honestly is this even true anymore? for almost 2 decades now he's only played for contender teams. He's consistently had top 10 guys in his teams with teams designed for playoff runs.

Definitely should have had 2021 on there... They were the #1 seed and loss to the #5 Hawks... That's probably the biggest choke of his career... Because unlike the other ones he didn't lose to some great team...

Yeah I was thinking of adding that one as well, but it technically didn’t meet the criteria of a ‘blown series’ since they actually went down 3-2. Also a big reason for that loss was Ben Simmons forgetting how to play basketball.

@@testing_something doc left ben in the final minutes of game 7 despite him being a liability in the 4th all series its a tough choice to make to bench your allstar player but it was clearly the choice he had to make to win that game mix that with the fact that they failed to contain trae young despite having a top defese and the defensive player of the year runner up and doc deserves a good chunk of the blame

If the choke jobs occurred early in his coaching career, you can call it inexperience. But these glaring mistakes happen after more than 10 years of coaching. That tells me either the man has never been a good coach or he has regressed. The first scenario is far more likely.

def fell off and only looked good for having superstars. Not saying all of its his fault since some of them had zero depth but if he did it that many times it goes to show he's responsible for a decent amount of it

Something that’s not covered in this video is the changes Doc is *not* making in any of these series compared to other coaches - and when there is a rare change to his game plan you can bet it will be followed to a tee for the *rest of the game* regardless of how poorly it’s working out. Injuries happen every year to year team, Doc does not have that much bad luck, and if he actually coached like a top 15 coach of all time then at least some of these losses would’ve been victories.

The second blown series in the video, the one against the Celtics, was MOST DEFINITELY Doc's fault because he had the greatest player of all time, Brian Scalabrine, out there playing meaningful minutes in the last 2 games, as he should have for the first 5, and STILL managed to coach the Celtics to a choke job!

The 2015 collapse will forever remain the worst choke job in my eyes. That lob city team was at its best ever and got smacked around by Cory Brewer and Josh Smith. 2020 was bad but the team was newly together and I can see why they struggled with no crowd.

7:58 you can say that harden and Embiid fell apart in game 7, but you have to ask the question of *why* they fell apart. The lack of adjustment in offensive schemes to make the most of 2 of the best offensive players in the modern NBA is astounding. You can’t just expect them to figure everything out on the fly. That might work in the regular season but it doesn’t work in the playoffs against a good team

Docs Beginning Legacy up until like 2010- Good Coach 2010-2023 - Good season coach in the regular season and choke every playoffs blows 3-1 leads like it’s nothing and a Kawhi rolling bounce shot that made Embiid cry

The 76ers one is tough. Ultimately, it probably was on him. But I do think Harden and Embiid share some of the blame. Harden underperformed and Embiid was always looking for someone to blame. First Embiid complains about not touching the ball in the last four minutes. Then, he gets the ball a ton at the end of the next game and complains that it’s all on him.

yeah that and the 2010 Finals are the two it took me the longest to decide on. It was just such a classic Doc series. He somehow led them to a win in game 1 without Embiid, did the hard work of going up 3-2, had Tatum really struggling through the first 3 quarters of game 6, and then it all fell apart from there. When they had the lead in the 4Q of game 6 i really thought they were gonna win, i should've known better lol.

Some of the blame can go to Harden and Embiid but Doc set them up for failure. If two great players are getting shut down a good coach will come up with a scheme to counter the other team’s defense and allow the offensive weapons to thrive. Doc basically just sent them out there and told them to figure it out

Tatum was hounding and searching to catch Embiid on the pick and rolls and it's up to Doc to have a gameplan to make sure Embiid isn't switching onto him like 5-6 times in a row. Genuinely was like he saw that and decided "yeah this is fine" as tatum kept abusing his quick first step and mobility in the mismatch

⁠@@notsocooldude7720Adjustments are crucial for coaches but while I was watching the game Embiid gave up after the 2nd quarter in game 7 on the defensive end and would randomly go for blocks that didn’t matter once the game was out of their hands.

One choke job that probably doesn't get talked about as much was in 2016 against Portland. when the Clippers led 2-0 after annihilating the Blazers by a combined 41 points. Even though the Blazers had Damian Lilliard, they still could've put the series away. But they let Portland back by losing four straight games. Not a 3-2 choke, but kind of a choke in a sense.

Great Video! I appreciate you gave Doc his flowers at the end and showed a key strength that does make Doc a great coach. What seems consistent in all of Doc's collapses is the lack of killer instinct. The 2008 Celtics had that, but clearly it wasn't doc who brought it to that team, and he hasn't since.

thank you! and that 08 team barely had it lol. They put it together by the end of that playoff run, but they didn't get a road win until the conference finals. They went 7 games with the hawks and cavs who really had no business competing with them during those first two rounds. But overall I do think he's a better coach than people give him credit for nowadays.

The teams down 3-1 made adjustments to get back in the series....Doc never makes adjustments.

As a celtics fan his running his starters into the ground and absolutely refusing to use his bench was awful for us big part of why we didnt get banner 18 with him.

Short answer for chokejobs on 3-1 leads only - all of them except the one with the Magic. The other ones he's blown most especially in the 2010s onward are basically with his teams having the main advantage the whole series, hell at one point leading in the clinching game BUT somehow, someway, the game goes awry. That's all coaching.

I'd argue there are others series that showed major flaws of his coaching in the clutch. 08 R1: Forced to 7 by the 8-seed, below .500 Hawks 17 R1: Giving the Jazz their first series win in 7 years 21 ECF: Crumbling to the Hawks, who also hadn't made the playoffs in 4 years

Clips weren’t healthy in 2017. They lost to the Jazz when Gobert missed most of Game 1, and Hayward missed Game 4 due to flu. Even without Blake Griffin, you can’t lose to the Jazz in that scenario. Not to mention that year, they had an under talked about choke against the Kings.

See, the Philly one seems like the wrong kind of firing at the wrong time. The real time to let him go was after the Atlanta series where Philly was favored and blew 2 games they should have easily won before being forced down 3-2. Not after a series where they're obviously the underdog against their grim reaper, gave open looks to Philly's shooters for most of the series, and even though they had no business winning road games in Boston with how deep Boston's roster was, they not only won 1 road game, they won 2. Games 1 & 4 were Harden actually showing up and Game 5 was a well-orchestrated performance while Boston had an off-night playing with their food. Even in Game 6, the plays to get good looks were working for a change. They just didn't hit them. Yes, Joel Embiid not touching the ball in the final minutes is head scratching, but this is where his supporting cast is supposed to hit their shots to open opportunities for Embiid to close out the game. They did not. So when I hear shit like, "Oh, Tobias Harris was the only one who did a damn thing in Game 7!", I respond with "where the fuck was he in Game 6? Oh yeah, 1 for 7 with a pathetic 9 points, that's where. Reminding you that we chose this guy over HIMMY BUTLER." James Harden expectly disappeared for 5 of the 7 games, and De'Anthony Melton, a supposed to be solid replacement spot for an aging Danny Green, went SCORELESS in game 6. At least Maxey tried that game. I guess. Unsurprisingly, Philly took their inevitable death march in game 7, but what was surprising was a 28-3 run reminding Philadelphia of Atlanta Falcons. What do we have to do with that now? We at least beat New England... But what I'm trying to say is that Doc getting Philly to a surprising series lead when we were a lot worse than Boston that people like to think and not having any terrible moments outside of maybe not giving Joel more touches in the Game 6 4th quarter doesn't mean it's his fault they lost. You should have talked about the Atlanta series because that was the one that was really Doc's fault to a Sixers fan like me.

I wanted to talk about the Hawks series but it technically didn’t meet the criteria because they were actually down 3-2 in that series. And the reason I don’t think they fired him right there was due to the fact that Ben Simmons disappeared, as well as the fact that it was the first year of him coaching there so they didn’t want to fire him right away. But that was the point I wrote him off as a serious coach. Following up his 2020 debacle with that in Philly made me truly realize he was likely the variable of all these collapses.

yea, My Clippers were the clear winners, I honest to god know they'd won a ring was it not for Rivers, simply put, Paul George, multiple time all star, Kawhi Leonard, 2 time FMVP, Joahkin Noah, DPOY, and more, the fact they got to 3-1 with that shit a coach is insane

Embiid was involved in almost every half court action down the stretch of game 6. Far from being iced out, he was intricately involved in the offense. The keystone. Even if you want to say to post him up, he was just getting doubled anyway. And Philly wasn’t getting very good offense out of Embiid post touches unless he drew a foul. Embiid’s best chance at scoring - the team’s- *was* the PnR. Unfortunately, seeing how it was late in the series, Harden had already turned into a pumpkin, as is his custom. If Boston had a competent coach though they sweep Philly even with the two Harden games.

I... think you're way too kind to Doc in this video honestly. A lot of his blown series doesn't even come down to talent it came down to down right poor execution when time to make adjustments. Orlando vs Detroit. Detroit started Prince on T-Mac in Game 4 and on... Prince Length bothered T-Mac and they never adjusted by finding T-Mac easy looks to get going. Just had to Iso it out. The Boston Vs Orlando series... the problem with that series is... unlike the Chicago series before it. Until Hedo was handed the ball. Orlando didn't have a downhill player so they didn't miss KG on that end because Orlando was just playing a shit ton of Pick and Roll where it was dump to Dwight or Kick out. Once Orlando gave Hedo the rock. Doc never adjusted in games 5, 6, 7 and Hedo and Lewis got PAID that offseason. Boston vs LA Lakers was rightly called a choke. Their game plan was to muddy up the series and make it a dogfight since it worked for them in 2008. The Lakers front court had the same players but they had grown. The advantage the Celtics had was actually that they had better assortment of perimeter players. And Doc didn't lean into that after Perk went down. Boston Vs Miami. Not his fault. Lebron reached another level in Game 6. Nobody was gone coach against that. Game 7 was incredibly winnable. But after the way Lebron torched them in Game 6, Boston having a lead in Game 7 felt like overachieving. Clippers Vs Rockets. That Clippers team was supposed to win a championship. It was a 56 win team under Vinny Del Negro, and he was a awful coach. Doc revisionist history is hilarious to me. He won a high of 57 games in LA. Okay but yeah, they refused to changed their game plan on defending the 3 (you can say that about ALL OF THESE SERIES BTW). They were sagging off pick and rolls in Game 6... when Harden was on the bench. Still hilarious to me. Please watch that game if you have time. Clippers Vs Denver. You called it right lol. Doc never called a trap on Murray instead depending on a average defender (PG) and one with arthritic knees... Lunacy. Murray literally was dropping 40 in the bubble in the last series lol. But the reason for the video Philly Vs Boston. I want to loop Atlanta in but... I won't cuz that's a different type of disaster. But... in the 4th Quarter after Tatum got hot and Boston kept force feeding him because nobody else could score. Why are you repeated switching on Pick and Rolls?!?! Why? And then not drawing up one play for the league MVP in the final half of quarter of a game 7... is wild. I got 1 acceptable blown lead. The other 6... a better coach sees this through. But I've been saying Doc is closer to Vinny Del Negro than Spolstra. People just didn't want to see it until he had 4 straight seasons end prematurely in a row. lol

So, my understanding from listening to player interviews is that the problem with Doc is that, while he is good at managing egos, he doesn't actually do any coaching. Assuming they're telling the truth, Doc is technically responsible for every one of these losses

I dont think 2023 was on Doc at all. Joel Embiid and James Harden played atrociously in games 6 and especially 7 and Doc rivers kept trying to put them in situations where they can do something but Embiid especially wasnt even aggressive enough to even go to the FT line. He even said Harden was a difficult player for him to coach and Harden (and Embiid) completely threw him under the bus in the postgame interviews. (BTW hes doing the same thing rn to Russ, PG and the clippers🤷‍♂)

I just think it is very very convenient that time after time Doc Rivers has seen his best players fold in the biggest moments. At some point when it’s happening so often with a variety of different star players on different teams, there has to be blame placed at the feet of the one constant.

No he needs a team of veterans. With a floor general that is seasoned enough to change plays on the spot when needed. He’s terrible at developing young talent. The one chip he won had rondo a true PG floor general. And rondo has had problems with every coach he’s had. Except doc rivers. That should tell you something

The sixers this year kinda confused me cause they don't really run off ball sets or anything to get shooters open. It's really just harden+embiid making reads out of the pick and roll. Doc definitely coulda featured maxey and harris more in the offense.

Doc is the basketball equivalent of Mike McCarthy. Wins a lot of games, gets his team to the playoffs but always finds a way to choke in the playoffs except for one magical year. 2021 Sixers also a horrible choke job even tho he didn’t have a 3-1 or 3-2 lead. Blew a 18 point lead in game 4 and then blew a 28 point lead in game 5 to go down 3-2. Then at home game 7 he continued his insane phobia of playing young guys and hardly played tyrese Maxey who carried the Sixers in game 6 and played a washed George hill who was an averaged 2.4 ppg in the series and was a Minus -15 in game 7. Ben Simmons rightfully was torched by the media but I felt like doc was let off the hook too easy for that one when he contributed.

And similar to the Celtics series in 23 with Tatum struggling and somehow they still lost, Trae young was abysmal in that series I think he was like 30% from 3. He continued to die on the vine with Ben and refused to play Maxey in big moments and die with vets who couldn’t play anymore

Great analysis and pleasant video! I feel that most of the hate towards Doc Rivers is overblown, but I do think he’s definitely responsible for the four collapses that you stated.

He's a great PLAYER coach and not any player, the players he's good with are Tyrese Maxey's aka players who apperacite and listen to the advice but he's not good at adjusting to any pressure, not good to adjustinf lineups, not good at making offenses, not good at many things but he's not or at least didn't use to be as bad. I think some part of him gives up coaching when he gets talent, he expects them to just be KG, Paul and Rondo without adapting to who they really are

Do you want a coach that can get the most of a semi-talented group but you know if you get a better team he’ll lose, or do you just stay away from him? For me, I’m staying away. No, the fact that the teams get leads that's when you need the coach to make adjustments...all his former players say that he doesn't make adjustments! You need to be able to adjust to what the other team does not just try to install a game plan and hope your team can close it out!

I don't particularly like doc Rivers, but the clippers I don't necessarily hate CP3, but he does choke in the playoffs and the other clipper team had one of the biggest chokes of all time I personally think the Denver nuggets would have won if it had been for Rondo

I think it's important to note that during the Covid seasons, a lot of teams didn't practice, including the Nuggets squad the Clippers choked against. Not saying that it couldn't have had an effect, but just noting that it wasn't just Doc's call to have the team not practice. Multiple teams were doing the same thing.

Well it was well known before the bubble that Kawhi and Paul George never really practiced with the team before COVID happened and there were chemistry problems beforehand. You could argue it was more an institutional choke from that perspective, than solely Doc, but since his strength is suppose to be in building team chemistry probably deserves a good chunk of blame.

All of them. The only skillset he has that is worthwhile is his networking. This the reason why he keeps getting coaching job offers. He should just be a sports agent as he doesn't have the skills for adjustments during games.

He is an above-average coach, that's for sure. But to win the championship requires more than that.

Also against Atlanta it was his fault they choked that series away. He literally could have won some of those games if he went with a ‘Free Throw’ 2K lineup in the final quarters.

Hes a good regular season coach, because in game adjustments are few and far in between. But in playoff series he's AWFUL because adjustments have to be made ALL THE TIME, not just in game..but game to game. He barely even practices during the playoffs (which is CRAZY)...They were ALL his fault.

I’d say 3-1 in 2003 against the Pistons and 3-2 in 2012 against the Heat were not his or anyone on the teams fault because both of those teams were not meant to be in those positions in the first place. If anything those series are a positive credit to Doc because his teams overachieved in those series.

Also 2009 against the Magic. Garnett was injured so the Celtics had no business winning even 3 games against the Magic without Garnett. I know that Jameer was injured for the Magic as well, but Garnett is obviously a more significant loss.

The reason the magic lost that 3-1 lead was because that was the first year the first round was not a 5 game series!!

I wonder if looking at his career as a whole puts perspective on why he stilll lost in series he cant be fully blamed for. Losing those series may not have been his fault but he certainly didnt help.

Having Brian Scalabrine out there on the Celtics in 09 is Doc fault. Should had Big Baby Glen Davis who was more aggressive and rougher in that post. Big Baby and Kendrick Perkins could've clogged the lane.

Here are some additional weird facts regarding Doc Rivers: 1. Doc Rivers teams has never been swept in a playoff series. Even when he went down 3-0 to Knicks in 2013 for the automatic series loss, Doc was still able to carry the Celtics to a Game 6. 2. Doc's only conference finals berths were with Celtics. Even in the 2012 Lockout Playoffs where assistant Tom Thibodeau was coaching Bulls, Doc still got out of the 2nd round. Magic, Clippers, 76ers - none got past 2nd round. Doc's greatest weakness as a coach is passion. He aligns more with the underdogs, teams who are guaranteed to lose and uses such slights as motivation to prove critics wrong, sometimes to the detriment of his own abilities. If it's a roster devoid of an All-Star and full of role players, rookies and one-dimensional specialists like the 2019 Revenge Of The Role Player Clippers, he'll be better engaged because he associates more with them. But when it's a title contending team with two or three superstars, he often times forgets that to the point of purposeful disregard. It's hard for me to put into words, but it's as if Doc sabotages his title contending teams in a secondhand way until the team is a situation where they've automatically lost. Wait until they're down 3-0 where no team has ever recovered in a playoff series to light Doc's fire. You can only go so far with heart and hustle, but without some kind of strategy your team becomes predictable and easily beatable. Personally I think Doc's legacy is forever tarnished. Three blown 3-1 leads, including a tenure with Clippers that resulted in two with one team in a 5-year span (for context, Suns pair of collapses happened in 1970 and 1995, a 25-year gap, and 76ers happened in 1968 and 1981, a 13-year gap). But I don't think Doc's coaching career is over. He may go at it as a sort of last hurrah, however, he will need a Team USA of assistant coaches who can handle offense, defense and specialties - limiting Doc to just motivational speeches and plays out of time outs.

I don’t view blowing leads as a bad thing, I view it as you got into a spot in which you succeed, then you just couldn’t make an adjustment.

I think it’s unfair to ignore the fact that pg and kawhi shot atrociously in games 5 6 and 7 from what I remember. That’s not his fault in my opinion if his 2 best players can’t hit a brick especially for 2 or 3 consecutive games

He's terrible at countering other coaches adjustments, whether it be midgame, or mid series. He comes up with a good initial plan for a series, but once the other team adjusts, it's like he's just lost in the wilderness. Also, his guys never stand up for him and say "no, it wasn't his fault, he's our guy", to save his job. That's a bad sign.

Anytime a team blows a 3-1 lead, it is the HCs fault. It means the other team has figured you out and the coach has failed to adjust.
