How Many Disinfecting Wipes Can Your Smartphone's Screen Take? | WSJ

Ғылым және технология

Cleaning your phone can be a solid coronavirus-prevention practice but how much is too much? What products are OK to use? WSJ’s Joanna Stern got answers by scrubbing a brand new iPhone 8 with everything from disinfecting wipes to acidic toilet-bowl cleaner.

Most people use Lysol wipes incorrectly. It states on the container that in order to be virucidal, the surface of whatever you're wiping needs to remain wet for ten minutes. To be bacteriacidal, it only requires 30 seconds.

So if I use a gentle hand soap 1 part soap to 20 parts water in a spray bottle and spray a touch on a microfiber cloth it will be safe? I find lysol too strong and even alcohol this is why I want to try the hand soap (a gentle one) method.

  • @mattymattttttttt

it seems like most of the chemicals Apple recommended against using to clean screens are actually fine - I have reason to believe because of this test, that the friction of sliding the phone in and out your pocket as well as rubbing your screen with your fingers in daily use are the main contributors to coating wear. (this is also based on my years of smartphone ownership trying desperately to keep the coating intact and only buying screen protectors with coatings)

Is it really the lack of coating that's causing the oil drops to behave like that? It might be the uneven surface of the glass after all the abrasives. Maybe the coating was all gone but you just didn't have correct methodology to test it properly.
