How Many Disinfecting Wipes Can Your Smartphone's Screen Take? | WSJ
Ғылым және технология
Cleaning your phone can be a solid coronavirus-prevention practice but how much is too much? What products are OK to use? WSJ’s Joanna Stern got answers by scrubbing a brand new iPhone 8 with everything from disinfecting wipes to acidic toilet-bowl cleaner.

Starts at 3:58 Ends at 4:12 Side note: Phone screens have Oleophobic coating to repel oil and water
I've been using Lysol wipes for years on my phone and it never seems to do any damage. It does leave a residue which I wipe off with a moist tissue. Phone still looks great!
But there are 366 days this year.

How can i restore the oleophobic coating on my phone?
Most people use Lysol wipes incorrectly. It states on the container that in order to be virucidal, the surface of whatever you're wiping needs to remain wet for ten minutes. To be bacteriacidal, it only requires 30 seconds.
tbh everyone has a protective glass cover over the whatever coating on the screen SO WE CAN STILL USE LIQUID ALCOHOL CLEANER ON OUR PHONES

Thanks WSJ, you test it for us, now I have the knowledge!
Alchol based desinfect will remove the protective coating on the google pixel 1st gen, I just tried :(, but got rid of two scratches :)
The WSJ needs another article on "How to open emails with coronavirus".
Me when I read the title: Wait, what?
Omg i think u deserve 3 years vacation for this effort good job!
What about the microscopic damage caused by scrubbing? That alone can drag the oil from slipping from the phone's surface.
I really appreciate you making this video.
You're very entertaining. I love your videos. Please do more Joanna.
now could you please test it on market tempered glass screen protector ?
Well done! Another perfect iPhone commercial!
So if I use a gentle hand soap 1 part soap to 20 parts water in a spray bottle and spray a touch on a microfiber cloth it will be safe? I find lysol too strong and even alcohol this is why I want to try the hand soap (a gentle one) method.
it seems like most of the chemicals Apple recommended against using to clean screens are actually fine - I have reason to believe because of this test, that the friction of sliding the phone in and out your pocket as well as rubbing your screen with your fingers in daily use are the main contributors to coating wear. (this is also based on my years of smartphone ownership trying desperately to keep the coating intact and only buying screen protectors with coatings)
thank you
Now is there a way to bring back the olephobic coating because I used like 5-6 wipes of Zeiss and my phone is 1 year old is it okay that at this time the coating comes off
cant believe it is a commercial
How do you take off sweat safely off you iPhone 7 cause I have sweat that doesn’t come of with water
Me during the whole video: “Just use a screen protector like a normal person”
Just use Tempered Glass and your original screen oliophobic coating would be safe.

I used isopropyl alcohol soo often to clean my iPad screen
Thank you for this!! God you didnt know how torn I am to either sanitize my phone or preserve my screen's oleophobic coating because I NEVER use screen protectors.. Now I know that sanitizing it wont have that much effect on the coating..

I use the UV phone sanitizer it works well
this is amazing actually :D
The phone has to be an iPhone, isn't it?
I don’t care about bacteria on my phone I just want to clean the finger prints it’s so annoying to put a dirty phone in a case sometimes I see people open a brand new phone touch it everywhere then put it in a case without cleaning it how can people do this

i came here after watching your clip in Mark Rober
I always use Clorox wipes. Has not hurt my screen protector.
Wait you can be infected via messages and calls ??
Ive been cleaning my phone for years. Rag or unused cloth with sanitizer. Perfectly fine.
most people didnt watch the whole video before commenting, the answer is at the end
From my experience it's takes about 5-6 month to destroy the coating if wipe phone with 70% of alcohol sprayed on cotton disc.
covers and screen guards keep the phone safe only
Effort
get a screen protector so you can still sanitize ur phone fully without damaging the SCREEN screen itself.
Use vinegar and water than
I have a phone soap! Everyone should have one!
It’s more important to wear a surgical mask or N95 mask than clean your phone every other hours.

i also scrub a lot for science
Ever wonder why the videos on this series have way more dislikes than others?
I was disinfecting my phone for last 2 years and its battery got affected. don't even think about it...
I don't have this problem, becouse I use a screen protector =D
Wasting an n95 mask for this seems frivolous

And here I just use a wet tissue...... for both the phone and the phone case.

Off topic?
What has wsj come to, this feels like some mr beats KZread channel now
Is it really the lack of coating that's causing the oil drops to behave like that? It might be the uneven surface of the glass after all the abrasives. Maybe the coating was all gone but you just didn't have correct methodology to test it properly.
Just spray Lysol and a wipe and your good no need to do all of this
This is useful, thank-you:)
So I need a full box of Clorox wipes, toilet bowl cleaner and a car buffer for my phone, and a UV light case optionally to clean it, seems reasonable
During this pandemic I’ve been cleaning my phones a lot with disinfected wipes. Then somehow my phone got frozen.
