed EZ-6, is just a Deepal SL03 (the ones you saw on the street) with some minor styling tweaks and a Mazda badge on the front. In 20 years Changan went from assembling Mazdas designed in Japan to now Mazda having to come in and badge engineer a Changan product to sell under their own brand because Mazda's own EV tech is woefully behind. Mazda might be forced out of the Chinese market altogether soon, but Changan has set itself up to succeed for the future electrified car market.

@@xiaoandmatt I live in the US, but because I know Chinese, I started checking out all the Chinese language content on Chinese market cars over the past few years, and I had no idea Chinese carmakers have made so much progress recently, especially on EVs. Kind of makes sense why the US is throwing up that giant 100% tariff against Chinese vehicles. "Overcapacity" is their reason, but the Chinese carmakers have been capable of overcapacity for like 15 years, so why is the US only now panicking? All the overcapacity in the world is meaningless if Chinese cars are not competitive against western carmakers. But now that they ARE competitive, the overcapacity gives them economies of scale which the west cannot match. Will be interesting to see the developments in the Chinese market in the coming years. Probably they will start consolidation around maybe 10 major carmakers such as BYD, Geely, SAIC, Changan, GAC etc, who will then each have even more resources at their disposal. If the US is worried about China Auto Inc now, they are going to be in even deeper trouble with post-consolidation China Auto.

One of China's oldest and most prolific bus makers, it was outcompeted by rivals like Yutong and Golden Dragon and went into steady decline in the 2000s. These days they're still built locally, but are really owned by Weichai Power, a leading manufacturer of engines and machineries, which is controlled by the northern province of Shandong. Note that even as a skeleton of its former self, Asiastar was able to develop a few BEV buses to be ran by Yangzhou municipal services. Quite a feat if you think about it.

6:45 BAIC Arcfox Alpha-T, Fisker Ocean's Chinese brother, as it's Magna Blue Sky, the joint venture between BAIC and Magna, that Fisker signed a technology sharing agreement with. Unlike Fisker, BAIC had no trouble mass producing them (in Zhenjiang, the city right next to Yangzhou cross the Yangtze), just that they don't appear as compelling among the Chinese competitors as the Ocean does in the US. The only way out for Fisker, if there ever was one, was to make the Ocean in China (more like rebadging the Arcfox). Yet even that isn't feasible in the current climate.

By the end of 2023, the number of new energy vehicles in China has reached 20 million, with 7.5 million new registrations throughout the year; the number of motor vehicles nationwide has reached 435 million, including 336 million cars; EVs have huge market inside China, because electricity cost is only 10% of oil , and 336 million oil cars are to be replaced by EVs within next 20 years. Meanwhile, more solar farms or nuclear power stations or gas powerstations are needed to meet the demand of electricity consumption.

Green license plate could be used for EV only and costs little, while the blue plate could be used for both but costs a lot if money. In case you have paid a lot money to acquire a blue plate years ago (in big cities) for your gas car, when you bought a new EV and sold the old one, you can keep the blue plate as an asset to put on your new EV.

But I realized that it's not going to happen because most countries simply do not have the infrastructure to support ICE to EV conversion. EV owners will not have range anxiety if there are enough charging stations. Only few countries have built enough charging station, while this is not happening in many other countries.

In major Chinese cities, it is hard to find a gas car now. That is because it is very difficult to get a gas car license in major cities since around 2015. It has been almost 10 years, and most gas cars running in the city streets are phasing out. Same is gradually happening in second tiered and third tiered cities. It is more and more difficult to get gas car licenses. The results are dramatic. It is more often to see blue sky in Chinese cities. And the streets are very quiet without gas cars. It is interesting to see that less and less people are honking. It seems as the streets are getting quieter and people are getting more polite, they are less likely to use honking.

Matt, EVs aren’t cheap. Apparently, there are many rich Chinese now. I am not sure about China hire purchase plans for EVs. Maybe, you can HP finance your EV for 10 long years in China ?? 😅

Many Chinese EVs are not expensive at all. There are many affordable options, so most Chinese people don’t think of EVs as more expensive as normal gas cars unless you are talking about luxury models like the NIO SUVs or the ET7.

In fact, in China, electric cars are about the same price as gasoline cars, or even cheaper.

In China, due to fierce competition, both EV and ICE are very cheap. Compared with vehicle of the same brand and model in China and other countries, China is always lower.

The first time I watched your video, the Tesla Model S in it had a blue license plate because it entered China a long time ago as an imported car. At that time, China had not yet started to promote new energy green license plates. Are you visiting Yangzhou now? It is a great garden city and I like it very much.
